To me, effects are like a red flag to a bull, I hate them but understand some forms of music do indeed require a tone that cannot be gained without them.

For me the very best Fx pedals ive owned were:

Analogman Tubescreamer TS9, never shoulda sold it, sweet tones all the way.

My current Morley Bad Horsie Wah 2, its a gem , none of that stomping away to get it to work and tonally, i love it.

Honourable mention to Barber Direct Drive, a giantkiller and ridiculous value for money.

And the worst I can remember:

Boss MT2 metal zone, two hornets having a farting contest in a jam jar, 10 minutes with this was 9 minutes too long.

Digitech RP6 multifx unit, not a usable tone in the whole thing.

Boss CS3 compressor, simply awful, noise and poor tone by the bucketloads.

MXR C101 compressor, read the hype , bought one, sold it within a week, tone killer !!!!!!

theres a few, lets readabout your gems and your not so goods and did you keep them.

Best:

Lovetone ??? Flange - like a midi synth / fried funkifier in one.

Worst:

Guyatone Fuzz2000 - what was i thinking?

Best:

-Reverend Drive Train II
-Teese Picture Wah
-Cool Cat Chorus
-TC Electronic Chorus/Flanger/PM *Droooool*

Worst:
-Boss Super Chorus
-Boss Dual Overdrive (I'm starting to see a trend here...)
-Digitech RP5 (Eeek!)

Worst:

- DOD Hard Rock Distortion (... I was young and clueless  )
- Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Wah
- Vox Reissue Tonebender
- Boss CE-3 chorus

The good ones are too many to mention ... Teese Wahs, MJMs in general, Barber DDSS, Barber LTD, Soulbender, '70, COT 50 ... each do their own thing well.

Surprising finds (for me): DOD FX-52 Classic Fuzz, DOD FX-65 Stereo Chorus, Ibanez EM-5 Echomachine.

I'll limit myself to one of each.....

Best - EHX Small Clone. I've managed to break it a few times, but it's always sounded good. If the Analogman version sounds just as good, I'll definatly need to update this post.

Worst - DOD Punkifier. I plugged it in, played three chords, and unplugged it. 'Nuff said.

This is really hard to say but bests include:
old Mutron Flanger... unfortunately no longer have it
Axis Research Fuzz Faze.. don't use much but 1 of the best I've owned
Klon.. 1 of the best
ZVex Fuzz Factory .. needed money and sold it years ago.. but loved it
Backstepper-modded BOss Ds1.. use it every week
(I emailed him telling him how much I loved the 2 pedals of his I use all the time, and asked what he was doing these days, and he didn't even return the emails!! YIKES)
I have(or have had) WAY too many other great ones so can't go thru them...

AS for worst... not many.. I hated the Boss cs2 compressor. Some love it
I hated the BlackBox Ultraviolet Fuzz.. I'm sure some love it!
I didn't like a HErmida Fuzz Face I had ... now he's 1 of the hottest pedal guys on this forum
Worst hype of all time for me was the original MJM London Fuzz pedal, but whatever....

Pedals that are great and really cheap are:
DOD FX10 bifet preamp
Ibanez em5 echo machine
Danolectro French Toast octave FUzz
Arion Chorus
etc,etc

Ah you're missing out on a couple of gems man - besides the BiFet FX10 mentioned above, depending on your POV the FX33 Buzz Box is the BEST horrible grinding noise generator ever, or the WORST sounding pedal ever made :) :)

The BEST
My Chicago Iron Pedals
All the stuff that Sean at Love Pedal makes.

Worst:
I haven't owned any but all of the DOD (Donny Osmond Devices) sound pretty crappy.

i think it's too easy to list pedals that are sort of supposed to be crappier than all this boutique stuff, so i really appreciate the posts that list something that OUGHT to or is SUPPOSEDLY good.

so, for the record:

BEST:
Cornish TES delay or close second: Blues Pearl Tejas Trem

WORST:
Trex replica

FWIW, some of the old 70's DOD pedals were fantastic. The old large-bodied, AC powered DOD Chorus 690 Chorus with the footswitchable speed ramping is incredible, and gives a great 'doubled' guitar sound.
It's been on my board for years along with my other favorites; the old red ROSS Flanger, which does both a stupidly good leslie sound and a great 'barracuda' thing, and the Klon, king of the boosts.

Worst? The Prescription Electronics Dual Tone. Two flavors of flatulence. I still don't understand how anybody could have heard that, and said "Mmm, now THAT is good!" Normally I find some reedeeming quality even in the worst pedals, but that one, broke the mold.

At the time, the only amp companies I new about were Marshall and Peavey.....

.....and Ibanez made top of the line effects.....

....boy, have I learned a thing or two since then.

Although, I do still like the DOD Grunge.

Best effect pedal owned to date: Hermida Audio Zendrive - hands down!

Worst: Hard to say. I've owned some that I lost interest in but none that qualified as bad. The worst ones are effects that didn't work out for me but not what I would qualify as bad. OK, I had some sort of Digitech heavy metal distortion when I was younger that really sounded thin and raspy. I don't remember the model though.... American Metal maybe???

BEST:
Klon: its just so damn thick!
V-stack Tweedy
TIM
Addrock Electric Smile
HK Tube Delay (forgot the name)

WORST:
Boss CS-3
Boss RV-3. Its horribly metallic and clangy sounding if there is any sort of drive before it.

Other than that, I'd call the rest of the stuff I've had mediocore, but not the worst.

Best (so far...):

Keeley TS-9/808 Mod
Reverend Drivetrain II
Old Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble (wish I still had that one!)
Startouch ST-2 A/B/Y switcher

Worst:

Stamps Drive-o-matic
Pharaoh Amplifiers Magnolia Overdrive
TS-9DX Turbo Tube Screamer
Dunlop Jimi Hendrix Fuzz/Wah

Biggest Surprize:

'70s DOD 680 Analog Delay - great slapback echoes

i still can't make up my mind on this one - it often does sound really weak, with a weird fizzle in the high end. but every once in a while i fiddle with it and get some good sounds - always in fat mode, and at lower gain settings.

Some of my favorites: rx vibe unit, klon, tim

I always get the two confused, but it was either the Stamps Drive-O-Matic or the PE Dual Tone that was voiced specifically to give Marshall type sounds into BF Fenders. Into anything else, or if you're looking for any other sound, it's horrible. Anyone here remember which is which?

That's the PE Dualtone... I've owned both of those and I could see how for many people they'd be the worst.. To me they weren't as they both at amp situations they excelled at but I can see how people might jump to that conclusion!!! ERIC

Best -

Cornish SS-2 and G-2. I have never been so happy with
grind pedals. The buffers make them sound so 'right' in every situation, they have such a natural amp-like like feel, and run on Duracell's so I never have to change batteries. Perfection.

Honorable mention - TIM
HBE Powerscreamer (the only TS-9 variant
I ever liked)

Worst - So many cheap FX out there. The aforementioned
Stamps Drive-O-Matic was awful. Used one thru a Twin which they were supposed to be voiced for, now I still have permanent
age lines on my face from the pained expressions I made upon hearing it.

The best for me are the ones I've kept....Matchless Hobox, Crowther Hotcake...a few others.

The worst of all time has got to be the TS9 ri.

Great thread! Can I do this:
Best OD-TS808, Tonebone
Delay-Way Huge Aquapuss
Flanger-Foxrox TZF
Phaser-hard to choose, Roland Phase V, vs Infinitephase
Chorus-REALLY hard to choose. CE1 vs ChoralFlange
Fuzz-Fuzzface reissue with wierd NOS Germanium
Switcher-Tonebone
Tremelo-Guyatone Flip

I have to second old DOD pedals, sometimes noisy but at least vintage Boss quality-the best CE2 I ever owned was a DOD!

Bad pedals-just about anything by Zoom, DOD classic fuzz (FZ3?), lots of vintage EH stuff (noisy and hard to fix), Digi RP1-noisy, bad sounding and zipper sounds...

Favorites:

Tonebone Classic
Maxon CP101 Compressor
Zvex Wah Probe
Prescription RX Overdriver
Line 6 Echo Park (yes i picked it over my AD-900)

Bombs:

Dunlop Crybaby
SIB Varidrive (sounded like buzzy metallica)

These are the only pedals I can think of that I hated. I'm a little less critical than some...

Yup! PE Dual Tone into a Super Reverb is great. That's what it was intended to do and that's where it works. Highly charactered pedal and not good for some applications, certainly. I would never drive a Marshall with it. What did you play it into, Bigolcasino?

Vintage non-master Marshalls. :)
Never played Fender guitars thru Fender amps with it. I guess I've never been a fan of an effect that wanted to try to change the natural sound of your amp to something else. Never seems to deliver for me.

It's sorta funny watching all these "Worst Pedal" opinions, as pedals are VERY VERY much dependent on which amp they're paired with , just as RIk M indicated about the Dual Tone ... Meanwhile ,the Stamps did sound like crud with lots of my amps, but funny thing is it was 1 of the best pedals with a Tophat Club Royale!!! Along with the Hotcake and Black Cat OD1... The Black Cat is another and the ROger Mayer Voodoo pedals that sound really cruddy like the Stamps with some amps but great with others.. OH well , almost any od or distortion or fuzz I own is like that really .. The BOss DS1 sucks with some amps and is just fantastic with others , as are Tube Screamers also .

Ditto eric, exactly what I ws going to say.....

Every pedal has its use. Some make great doorstops and fishing weights:D

Long time favorties are:
BJFE Honey Bee and Dyna Red and Baby Pink Boost
Dunlop Univibe chorus
Pedalworx Texas Two Step and McFuzz
Kendrick ABC

New Loves:
Zendrive
MI BLue Boy
BJFE Emerald Green and Sea Blue EQ

Favorites:
-Soldano GTO Supercharger
-Sweet Sound Ultra Vibe
-Boss DD20 delay
-Everman Fuzz Drive

Disappointments:
-DOD FX33 Buzz Box...I normally wouldn't pick on DOD but with the prices these are going for these days...I know they're suppossed to make unusual noises but these are just plain awful
-ZVex Octane 3....I found my Fulltone Ultimate Octave to do the job much better and it could also work as a damn fine fuzz
-ZVex Wooly Mammoth....kept amazing low-end but had no grit to it for a baritone guitar....sounded better on bass but still lacked sizzle

Are you saying that once you buy a boutique amp you're codemned to boutiquery forever?:D

My worst has nothing to do with the amp. It was a Morely wah-sp pedal...so poorly made that it literally started falling apart within 60 minutes of use...sounded aweful through my then non-boutique Peavey Classic.

Favourites include...Teese RMC3, Sherlock Tremit, Sweetsound Mojovibe, Strobostomp (probably scores highly in the 'ugliest' category as well:D ), MI Audio Blue Boy.

No none of my amps are boutique.I just ment that he was using a not so well known or expensive amp & all over the counter fx.
I was using a vintage marshall & about $2000 in boutique fx.

I was accualy quite pissed cuz I had spent so much money & time on my tone & he got just as good of results out of stuff he happened by cheap. His hole rig was less money then my pedalboard.:FM

But you get over that when you realize all you can do is whats right for you.I quickly came to the conclusion that I would never be happy with a rig like his,but also can admit that he sounds great that way & those pedals don't suck just cuz they sucked through my stuff.

I have accualy herd people sound great using digitech stuff ,even modling amps. But they make me throw up,so there ya go.:D

Best:

SIB Varidrive w/ Mullard 12AT7, set to VERY low gain. I've tried to replace it many times because it's such a space hog, but it keeps jumping back on.

Worst:

Boss Fuzz, don't know what model but it was silver. Through my gear at the time (mid nineties) it had the most atrocious freq. spike that could NOT be dialed out.

11-28-2004, 09:28 PM
Best:

Pro Analog Dual Drive (my favorite overdrive I've played so far. It's perfect. Completely transparent and very dynamic.

MJM Blues Devil OD (quality 808 styled overdrive)

Worst:

MXR Double Shot Distortion - no Marshall tone through a Fender at all (like the Guitar Player reviewer hyped it to be). It was muddy, had tons of hum and hiss, and sounded terrible... nothing remotely close to passable. I'd rather play through a DOD Grunge pedal ;)

tedm
11-28-2004, 09:37 PM
best: fulltone '69, early one from '97

worst: Dunlop JH Octave Fuzz, so bad, I thought it was broken and sent it back, they returned it and said it was perfect, WTF??!!

Biggest surprise -- Danelectro PBJ delay little plasticky thing.

Best:
Teese Picture Wah
Fulltone Clyde Wah
Fulltone Choraleflange
Swamp Thang Trem
Klon Centaur
Stampede SOV-1 OD
M.I. Audio BlueBoy
Visual Sound Route 66
DLS Echotap
Line6 DL4 delay
Xotic AC Booster
Barber Tone Pump EQ
Barber Burn Unit EQ
Maxon CP101 Compressor
VHT Valvulator...has to be here, as it maximizes tone from my pedals.
BOSS ME50 multifx...honorable mention, as it does very nice efx (NOT OD, though)

Worst:
Fulltone Ultimate Octave
Fulltone Clyde Deluxe Wah
Prescription DualTone
Reverend Drivetrain II (I love the DT 1, however)
BJFE Baby Blue...never got this one.
Old Crybaby Wah
Digitech RP10...yech!

Favorite: Tim, M.I. Audio Blue Boy, Japanese CS-2 (about 20 years old; original owner)

Worse: One more for the Metal Zone. Bought it in 96 or 97 played it for one set put it back in the box and it has been there ever since. I guess now it qualifies for NOS. Probably should sell it but I would feel guilty.

Best with my gear at various times:

Fulltone Deja Vibe - (I use this with all my gear, I love it gooshing up OD)
Fulltone Supa-Trem (seems good with everything)
Mesa V-1 (with Bogner Metropolis)
Teese Picture Wah (unbelievably good with Metropolis)
Fulltone Clyde Deluxe (I like it with everything)
Pedalworx Texas Two Step (with Mesa Tremoverb)
Budda Wah (with high gain amps)

Stuff I just couldn't get to sound good with any of my gear:

Mesa V-Twin
DOD Compressor
Visual Sound H2O

Stuff that really sounded great but you really had to work it into an amp with an effects loop:

TC Electronic Chorus/Flanger
Yamaha UD Stomp

tonemandan
12-03-2004, 03:47 PM
Best:

Demeter Tremulator-oh so right with every amp and buffered too!

Analogman King of Tone-rules with a Tele and a Fender amp-only pedal I ever used that just did not sound like a pedal

Arion Stereo Chorus-wicked wobbles from a cheapo pedal-sounds HUGE

TC electronics Chorus/Flange-it's a classic, gotta have it

Klon Centaur-still rules for sending a Marshall circuit into Warren Haynes territory.

Worst:

Made the mistake of buying one of those Digitech multi effects units when they first came out. Man I HATE that processed tone. Most of the multi units available today have the same problem to me. Every guitar sounds the same, no touch sensitivity, you might as well phone your part into the gig.

A lot of the art in guitar pedals is the pedal order, not only the amp. Some pedals sound like crap in front of another pedal, sound perfect when reversed, go figure.

Best:
Teese RMC3 Custom Wah
Sweet Sound MojoVibe
Janglebox Compressor
Analogman King of Tone
Clark Gainster
TIM Overdrive
Menatone Howie
Menatone Dirty Blonde
Menatone Top Boost in a Can
Maxon AD-80 Delay
MJM Blues Devil
BJFE Dyna Red
BJFE Emerald Green
Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive
Goodrich 120 Volume Pedal
Xotic AC Booster
Analogman BiComp
Analogman Clone Chorus
BBE Stinger Aural Enhancer

Worst:
DOD Wah Volume - pure garbage!
Jersey Girl Hustlemaker Booster - pure crap!
Tokai TXC-1 Exciter - it only added noise!

I'll probably think of a few more once I post...

Best:
Foxrox Paradox TZF
Crybaby 535Q
DIY stuff that I will never part with:
Fulltone '69' Fuzz clone
Rangemaster clone (awesome boost)
Craig Anderton Envelope Controllable Phase Shifter
John Hollis design chorus "Zombie Chorus" (mine's tick free; switches between CE-2 and Small Clone's delay time; a little swishy though, but has a nice raw warmth to it)

Worst:
Boss BF-2 Flanger (until I fiddled with it--no more tin can sound now)
DOD Flashback Fuzz
Ibanez Soundtank series "Classic Metal" pedal
Boss CE3 Chorus

Oh... this is a touchy subject for me.

I've owned quite a few pedals and even some rack FX units. I've sold just about every effect I've ever owned. It's odd: they're seductive yet disappointing in the long run. Kind of like a sex partner who's good at one thing but otherwise vapid and annoying to be with... I guess you could think of it as a tradeoff. ;)

WRT pedals, I'm not going to mention brand names or models. I've been through enough pedals to realize that it's the kind of effect that annoys me more than any specific pedal.

Wah pedals are high on my "why do I even bother?" list. Ditto compressors, modulation effects, and guitar synths or synth-like effects.

I'm very tolerant of reverbs, and only a little less so of echo effects. Volume pedals and EQs are OK, for the most part.

Distortion pedals are in the middle ground. I think of them as a (sometimes) necessary eveil. (Edit: "eveil"? Um, you know what I meant...) I'd rather get a good cranked-amp tone.

spentron
12-03-2004, 11:34 PM
I beat all of you to worst: the Hurricane-surf-wah pedal. I made a surf generator 100 times better, my Radio Shack siren module was 10 times better, and the wah was bad too. Shame is, they're probably worth even more now than the original Bassballs I wired the wah pot to as a sensitivity pedal.

Worst - bar none, the Arion SD-1 Stereo Distortion pedal. Everything about it was plastic - the case, the knobs, the pots, the sound was gritty, angular, unpleasant, unworkable. Bleccch.

I have a page on good things I found to do with mine ( http://www.intergate.com/~spentron/guitartech.html... and I thought it sucked at first too. But the two outputs are useful even if you never engage the distortion, and the distortion is pure shining plastic smoothness.

But then, I even managed to trick a Boss CS-2 compressor into making some cool sounds. Almost all my pedals have been situationally good except maybe the purple Ibanez chorus. EDIT ADD after seeing last post before this: many of my pedals have grown on me, rather than gotten old, although they can get rotated out sometimes... I think it has to do with expectations.

I wonder about some effects that the reason they sound like crap is due to where it's (mis)placed in the signal chain. I know that with my TZF it sounds bad going into the front of a dirty amp. That's why I have my amp "Simonized" every month or so to keep it clean...hardee-har-har!

The best I've found for me

1. Fulltone choralflange. It has so much capability that it can become frustrating. Just work with changing one setting at a time. The possibilities go on forever.
2. Blackstone Appliance Overdrive. This pedal sounds great with everything, and if it doesn't just tweak the internal trimmers.
3. Chicago Iron Octavian. Just fabulous.
4. Z Vex Fuzz Factory. Had one sold it, stupid, now looking for another.
5. BSM HS treble booster. Sounds bad playing alone but great playing with the band.

The worst I've found

1. Some destination robo sphere? Supposed to emulate a leslie I don't get it, sounds like s**t. Not the H&K, this pedal is good.
2. Prescription electronics, dual drive and octave pedal, not too impressed with their offerings.
3. A lot of the cheap stuff, I don't usually bother, although I bought a Danelectro slap back echo which sounds good, go figure.
4. The Distortion Pro. Initially, I liked and then soon tired of all the mud.
5. Many others which I try to forget ASAP.

Best (as measured by their continued presence):

Boss DM-2 (simplest amd most reliable delay)
Boss TU-2 (most practical)
Bad Bob (subtle clean boost)
Boss TR-2 (no volume drop for me)

Still working on/trying to like:

Boss DD-20
Boss CE-2 (Keeley mod?)

Worst:

Hard to say; with today's market if I don't like it someone else will, so no reason to complain.

So funny to read this stuff. Fulltone Ultimate Octave as one of the WORST??? I loved mine.

Anyway for BEST, I am continually impressed by my Time Machine Boost. The COT50, with the right amp and guitar was heaven sent. The Keeley Compressor and Java Boost were extremely impressive to me as well. Same goes for Analogman Sunface.

I haven't any "bad" boutique pedals. I did have a Dunlop "univibe" that I thought sounded absolutely awful, but I turned that into a 4-track. Way more useful at the time.

Worst - that's easy - BOSS Acoustic "Simulator". It sucked. A lot.

Best - everything that's on my pedalboard RIGHT NOW is the best I've ever used :D

I agree! I loved the germanium 'clean' boost but not the OD. I wish I could buy a one-knob pedal of just the boost. It was fat and germ-y, unlike any other I've had. It was THE pedal for sending my Rivera's dirty channel over the top.

I was just curious what you did not like about the Danelectro FabTone. I just got one on ebay and it arrived today. On first listen I liked it and I am looking forward to getting to know it a little better. What was it you did not like?

David,

Glad someone around here gives my opinion some attention.
But many of the worst pedals I've tried have been listed as the best by others. Pedals that sound so cheap and transistory I am truly perplexed how others dig them.

If you tried all the pedals listed, you wouldn't be in complete agreement with me or anyone else. Just like the foods we eat, you know what flavors you like and don't.

As for saving your money, yeah we would all not want to waste money. But just like food, sometimes you just have to try it to know what you like and don't.

Personally, I would like to know what you did or didn't like. I've heard a lot of people say they didn't like the Tim pedal. I was like; how? I think it mostly depends on what your are using a pedal for. One pedal that I thought was very good but it didn't work for me was the Analogman clone chorus pedal. If I was playing classic rock, it would be on my board. It was too thick for my slightly chorused country tastes so I sold it. Maybe we should state why pedals that we know a lot of people, like didn't work for us. I'm all for trying to save people money. BTW, I just ordered the new analogman KOT. I've been on the waiting list forever. I will do a comparison of it and the Tim pedal and post it out here. One of the two will probably go on the selling block unless they just sound great together.

Why is it when we see a small space left on our pedal boards we just have to fill it?

I'm going to do another light overdrive test this weekend. The TIM will be included. I'll be checking out the TIM, liquid sunshine, and the Honey Bee. I'll report back.

All pedals have to be in front of the TIM. Something about it's output impedance that make all pedals following it sound nasal. I've found that if you have pedals that give you a great lead tone, the TIM can eq it to get a great rhythm sound. I only would use the normal channel. The designer of the TIM clearly stated to me that the TIM doesn't sound good with the amp at low volumes. He designed it to work with your amp at gig levels. So when you test drive your TIM, do so at gig levels.

Interesting. I run my M.I. Blue Boy after my Tim and it sounds much better than before it. I will try again this weekend with them reversed.

Maybe it's because I let the Tim do a very slight crunch and then step on the blue boy for enhanced overdrive. The tim so far is the best I seen at doing crunch r&r chording. (i.e. " the start of "Keep Your Hands to Yourself"). The blue boy is set for a nice smooth blues overdrive but when stepped on in conjunction with the Tim gets more into classic rock territory. My amp is a Dr. Z Z28 which loves pedals because of the EF86 in V1.

Probably true, I have no reason to doubt you.
With my tests, Blackstone, Pedalworx, V-stacks, etc... all sounded very nasal following the TIM.

I had the same problem with the vstack. For the vstack to sound good, I had to re-eq my amp which kind of left me hanging when I had to go back to clean country picking. I finally sold the vstack. That pedal would be fun if I was playing more searing rock and roll.

I had the vstack classic and yes it did sort of take over my sound. i was using it live. I wish I had tried recording with it. i just don't do enough studio stuff to keep the pedal around.

Favorites:

Analogman KoT - I won't lie... I was almost tempted to sell it for the unreal prices these are getting on Ebay ($400++!!), but I just can't. It sounds too good.
Hermida Mosferatu - took some getting used to, but now I can't get enough. Awesome tone and sustain.
Boss DD3 w/ high cut mod - the perfect delay for me: simple and sounds great. The only non-true bypass on my board.
Fulltone Clyde Wah - my all-time favorite wah.

Least favorites:

Homebrew Electronics Power Screamer - too harsh and finicky... sure looked cool though.
EH Memory Man Deluxe - too mushy and BIG.

Great stuff that just didn't work for me:

Analogman Clone Chorus - didn't use it enough
Teese Wizard Wah - too dark.
Foxrox ZIM - built unbelievably well, cool concept, sounds nice, but didn't like the detented knobs that kept forcing me into a little less or a little more than I wanted. The voice circuit was also cool to tweak, but I found I never used it in real-life situations.

Best: Fulltone Clyde Deluxe wah - really sweet sounding wah - smooth sweep and doesn't get harsh, but with enough top end to do the funk thing.

Worst: Boss PW10 V-Wah - talk about true bypass - with this pedal, the distortion effect was active even with the pedal switched off - really odd to look down at all your pedals, see that they're all off, but have loads of drive going on when it shouldn't be - you could turn the distortion off by turning its control down but still seems like a major flaw. I then found that, also when the pedal was off, if you clicked through the presets with the heel switch, you could hear some of the effect bleeding through. Not sure if mine had some sort of problem as this seems like a pretty fundamental flaw. Sold it and got the Fulltone.

I take back my thumbs up on the Z Vex Fuzz Factory. I just bought a newer version on ebay and for whatever reason I could not get it to sound good at all. The fuzz settings on this model all decayed into noise and I don't know why. It seemed like the older model I had at one time worked better. I ended up selling the pedal right away and am now not recommending the fuzz factory anymore (maybe an older one?). I was really disappointed to say the least, at least I have my BSM-OR and Blackstone Appliance pedal. Anybody else ever compare an old FF to a new one?

The Dual Tone makes everything dark and murky, but I gotta say, there are times when that really works as a lead tone. I liked it when I played on it, for leads... but the rhythm and lead settings were functionally equivalent, and it would have to be the worst possible boost pedal ever, if you like your unaltered tone.

How 'old' and 'new' do you mean? I've got an older (2000) stripboard one, and a newer (2002) PCB one. There is a definite difference in tone, but it's not as much as 'good' vs. 'bad' - the older one is a bit more crackly and somehow 'organic', the newer one a little smoother and crunchier. They do apparently vary a bit even between identical ones as well, so maybe you've just got an odd one... or maybe it isn't working right. Have you tried contacting ZVex?

I already sold it but earlier one was from around 1997? It was called the "red special" My newer one was from 2003 or 04. It just didn't seem to sustain it would always go off into garble no matter how I set it, and believe me I know what to do. It's ok, I have plent of other stuff which I think works far better for my needs.

I just bought a Luxury Drive by TC Jauernig Electronics. It is a simple boost.
I bought it to step on and off to take solos. I stepped on it the first time and so liked the enhanced "bigness" of my tone that I never turn it off now. It was what the Dr. ordered for my ear. Best I can describe it is if I was using one 2 X 10 cabinet, I just added another.

For best and worst Boss PW 10 Wah.

I think some of the wahs are very good and like the choice and the construction and the fact it is optical, but they are so hard to figure out how to use. I know that there is great stuff inside - but how to get to it.

Best deal and suprise. Zoom HL 01. $50 CDN new. Built like a tank and suprisingly good tone for the higher gain crowd.

Best:

Analogman TS808 – Godlyke with some amps (tweed), mediocre to poor with others. Still, when ya gotta have it, ya gotta have it.
Keely modded Blues Driver – Similar in both quality and usefulness to the above pedal, but with a slightly different voice.
EH Holy Grail – Cheap and effective.
Line 6 DL4 – Not perfect, but very, very versatile.
Vstack – Not perfect, but tons of fun.

Worst:

Mesa/Boogie V-Twin – Able to make any amp sound bad.
Marshall Guv'nor – The modern one... yuck.
Keely Java Boost – Tried hard to like this pedal... never did.

Pawn Shop Prize:

Arion SCH-1 Chorus – Constructed from thin plastic and the battery cover won't stay on. One of the best sounding chorus pedals ever made. Got mine for 40 bucks.

The One That Got Away:

Fulltone Soulbender – Just a good, basic fuzz pedal. Reasonably subtle (well... as subtle as you can get with a fuzz pedal) and eminently useful. Never shoulda sold it.

Most Incomprehensible:

TIM – I've written this guy like five emails over six months. He never responds. People swear this is the greatest thing since sliced bread... “all ya gotta do is send him an email...” wtf???

Best---

Zoom 8050 1/2 rack processor. Long discontinued and I've tried countless modeling amps to replace it. Heck, I've even bought and returned modeling amps by Line6, Rocktron and too many others.

They just can't touch what this processor can do. The articulation and note seperation is outstanding. I ended up buying a Fender 65' reissue Twin reverb to use with it.

If it ever breaks down, I'm screwed. It is my multiple of sounds.
I will say the Vox VTX60 sounded pretty good when I demo'd it in a store.

Most stomp boxes just don't do it for me.

2. Lovepedal 1/2 watt amp ( not really a pedal but..) poorly assembled, which I believe to be an exception after all I have read here, not a good sign for me, and just disappointed me overall.

Worse:

Every multi-effects pedal I have tried, including the RP-200 that I bought. If you're just starting out with an electric set-up it might give you an idea of how different effects can create the sounds you're looking for, but for me it was crap.

Best:

Worst:
SPF Red Threat, AMT Fatal Tube

Hard to come up with the "Best" since I dig all the pedals on my board right now, esp. the Screw Driver and Tube Zone and AM Chorus, and... etc. So I guess 'best' to me = flawless with absolutely no shortcomings IMO. Like, if you try to think of anything to improve the sound(s) of the pedal, nothing comes to mind.

The 'worst'... well, there were plenty of pedals that didn't work out for me, but that doesn't mean I didn't like them or understand their use in a different application. So the 'worst' are the ones that had me scratching my head thinking "Who in god's name would want something like this!?".

Best ...... Klon !! ... doesn't do alot but what it does is magic !! Makes good amps great and great amps GODLIKE ! boosts your note bloom ! adds depth and grit .. Great Grit Too !!!! .. You must play one !! I command it !!!!!!

Worst ...... Mesa Boogie V - Twin pedal .. biggest piece of %^^&@#$ .. nothing but a mud factory ... I don't think the tone controls on that thing are actually hooked up to pots .. didn't seem to do anything when i turned them ... and don't even try to tell me I should've put in better tubes .. I tried every tube under the sun...12ax7,12au7,12at7 Telefunken, Amperex,Mullard, etc . I sell NOS tubes on Ebay and nothing helped it!!!

Best: I love my Klon too for live applications, but it's a little noisy for recording. I can't say enough about the Timmy. It seems made for my rig and it seems to stack well with everything.

Worst: I used to have a CS-2 or 3, I can't remember. I can recall that it used to inhale my chain. I just thought I wasn't a compression guy or I didn't know how to use it, but now I have a Tone Press and it's on unless I'm using higher gain. The problem wasn't me, it was Boss.

Honorable mention for the MT-2. I hated it so much I sold it. Then I bought another one just to remind me how much I hated it. So I got the second one modded by Keeley. Nope. Sold it too.

nappyD - if you ever get a 'deal' on a DD-6 again or want to revisit it, the Analogman Hi-Cut mod is a necessity. If the 'crispness' of the repeats was your issue, this completely takes care of that and then some!

My favorites:
Any TS-808 or TS-9
EH Microsynth (Freakin awesome sounding.. The pedal is better than the very rare rack mount version EH put outt. I actually use a Bass Micro in my rack.)
EH Graphic Fuzz (Big Muff with graphic EQ)
MXR Phase 90 (I like it better than the Phase 100 or 45)
MXR Analog Delay
ADA Flanger
Boomerang Phase Sampler
Roland Funny Cat (Nothing else sounded like that one..)
The Ludwig thing that wasn't really a pedal.. (Very cheesy sounding but cool cheesy)
Boss T-Wah
Pearl Octaver
Whammy 1 pedal
DOD Envelope Follower (Not all DOD stuff was bad..)

Bad:
Chandler or any other type Tube Driver (Never liked the sound of any of that guys (Butler?) stuff. The amps, the reverbs, nothing.)
Mesa V-Twin (Bought it, tried to like it.. Didn't. Held on to it for years and then made money on it..)
Boss Metal Zone (Read a review in GP about how great it was and saw a used one at a pawn shop soon after.. Terrible.)

After I post this I'll think of more..

Best....wow...right now, I'm in love with my Fulltone OCD....got really fond memories of my early 80's MIJ Arion Stereo Chorus.

Worst...lotsa turkeys out there for me, but I didn't like my re-issue MXR Phase 90 until I did the R28 "script" mod.

It is interesting to see how some of my favorite pedals are high on some people's "worst" lists, and some of my stinkers are on peoples "best".

I agree that it depends on the rest of your rig...and YOU.

That's interesting Ben, why didn't the AMT work out for you? I've heard people rave about the fatal tube.

The pedals I have now sound good on my rig:
Barber tone press compressor
Barber LTD, absolutely killer tone
T.C.Jauernig Gristle king, another great OD/boost
AMT California sound, great for metal and hard rock, models a mesa boogie

Didn't like these:
Boss DS-1, absolutely the worst, tinny metallic sounding piece of ***
Danelectro Daddy-o, lame excuse for a fart, sounded nasty and fizzy at any setting
Boss HM-2, I was young and clueless
Boss SD-2 dual overdrive, crunch channel sucks ***, lead channel is ok though
DOD (?) American metal
DOD supra distortion
Digitech grunge(?)
Digitech death metal (oh god! Who other than Gwar or Napalm death would use this?)
Boss Xtortion (Yeuchhh)
Boss super feedbacker distortion (has anyone ever used this? I couldn't)
Boss SD-1 (maybe mine was a sub-average unit, it killed tone when bypassed)
and most other Danelectro and DOD pedals I've tried turned me off.

PS: It has to be completely "rig dependent" to sound good!

The worst:

Anything mass produced that is'nt/was'nt built by one of the guys above that I might be ashamed to post a photo of or try out at a show.

.......now, can we please get back to asking questions that will allow us to show more numerous photos of our gear?? Please!

Don't really have a best but I know the worst pedal i've ever owned was a stock Boss metalzone. Just had that awful chainsaw processed buzzy sound. Didn't even bother trying to mod it. Threw it away so that no one else would be victimized by it.

best so far:
Way Huge Saffron Squeeze, my number 1 treasured pedal
Xotic AC booster: I don't feel as bad carting this one around for a boost
Barb EQ: still finding the right matches per guitar and amp

worst:
Danelectro Sitar Swami: bought it to try some circuit bending on it. basically a pitiful ring mod/flanger/slapback. no control and pretty useless in terms of tinkering.

i've had and stil have a lot of the "worsts" and some "bests" mentioned here that ended up having some dedicated uses. they all have a "personality" that can have the right application, unfortunately GAS attacks and they are sold off for some replacement with an equally un-amazing result. Once upon a time..I bought my first effects processor - Zoom 505 II..even though I'd been playing for 3 months...I thought it sounded like crap..I sold it..and bought a Digitech rp200..wasnt too happy but it sounded ok...2 years later...I saved up enough and bought a whole range of boss and dod pedals....ugh...the dod chorus sounded like it added more compression than chorus...squeezed the life outa my sound...the grunge and overdrive pedal were so noisy....and the boss cs-3 was something i could not get any use out of....

sold them all...only kept my trusty 525-q...bought a gt-8...ended up selling the 535 q cos it didnt make a diff to then gt-8..then 6 months back i was introduced to the world of boutique...

Well I don't like the term worst but one of the most disappointing for me would have to be the Aramat Green Machine.

I actually found it to be one of the most mid-humped bass chopping TS style pedals that I've tried and it has some addtional gain on tap to remove even more clarity.

Truly uninspiring for me.

gotta agree with the metal zone as being not good (soooo trying to talk a friend out of buying one.)... however i was circuit bending mine one day and it had some neato noises in it. i was getting pumped that it might have some use for me but then sadly it died as i was trying to drill a hole in it for a switch. i hit something on the circuit board and broke it.

Sorry if I've struck a nerve. I actually had great hopes for the Swamp-Thang as the solution to my trem needs.

The unit I had was kind of dark and gritty sounding, not what I think of as "swampy". I still have not yet found the perfect trem pedal,(tried Demeter, Supra-Trem, Austone and Swamp-Thang) but I'll keep on looking.

Best = SPF Ego booster.

Hi Jockman,

Would you kindly elaborate on the S.P.F 'Ego Booster' ? I have my eye on that or the Barber Launch Pad / MXR Line booster / MI Audio 'Boost'n'Buff' - as a clean booster to lift the volume of my single coil guitars and yet retain/ add some sparkle before going into the amp.

Any input would be gratefully recieved

Thanks.

just tried the super 6 & the purple plexi for the first time over the weekend...gotta say, both tied for the worst pedals i've ever tried :(

not dissin' the brand in any way, they just didn't hit it off with me...i wanted to like em, really did...but they just didn't do it for me

absolute worst piece of trash of all time. i was given an entire store display setup of danelectro pedals for free for some odd reason (complete with oversized stupidly heavy display unit), all but one (the reverse delay was alright) were terrible, but this one took the cake. and to this day goes down in the books as the most useless poorly designed junk pedal to exist.

-the on/off button is in a place you cant hit with your foot
-there are no knobs, only plastic buttons to adjust setting, and only 4 options to choose from
-the rocker pedal has no middle ground, its either up or down, the difference between them is so minute as to completely negate it
-its shaped like a stupid car
-it is the worst sounding pedal ive ever heard, kills any tone, sounds tiny and cheap and muddy

i hate it. i actually hate it. but i keep it around to remind myself that evil exists in this world.

I'm gonna throw two in on "best" and "worst" - first is best regardless of price, second is best for effect and value.

Best - Effectrode Tube Vibe - this thing is BAD A$$! Giant pedal, expensive, but sounds unbelievable.

Best Value and Sound - Pfeiffer Phaser ($110'ish) - little known pedal, not the coolest looking thing, but far and away the best phaser for under $200.

Now for the Worst - 1st over-hyped and over priced 2nd - just plain crappy sounding...

1 - TREX Replica - how in the world this thing got the review it did is beyond me - yes, it does sound good, but it's a one-trick pony that is horribly overpriced and hyped for what it offers. The "brown" switch really doesn't change much and I actually found myself missing my simple old boss DD5! Have since switched to an Eventide Timefactor - very cool, but a real study to fully learn.

2 - Boss DS-2 - a bastardization of the DS-1 which was a great pedal on it's own.

Best: Dallas Rangemaster. I have had 4. Some are noisy and non-musical. But when you get the right one (like I currently have) there is simply nothing better.

Worst: Tycobrahe Octavia: Noisy, distorted beast that does more to obscure the effect than enhance the octave ring (and I have had 3 over the years). Heck, the 200 dollar foxrox octron is much better, not to mention the older optical Mayer Octavias.

Distortion: Fulldrive, Timmy and OCD.
Phaser: Moog Phaser and Pigtronix EP-2 (super versatile but the Moog sound wise wins hands down... Talk about the Juiciest phase sounds in 12-Stage mode).
Fuzz: Zvex Fuzz Probe
Delay: MXR Carbon Copy, Diamond Memory Lane (2?), Pigtronix Echolution, Moog Analog Delay (wins hands down... Dark repeats are killer... yes i'm a huge moog fan, can someone tell me why they are underappreciated?)
Envelope Filter: Moog Lowpass Filter
Synth Pedals: Does the MXR Bluebox Count? (certainly sounds like a Synth) and the Moog Freqbox.
Chorus: Diamond Halo Chorus... I was playing with someone elses rig and he had a Digitech Whammy which was in Detune Mode... sounded pretty good, although I can't be 100% sure cuz I was playing live.
Octavia Fuzz: Fulltone Ultimate Octave. The Fuzz is ok but the Octave is awesome! Pigtronix OFO Distnortion
Other: Moog Ring Mod can do Funk and Fusion pretty good. The tremolo on it is good too. And Moog MuRF

Worst:

Since this is subjective...

Best (for me): DamageControl Glass Nexus, JangleBox, Nova Drive, EH BMP with Tone Wicker, Damage Control Liquid Blues. I sold a Nova System, and regret it, will likely get another.

I'm somewhat interested in the Empress and Frantone Vibutron, but am unwilling to gamble (sight unseen) at this point.

Right now the pedal that is the best I have tried/owned is the Skreddy Echo. This was the first pedal that I had to deal with the whole waiting list deal, which of course places expectations on it that could easily not be met. I own a Empress VMSD, so it had some competition coming in. Once I plugged the Skreddy in and gave it a whirl, I must say worth the wait and a fantastic delay pedal.

Worst I've owned/still own:

Mesa V-twin- Try to make one sound good... I dare you! Completely useless, ear-grating mud through any amp. Yes, I tried different tubes.

Fulltone Distortion Pro- Mud. That's about it.

Rat- To be fair, I had a mid-ish 90's RI. Couldn't ever find a good tone in it. To me, Rats only sound ok when I'm not the one playing them. Weird.

No love for the Devster anymore, huh? Oh well, there's lots of fuzz out there; certainly enough to go around.

Best:
Radial Tonebone Classic
MXR Carbon Copy
BYOC Shredder
EHX LPB-1
Devi Ever Shoegazer

Worst:
Swollen Pickle MKII (GOD, I wanted that one to be good )

I have to agree with an above poster, I don't think DS-1's are all that bad. And I've gotten some really nice sounds out of my Marshall Guvnor II, IDK.

MXR JH fuzz octave...at first I thought it was faulty...nope thats how it sounds they told me....an hysterical joke played on me by MXR...I laughed till I stopped.

Neunaber Wet Reverb....this thing cost me $200 USD and sounds not like reverb but your in a large ambient hall with a 1000 people farting at the same time while singing out of key like Anthony Kiedis...yeah you got me Neunaber!

Best: T Pedals T Fuzz

Worst: gear that doesn't work... and a mention to my Ronsound Teaser Fuzz. I scored it second hand in Manchester a few years back. It has a #17 serial number, it's exceptionally well made, just is sooo lame. Or maybe I'm not the greatest Bolin fan around...

I've learned that you can put almost anything to good use but the Teaser proved to be a difficult one to deal with. Would love to try his Hairpie though.

How did Neunaber get you? Why didn't you just return the pedal for a full refund? Did it take you more than the 15 days he allows for full refund returns to decide you did not like it? I was just curious because you seem so passionate about pedals you don't like.
