What should I get? Find an old Blackface one? Or some clone? And can we keep it under $2k (used price)?
Or should I get something other than a Super (I want something BIG SOUNDING, that doesn't break up too soon, but DOES break up... and reverb isn't necessary)?
Don't mention an FTR37.
You can find BF under $2000. I'd get that.

This isn't mine and I have no affiliation with the seller, but someone in the eporium is currently selling a 74 SR that has been blackfaced for $900. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=602136

Are "Blackfaced" non-blackface Fenders really just as good?
Oh, and are the speakers the same as those in a real blackface?

I got a '69 silverface for $950. It's a great sounding in good shape. Original CTS speakers, changed grill cloth but otherwise seems original. Why get a copy or reissue when you can get the real deal. It sounds great.

Yep. Real Blackface Supers are going for well under $2,000 due to the market shift toward smaller amps. The difference between blackface and early silverface non-master volume amps is minimal. Play both, and if you find a silverface one you like, play it a while before deciding to blackface it; Many really sound great as is.
The later master volume silverface Supers were decent sounding too, but were significantly louder, higher-watt amps. Personally, I'd recommend pre-'71-'72, non-master-volume.
And find a good tech who can replace the filter caps and go through the amp performing some good preventative maintenance for a reasonable price. Avoid the cork sniffer types who see double dollar signs every time someone walks in the shop with a "vintage" amp.

Yeah, it looks like (from the completed listings search) they're going for closer to 1200.

What year do Silverfaces start?

What year do Silverfaces start?
1968. First year Silverfaces fell into several categories: Those that had changed very little outside of appearance, and for only a few months, those that changed so drastically that dealers couldn't sell them (and they were quickly changed back to near original spec).
The '68 amps can be ID'd by their aluminum drip edge around the speaker baffle.
Best to try any amp first, but also know this: A decent amp tech can put most of these amps right for usually under $200-$250. A corksniffer amp tech will rarely charge less than $350-$400.

I would seriously look at the Dr. Z EZG-50. If you are after a BF Super tone and you want an amp that sounds huge but still has tons of headroom available, you owe it to yourself to at least give this amp a try. Best amp I have ever owned, hands down.

This is all good advice.
