It occurred to me.......


Have you ever heard really good players just mess around while talking or explaining something. I point out some examples:

Buddy Whittington at a NAMM show demo with a little Dr.Z amp
Eric Johnson on an instructional video talking about chords playing while deciding what to play
Scott Henderson talking about modes fiddling around
David Grissom in an interview talking about his Bad Cat and starts wailin
It's some of the best stuff they never recorded!

Agree. I've heard some really good noodlers over the years.

Interesting point.

I think its about mastery....those guys are in such control that they can 1) think off the cuff and b) execute at a high level extemporaneously.

Contrast that with any Saturday afternoon at GC......

I love listening to great guitar playing, whether it's purposeful with an end result being the target, or just plain sittin' and noodling. Point is, it has to be someone up to the task or otherwise I get bored quick. All the guys on your list are A rated noodlers!
