I am a tube amp guy all the way. I have decided that I need a backup rig for gigging. I have a fear that my amp will go down or my pedal board will malfunction or whatever. So I got a Pocket POD.
Wow.
This thing has some great tones. Also, the effects are great. The chorus, flanger, delay, reverb, etc. are all great.
Are the more expensive ones (I have my eye on the X3) even better sounding or just more versital?
I use it to teach and it works out well since its portable. Wish they would come out with an update

I believe the PocketPod is a repackaged Pod 2. I didn't like the Pod XT, but the X3 Live I have is the best thing I've heard from Line 6 so I'd say that it is better-sounding and more versatile.

I'm reasonably certain the POD XT and the POD X3 use the same amp models and effects, and that the X3 just has more of each, plus some features the XT doesn't. If you like how the X3 sounds then there's no reason the XT should sound bad.
I was going to say the newer L6 stuff would sound better, but if the Pocket POD really is based on the POD 2.0, then there's a chance you're one of the people who thinks older Line 6 stuff sounds better than newer Line 6 stuff. It's different, but whether or not it's better is somewhat up to interpretation, I think.

I got one a while back on ebay for cheap as an alternate to my aging Pandora PX4. I dig it, and recommend checking out the deep editing software for it that Line6 has (free but you gotta sign up).

Yes the x3 is a big step up. Not only in tone but also the features and the editing. You should give it a try.try.

I got one as a cheap solution to carrying around to play at a friend's place.
It doesn't sound good at all through a small Marshall set for a neutral clean tone; the sound via headphones is ridiculously better. What would be good to use to get the same sound I'm hearing via the headphones.....a keyboard amp, maybe?

Power Engine, Atomic Reactor, keyboard amp, powered monitor, etc.

I used to have a marshal combo and my Pod X3 sounded dreadful through it, they just did not go well together, they were fine on their own but together :barf
I use a PA all the time now for live and for practice I use a Spider Jam that is really good for practice and takes the Pod very well.

Like Guitbeef says, get the Vyzex editor for your Pocket POD and you can create really excellent patches vs. the presets.
Go to: http://www.line6.com/software/index.html and select Pocket POD from the first drop-down menu, then click "go". The Vyzex editor should be the top choice.
It basically gives you all the controls & deep editing available on a POD 2.0, and allows you to save your own patches to the Pocket POD. :aok

Always intrigued by small and good sounding, I picked one up but after total failure to get my laptop to find the midi connection, I sent it back. There were too many reasons why the midi detection could have failed (and I did try), but I regard this as a software design flaw. I could be wrong, but for me, a piece of gear needs to be relatively hassle free. In contrast, I had no problem with this laptop connecting to and having a functioning editor with the AxeFx as well as the MagicStomp. Oh well.......

I'm sorry to hear that. I just plugged mine in via USB (the Pocket POD has a USB jack and it should just pop up), and started tweaking sounds with Vyzex right away.
...like I said, sorry you had problems getting yours to work. :(

Yeah, thanks Dale (and hi!). I was disappointed also. I used the usb cable, etc. It's all very straightforward, but the computer refused to 'see' the POD. The help text discusses issues with some laptop USB ports, conflicts with Logitech wireless mice (I use one), etc. I'm no expert, but not a total newbie to this. They suggested I tweak some registry settings and at that point, I put it all back in the box.

A must for the Pocket POD is the AC power supply. If you are absent minded like me you will leave your guitar or USB cable plugged in and drain the batteries very quickly.
