View Full Version : A pedal that will make my Vox Night Train's clean tone sound like its OD tone?

I know it sounds odd....but I love the chimey cleans on the bright setting of my Vox Night train amp......and I love the chimey OD tone in its thick mode....you can't switch between them on the fly....so I'd like to set it up in its bright clean mode and use a pedal to come close to what it sounds like in thick OD mode. Any suggestions.....maybe a Vox like pedal? Or others? I play at lower volume levels....not gig levels.

Maybe this is overly simplistic, but have you tried a clean boost? Something like the AMZ MosFET booster won't color the tone of the amp, but it will crank the gain up. That *should* make your amp go from clean to dirt by stomping. I don't know if it will sound the same as the amp on 11, but you'll retain the base tone of the amp.

The Night Trains Thick mode OD sounds just like the BJF Emerald Green Distortion Machine.

I have a TC Electronic Nova Drive, the OD side is very transparent. Using a Rickenbacker I was able to get Beatles clean jangle and chime (e.g., Ticket to Ride), hit the OD side of the ND and get instant Day Tripper like tone. The OD settings if not set to max, really sounded like the amp's natural OD. YMMV. The distortion side is very sweet as well, very smooth and articulate. I was running this into a Fender Deco Tone amp set to clean (Channel Vol = 4, Master Vol = 3 or so). I don't use dirt pedals with my AC15 or AC4 (at least not yet), as I can control the breakup using my guitar volume fairly well.

I think at that price point, the OP might be better served by buying a used Night Train so he could have one clean and one driven and use an a/b box to switch between the two.

I mean, that would take up more space, but it's always cool to have *another* tube amp. :aok

But on the other hand, you'd own a BJF pedal, which is also a cool thing. Maybe not as cool as tube amp, but still pretty cool.

Perhaps try out Wampler's Cranked AC. With my amps, it mimics the sound of an overdrive AC30 very well.

That is a good point.

Get any clean boost pedal, preferrably one with bass and tone controls. Put the volume and gain on 10, adjust treble to suit.

I have been getting good results using my TIM to get that NT OD sound over on the Bright mode.

The Night Trains Thick mode OD sounds just like the BJF Emerald Green Distortion Machine.

That is interesting.

I have been playing the Thick mode a lot more lately and really am digging it - especially pushing it with the TIM.

I still think the NT is an underrated amp.

Great thoughts folks. I've tried a clean boost, but it gets way to loud for my home use. That BJF pedal is great, but I can't afford to invest that much right now. I'll check out the Wampler and I have a Nova Drive, I guess I didn't think it would work well with it....I'll give that another shot. I mean at times the 'thick' mode on the Vox NT is almost Marshall like...but not quite........

Anymore thoughts would be great! Thanks!

I tried my BJF HBOD last night and it was working really well with the NT.....I want an Emerald Green...but they are so hard to find and so pricey......

Any other thoughts?

Try the full range boost setting on a treble booster, like a Beano or a Germania.

I'm getting there, but actually trying it in the Bright Mode a bit broken up and then using a Honeybee and or a Hotcake to kick it into ripping Vox tone and using my volume on the guitar to clean up....working well....I have Diaz treble booster coming tomorrow and have a Emerald Green on the line.....GAS is a terrible thing to waste....hell my pedal board is worth more than my amp!

If you want Marshally OD, the Jetter GSP is very Marshally, but not over the top on mids like some pedals...still has a sweet spot
