August looks like it's going to be a great month for aficionados of great guitar music:
I've just learned this morning that the great Wayne Krantz has a new CD coming out on August 16...

This, in addition to Robben Ford's Soul on Ten live release scheduled for August 11, has got me twitching with anticipation...

I'm looking forward to this.
I have heard quite a few cuts from his studio album Signals, and also own some of his more recent live stuff. While the live stuff is great, it is pretty free form and improvisational, while what I have heard of Signals is much more brainy, dense, compositional based fusion, which I think I prefer from Krantz. He is a deeeeeeeeeeep player for sure.

I agree, I prefer his CDs where there's some composition to hang his hat off of. If anyone can pull off a fully-improvised thing it's Wayne, but as you point out, it's missing that little extra bit of structure which I find makes things all the more interesting. If you like Signals you should really check out Long To Be Loose and Two Drink Minimum. The latter is the best of both worlds -Wayne playing live over some of his own tunes, which are great.
I've really been looking forward to this project ever since he started hinting at it on his website last year.

very cool... I heard Wayne play on Fagen's solo tour a couple years ago... he was just amazing; great tone and chops, but his melodic sense absolutely FLOORED me!!!! I still rememeber, vivdly, his SLASHING outro on "the NightFly"! Never before had I heard that tune as grinding blues/jazz/funk/ rocker - and now I can't forget it!

I had the pleasure of seeing Wayne with the same trio (Carlock and Lefebvre... I think) in 1999 or so at Yoshi's in Oakland... another of his rare west coast performances... what a killer show...

I'm lucky to live in the NY metro area and have caught WK live at the 55 Bar many times. It's an experience like no other. The crowds are unique , too. You can hear a pin drop in between tunes.....everyone's there for one reason only - to hear Wayne play.

About a year ago or so I went on a kick of trying to find everything I could that he ever played on. Found a few real gems, like Jay Anderson's Next Exit and Jasper Van't Hof's Blue Corner and some other interesting stuff.
Really looking forward to the CD. I'll be in NY in a week, wish he was playing at the 55 Bar still...
