I kind of put this in with the Creed thread... Who really cares??? They were a bunch of ego maniacs and their music was NOT original by any means.

And neither is this thread! But it does have the "Breaking News" twist going for it.

There'll be another Oasis record. The brothers have been fighting on and off for years. I'll be crushed if they don't continue to make music though, they're my favorite band.

Agreed, I think they will eventually reconcile and do another album. It's really a shame those two can't get along and just continue to make awesome music.

Oasis is a great band.
Noel will more than likely make a solo album and then rejoin the band.
He is a gifted songwriter.
Noel has left the band, they have not broken up.

I don't know if Noel will be back, I guess Liam smashed one of Noel's guitar hopefully it isn't that nice 355, if it was what a waste...
Mental illness? Dysfunction rampant? These guys(the brothers) have always been basket cases with too much self esteem.

but lots of other bands do that sound better.
that would be a great reason for them to break up.

Liam might be the thickest (dumbest) clod I've ever seen. Has anyone seen that Britpop documentary from early 2000's? Its hysterical how stupid he is...

They need to get back together. Watching two brothers virtually fist fight on stage is REAL entertainment.
Actually I heard the real reason was because they would get into arguments and neither one could understand a word the other was saying on account of their accent.

Noel Gallagher explains why he quit Oasis

LONDON – Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher claims "verbal and violent intimidation" led to his decision to leave the "Britpop" band.
In a letter to fans posted to the band's Web site Saturday, Gallagher also apologizes for having to cancel European concerts.
The posting says "the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable." Gallagher offers no details about what the intimidation was, and doesn't specify who was responsible.
Gallagher also doesn't directly write about his brother Liam, the band's frontman, who he earlier said had forced his decision to quit. That statement said Gallagher couldn't work with Liam "a day longer."

sounds like liam cant grow up at 37ish. very strange timing after their well received album and huge world tour. just sold wembley stadium out 3 nights on the bounce and he's gone. noel has always been the one in charge and its pretty much his band, can liam be that bad!?

I like their recent album, sounds different for them. Kinda psychedelic. Derivative or not, Noel did know how to write a good chord progression

I think they're overrated. OK they have got a few good songs from albums up to Heathen Chemistry but I really don't see why they're so "great."
Besides, Blur are way better.

In my opinion the reason they had problems that led to their break up is each would not give the other any credit.
Noel thought all the success was due to his songwriting and Liam thought it was all because of his vocals and persona.
In reality it was both of them but each was too self-centered to see that.

I think they're great. They are one of the fewer 'newer' bands that has a larger than life presence that is actually caused by the members personalities and not constructed by some record label exec sitting in some office somewhere. Great songwriting fueled by flashpoint characters in a constant state of conflict. Besides, it's nice to see some boys from the wrong side of the tracks do so well! The great thing about bands like Oasis is that I am always noticing and trying to interpret an undercurrent in their songs while listening to what it is actually recorded. The background of the band strikes a 'chord' or vibe with me that is never actually vocalized or heard. Awesome.

i like them. and i can't name one original band, can you?
everyone we listen to was influenced by someone or something.
and if you've ever met big stars, the ALL have egos. some are a little more low key about it, but it's part of what makes them who they are.

I'm glad they have broken up. I saw Noel Gallagher on a show here in the UK a year or so after they broke through and he sang Wonderwall and Don't look back in Anger with just his acoustic as backing and he is a far better "singer" than his brother. I think as a solo act he will follow the path taken by one of his influences and also good friend Paul Weller. Liam was, is and always will be a complete tosser, jealous of his brothers talent which is probably at the root of all their troubles. He will eventually fade into obscurity like the nonentity he is when he realises that he isn't a pimple on John Lennons ass as far as musical talent goes.

The first two Oasis albums are fantastic, and they really define a whole genre/movement/period in the 1990s. I bet most Brits my age will have a lot of memories brought back by hearing something like Wonderwall.
Since then, though, they haven't really written anything of note. The odd song here and there, but nothing special. Plus, Liam is a prat. I quite like Noel though, and he has good taste in guitars ;)

What a spoiled selfish bastard.
Ironically, Noel walked out of an Oasis gig in Paris nine years ago, temporarily derailing a world tour in 2000. Last year, before the band launched a tour with Ryan Adams, Noel Gallagher told RS, "I am f-----g brilliant every night I go out there."

It's a shame, really. For all the piss and vinegar, a truly great band. Did they save rock and roll in the mid 90's? Maybe so. Would trade places with them in a second.
They were just hitting their stride with the new line-up including Zak Starkey, Gem Archer, and Andy Bell (huge Ride fan, here). Love the last two albums especially.
Oh well, the saga continues.

I don't care why they broke up, just as long as they have. A plague on them, their tasteless houses and their trophy wives. They set music back a decade in this country with their highly derivative, lowest-common-denominator, mutton dressed as lamb.
I can tell you as a guitar teacher that we had a whole generation of young guitarists who thought that because they could play 'Sunshine Supernova', the world owed them a career. A curse on Gallagher sr. with his hackneyed pentatonics, over/undebent clams and toneless, vibratoless plod. Never has such an impressive array of vintage instruments been made to sound so wretched.
I partly blame the press in this country for falling for this dreck and proclaiming these mediocre clowns as New Messiahs. A nation of impressionable teenage rebels looking for a clue believed it, and within five years the standard of musicianship in late-teenagers in the UK had sunk to depressing levels. Every generation throws up role models. With Oasis, things hit an all-time low. It was, ironically, Noel G's mate Paul Weller who sang "The public wants what the public gets".
Oh well - back to burgling your neighbours, eh Liam?

You know Dunara... I hope would hope to never send any kid of mine to a 'guitar teacher' like you. I wouldn't want them to learn any of your 'highbrow' playing, what with your absolutely perfect bends and your godlike command of scales... you see... i'd like my kid to learn to rock, and have fun and write great songs. It's interesting to see how far your stellar command of guitar has taken you. WOW! A guitar instructor! Holy moly! That's real close to other careers with well known practicioners, like accountants, but not as cool. Good job. Your diarrhea of the mouth was impressive.

On 30 August 2009, In a recent interview with Daily Mirror Peggy Gallagher, mother of Liam and Noel, told the newspaper, "I'm convinced the band will reunite because they do love each other very much, but they've always been very different. The funny thing is, they didn't fight as children. They didn't fight until they started the band... I hope this isn't the end of Oasis. I don't think it is. They're just tired at the end of the tour. They've had fights before and got over it.'
On 5 September 2009, Liam Gallagher told News of the World Oasis will continue despite Noel deciding to quit.
I'll take it-I'm a fan.
