Dumb question but here goes..

I'm currently using a 1x12 cab but I want to get a 2x12. If I have 2 8 ohm speakers will the total load be 4??? Can I wire it up to be an 8 ohm cab?

Hey,

You can either wire it as 4 ohm or 16 ohm cab. If you wire the elements in parallel it'd be 4 ohms and in case you wire them in series the cab would rate to 16 ohms.

Cheers,
Petri

How do you figure? Wiring a 16Ω in parallel with a 2Ω speaker won't get 9Ω.

Basic parallel math is (R1*R2)/(R1+R2)

(16*2)/(16+2)=32/18, which comes out at just under 2Ω (1.777 to be exact)

Plus, trying to use an extra speaker to make an impedance work out, and then to try and muffle it so you can't hear it seems like a lot of extra work for very little benefit.

I think I'll just go with 2 16 ohm speakers wired in parallel...that other idea is giving me a headache:jo (no offense to the poster!)

u can't get 2 8 ohm components to produce 8 ohms equivalent.

Yes, you are correct sir. I got confused with the #'s. Later today when I was golfing I was thinking about what I posted, and something didn't seem right. So when I got home a bit ago I remembered this link I had bookmarked recently :http://www.termpro.com/articles/spkrz.html and as I was finishing the calculation I was thinking "oh crap, I screwed this up. I bet the Satellite Amp guy is going to set me straight pretty quick like (no kidding, I really thought this)." I respect what you do, and appreciate your posts, I tend to follow them and make mental notes. So, I'm pretty embarrassed about my former post, and sorry to the OP for the misinformation. I should have a better grasp of something before I go posting. I will remove my original post because of the misinfo, but mostly because I'm embarrassed.... so I will endure 50 lashings as punishment and hide in shame... :hide

Michael - I have made quite a few blunders on this website, and been called on most of them. It happens. No harm, no foul. Just glad to be a part of the conversation and glad others are as well.

Thanks Adam. That's why I like this site. If there is misinformation going on - especially from a technical standpoint, there are a lot of knowledgeable folks here to set it straight, or to at least have a respectable debate about the subject. I don't post much in here, but this forum is the one I'm reading most on the site. So, I appreciate guys like you that are willing to share their knowledge/experiences. Thanks.
