Spring, Autumn and Winter and neck stickiness is not an issue, but during summer when my hands sweat like pigs, my R8 can be an act of frustration to use , how many times can you wipe a neck down !!:FM

I dont use polishes and I occasionally wipe down neck with naptha . Its very humid where I live during summer and ive taken to playing my R8 when seated and with a fan blowing behind me onto the neck area, so as to stave away sweat formation and the nitro turning very tacky on me.

There is no way id sand down a historic gibson myself , id leave it with a luthier i know and get it done by a pro . Can the sanding be done in such a way that the sticky top coat is removed and be buffed to a sheen once more and also be mirror smooth and cause no tackiness worries again . Id be distraught if the end result left me with a big baldy area on the back of the neck that cut the value of the guitar in half :worried:cry:

Can you guys advise me please, would I regret having the sanding job done ? Its a killer guitar, neck stickiness during summer is its only weakness.

I wouldn't do it. I have an '01 R8 and had stickiness when it was new. Of all things, Gibson guitar polish was recommended to me -- go figure. Even more go figure -- it works. I haven't had a problem or even thought of messing w/ the neck in years. Perhaps you have a different chemistry going there due to nitro cure, your pH, etc., but I'd try to find a good polish/cleaner first. Stelling Glide-coat (?) is also a good one, recommended by Terry McInturff for his finishes.

Good luck.

Please read this thread first before sanding down your neck. MicroMesh may be just what the doctor ordered.

Keep a fresh clean cotton towel (black of course) nearby during shows, maybe draped on a bar stool so it's handy. I've had to do this for summer shows with a nitro laquered Fender strat. It's no big deal.

+ 1. The Gibson spray bottle does wonders for unsticking things, strangely enough.

I went out today and bought a guitar stand . I made sure the rubber sections were covered so as not to touch the nitro :nono I will just have to make sure my kids and 1yr old ginger tomcat dont get too close for comfort. Even though its a 01 guitar, could I expect the fact it will be outta the case 24 hrs a day to be a contributing factor in hardening up the lacquer ?

Maybe, but don't let the sun hit it. Warped guitar necks are no fun.
