I did some searching but could not find any good, simple comparision between the three. Anyone with clear info on the differences between the three? Thanks.

The Personal is the fanciest, with ebony fretboard, gold plating, pearl inlay on the fretboard and headstock, and more binding than the others. It also has an XLR jack and volume control on the upper treble bout for your handy mic on a gooseneck rig. I almost forgot the "fretless wonder" frets, which, personally, I hate.

The Professional is a dressed-down version, with nickle plating, rosewood board and plastic inlay. No mic input, either.

The Recording is the "newer" model. It's more similar to the Pro with a rosewood board and chrome hardware, but it does have the headstock inlay. Unlike the other two, it has the required impedance-matching transformer built in--if you get one of the others, make sure it includes the transformer cable or plan on rigging something up.

One other difference in that the first two are larger than your average Paul by about 1.25". The Recording is normal Lester size. It was also available in white.

This was my Personal during the '70's:

I had a "Personal", wish I'd never sold it. Great neck. The "Personal" was all low-impedance, and came with a Gibson impedance matcher which had an old style coaxial high Z mic cable. It was heavily arched and weighed a ton. Probably the best sounding pickups I ever heard.

Great guitars, as long as you have a strong back.....very heavy, possibly one of the most amazing clean tones ever ! Love my Personal.

The Signature was the 335-ish semi hollow. Higher output low-Z pickups, different electronics, but a cool guitar.

And they made a Les Paul amp to go with the guitar that had the low impedance input.
