I have been looking around for a new acoustic steel string. I have budgeted $1,500 - $2,000. I have checked out some Larivees and Taylor that I liked. I really like the playability of the Taylors but thought that the similarly priced Larivees may sound better. I have also heard good things about Seagull but have not checked those out yet.

Lot's of choices. I mainly play electric, and I bought my last Takamine years ago. Therefore this is all a bit new to me.

Any thoughts? I am mainly a picker vs. finger style.

There's a lot of good guitars in that range. True pro level stuff. Enjoy the search...Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Larivee, Breedlove, etc. etc.

I hate to say, but it's really a matter of taste. Find solace in the fact that least acoustics are a stand-alone thing (as opposed to the electric gutiar/amp interplay). Taking your time, it's usually not too hard to find the gems in the acoustic room.....

From San Francisco, take the trip down to Gryphon Strings in Palo Alto. Tell them what you want and they will spend the time helping you get exactly that. I bought my first high-end from them, and love it still. They can help you immensely.

I am primarily an electric guy, and recently bought my first acoustic. The other guitar player in my band quit, and he did all the acoustic stuff, so I needed a decent acoustic electric for band use.

I was looking in the same price range (up to $2k), and played a bunch of them. I ended up with a Breedlove Atlas C250EF. I liked it better than the Breedlove "Pro" versions, and any of the Taylors, Martins etc. I played in that range. It was also right about $1k.

May not be your cup of tea, but I absolutely love mine.....

I'd look for a used Santa Cruz in that range. I think they make the best sounding guitars between the 1500-3500 range used.
