A friend of mine has finished his third solo album of instrumental guitar music which I think is great music and it sounds great as well. Where would he go to sell that music? He wants a place where the music can be easily down loaded and where proceeds from the sale of the music is shared between the web site and the artist not where the artist ends up owing the distributor.

Has he contacted any of the labels that have an acoustic focus?

In my mind, they would help with marketing, distribution, and licensing.

CD Baby is great, though all of the promotion will be on him. Playing shows and doing YouTube videos will be good ways to drive sales.

Seems like iTunes lets any geek with 10 songs sell on there

This being connected to Facebook might be a good thing to get the word out. CDbaby charges no up front only commission which is nice.

guitar 9 is a great guitar based site, but i don't think they sell downloads, just physical CD's

Has anybody actually had any experience either selling or buying from any of these sites?

I sell my CD's on both of the places i mentioned, i've also bought from them, and i would highly recommend both.

I am kinda surprised but kinda not that so few people have had any experience selling their music. When my friends stuff is available I'll let you all know. There is some amazing talent out there going unheard. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I sell through CD Baby, which places it on iTunes, as well as a lot of other digital services (Rhapsody, iTunes UK, etc.). They also stock physical CDs. They pay promptly and their accounting is transparent.

As I said in my previous post, promotion will be on your friend. CDBaby aren't going to help promote his album, other than possibly making it one of their weekly (monthly?) features.

Personally, I find the promotion to be a burden. It takes a lot of time and often seems futile, especially when you are selling music that is less mainstream. If your buddy can find someone to help out in that department (like a label), then he'd be better off.
