View Full Version : Marshall 1960tv 4x12 Cab w/ Celestion Greenbacks

Somehow I don't think the Greenbacks are right for a 4x12 cab. When in clean the overall tone is just awesome with amazing tonal ambience with natural "boominess" that comes from the cab. HOWEVER, when in overdrive mode the boominess adds unnecessary and unwanted "reverb" effect as if a room has too much bounce for a lack of better word.
SO, as with my other thread I'd like to take all of them out and sell them or put them in a 2x12 cab.
W
hat would be the most versatile speaker replacement choices for this (no V30s)? Alan prefers EVs over others? 4 Celestion Golds?
I'm definitely not versed in speakers.

My Carol Ann Tucana asks what would be the most versatile speaker replacement choices for this (no V30s)? Alan prefers EVs over others? 4 Celestion Golds?
Did you try 1) moving the cab away from the wall 2) raising the cab off the floor a bit 3) reducing your bass on the amp? 4) putting the cab in a different room with a different flooring surface (eg hardwood vs carpeting)? Or any combination of the above?? These changes might help you troubleshoot things. You may not even need other speakers, could be room dynamics.
Or it is possible you may be struggling with the bassier tonal response of the extra tall tv cab? I know I did. The tv is a slant, so you turn up the bass knob on the amp to compensate for the treble and mids shooting at you, and then that particular cab's bass gets too boomy...etc.etc. Then when you back off the bass to kill the boominess, the mids stand out oddly and weakly like an am clock radio? I really liked but eventually sold my tv for this very reason, and have no problems getting a balanced sound with greenies or scummies in the standard straight marshall, bogner, etc 4x12 cabs. The tv ended my affair with slants, which can be tricky to dial in, especially as your environment changes from venue to venue. The extra tall tv can be even trickier in some venues and with some amps. Its whole purpose is to have more bass and a more focused low-midrange than a standard 1960a. It does so beautifully....but can be quite boomy regardless of your speaker choice. My tv also sounded oddly woofy with g12-65s.
I had this same problem again later with the extra tall, extra deep Mesa Recto 4x12 cab, a weird, too-boomy subsonic bass I wound up disliking with marshall-style amps. I learned that very nice extra tall cabs I really enjoyed, rather than the speakers in question, did not quite suit my playing needs and preferences. YMMV.

MGSchindel,
Thanks for sharing a very similar experience with this cab. You just saved me money, time and possible frustration from the boominess that may just be inherent in the cab!
OK - my decision is made. Thanks!

Be sure to move the cab around, though.
BTW, the modern "greenbacks" you are referring to in that reissue tv cab are only medium-magnet speakers (aka G12"M") with a 75hz cone (rolled-off bass below 75 hz), they are NOT the large magnet bassier g12H heavy duty speakers that come in the marshall handwired reissue cabs. As such, they don't even HAVE much actual bass response at all, mostly mid to upper midrange! Hence, much of the boom comes from the very handsome tv.
Some metal guys I know stick large magnet G12K100s in tv cabs and use 7 string guitars for some sick death metal tones, as the slanted tv cabs project better and sound punchier than the slightly muddy mesa recto cabs but still handle the 7 strings' low end very well.....That should tell you something...The tv cab can sound pretty twisted.
If you had the inclination and a Guitar Center nearby, you could try picking up, say, a marshall 425B or a marshall standard 1960BX floor model, bring it home to your environment, and run it alongside the slant TV for a "cab design" shootout, which would be quite revealing...if you were not shy about GC's return policy...Then you could be sure, and act accordingly to resolve your particular issue.

You could always try the Celestion G12T-75w speakers.

Unfortunately the mid-scooped G12T-75, which I like and use often, has much more and much punchier low end in the tv than the softer, blurrier, midrange-focused greenbacks ever will. I tried that and it made the low thud (aka marshall knock) even more dominant over the cab's warm, natual midrange tones, especially with palm muted chords or muted strings/notes, and the clean tones suffered a bit too. YMMV ; )

I did move my cab around. It has caster wheels on them - still boomy.
Choices:
1) Find a cheap, used 425B and put G12M in them;
2) Put 4 EVL 200W speakers (especially for my Carol-Ann); or
3) Just sell the 1960tv altogether!

I always thought Greenbacks wouldn't have enough bottom end, hence i was a V30 guy, however i find the 1978' Marshall JMP 2203 head & cab have the perfect blend, here's my cab of G12M Blackbacks.:drool
Forgive the playing it was 7am first take.

The 425A and B cabs have the greenback g12c's already loaded in 'em....they're they same speakers that Marshall used in the Hendrix cabs. I have an A cab, and don't find it boomy at all- just very warm and crunchy.
Rumor is that 425's are being discontinued, and some of the retailers (GC, Sam Ash) have been blowing them out. I saw a 425A at a local Sam Ash marked down to $599.

Yes the 425 is a great cab, the greenies in there (G12C)sound really good. Not boomy cabs at all, standard 1960A/B size too.

I might look to trade my 1960tv for a 2x12 w/ celestion golds if I could find one.
