Music is in the style of HUM, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins...

An engineer is kinda' like a lawyer in the sense that, don't you want the best one you can find? Why on earth would you want to find mediocrity?

Did I missing something? Where did the OP say he wanted mediocrity? I see him asking for a "good affordable engineer" and nowhere did I see him asking for mediocrity.
I don't know where he resides now since Water Front Studios moved to France w/ Lenny Kravitz, but Dave Batelene was great when we used him

James Mastro at the Guitar Bar in Hoboken (and Ian Hunter's guitarist, and all around great guy) has/had a studio maybe he can suggest someone.

Ken Seagall has some great credentials and again, maybe he can give you some leads.

"Our" own Mark Norwine may have some suggestions.

Wow! I feel honored.....
First: Bobmc....I see you're in Boonton! Where? I lived on Wilson St. for 10 years! I was in Boonton just today, getting my hair cut....
Studios: Well, my "preferred go-to guy" is Alan Douches at West-westside, but he isn't in NJ any more. He moved just a but upstate to New Windsor, NY. I haven't done much recording lately, but IMO, he's still "my guy"...

...and even if you don't use Alan for recording, I would strongly suggest he be considered for mastering. IMO, there's no one finer...
