So, it occurred to me that some people may appreciate their guitars in ways other than as players, so have any of you ever bought a guitar not because you wanted to play it but because you considered it a work of art or maybe even as a historical artifact to be preserved? :munch

Nevah! All my geetars get played for something or another.......but that's just me. I love playing them.

By playing, I meant as a number one or backup. Playing it just for sake of hearing it once in a while wouldn't count in this instance, but it's primary function would be as art or history.
I did. Bought my Epi Gold top primarily to hang on the wall.

Nah, i don't have enough players yet to start that caper. They do make nice objects, though apparently not everyone is in agreement, i keep getting told to get those things out if the living room. Can you believe it? Best looking things in there.

I have done this. I bought a Slash flame top, one of 1600, with the intention of just letting it sit. Not sure it will ever attain any increased value. I'll probably give it another 5 years and then if the value on those hasn't risen I'll pull it out to play and then it will be like I have a new guitar :)

Yes. I have a rare and unusual (but not particularly valuable) bass that I bought more to own than to play. It lives safely in its case. Once every couple of years I'll check the tuning and play a little on it but then I wipe it down and put it away again. I've had it for ten years or so and probably haven't played it ten times.

My first guitar was a Teisco Del Ray. In the 10th grade, a vietnamese girl I was dating taught me a couple chords and gave it to me. In college I destroyed it during band practice after consuming too many Boones Farm wine coolers.
A couple of months ago I found a minty one just like I had, so I decided to take it home. I don't ever intend on playing it, but it makes me smile when I see it hanging in the man cave.

It's a good thing you don't play piano. Can you imagine being asked to get that out of the room?
Why are some musical instruments works of art and others clutter?:huh
"Honey, would you please get that damn piano out of the living room?"

I'd like to get a Black Les Paul Custom with gold hardware and hang it on my wall.
Seriously.

Tried that once.
Figured I'd flip it pretty quickly.
Then I played it and it never left.
Darn Telecasters.

If I found a really clean 70's f-series tele thinline in black sunburst I might buy it just to have.

I bought a Trussart Steelcaster tele to fiip it because I got such a great deal. I took it out of the case to check it out and it took all of 30 seconds to decide it was officially the greatest guitar I'd ever played. Now it's my number one.

Wouldn't it have been cheaper just to go out and gather some firewood?

I've never intended to own anything that I wouldn't play until I bought a 1950 Gibson L7C recently. I bought it to flip, as I got a smoking deal on it. I've always been an electric player and have never had anything like this one before. I'm almost afraid to play it, but I must admit that I have played it a few times and it plays like a dream and sounds amazing. I'd really like to keep it, but its just not something that suits my playing at all and I could buy 2 or 3 other pieces of gear that I will actually use for what I can sell it for.

I once bought a mustang with the intent to flip it. Made $600 on it at the height of Cobain mania.
Traded a LP Replica for a GVCG Tele that I never had the intention of playing (I don't dig Tele's), sold the Tele the week I got it...

Yes, I have some that are not really true players but rather collectors. For example an ESP Screaming Skull or certain Jacksons like Rhoads LTDs or a custom shop 007 Soloist which is irreplaceable because Jackson won't build these anymore. Others are more players. I keep them all in top condition but ones like the ESP Screaming Skull which has a fully painted fretboard with flames all the way up to the headstock are not going to get played so as to protect that painted finish. Its one of the most collectible ESPs, doesn't make sense to play it and devalue it with wear.

Have you priced seasoned firewood lately?! This is way more fun anyway!
Hey, I could good make use of some "Collectable ESP's" I'll betcha!

Bought a bunch of Squier 51s.
Modded them into decent players; then gave them to folks that've been nice to me since the Storm.

I've purchased two I never intended to play out. The first (shown below) was and still is a one-of-a-kind collectible and I never played it out, and I sold it. Seeing it on the wall was nice, but didn't do it for me.
The second was dead mint, new-in-the-case, but 30 years old when I bought it, and I intended to keep it pristine. But I just couldn't resist playing it and after I did, I knew I had to take it out to a gig, which soon followed. I may have knocked $1,000 off its resale value by gigging it, but I don't regret it at all. I play it still, every now and then (though it's not my number one).
First one, a 1975-ish Ibanez Artwood Twin double-neck guitar, once owned by Gerry Beckley of the band America:

The second, a 1976 Ibanez Rocket Roll Sr. (model 2387CT) bought from TGP Emporium, and known in Ibanez circles as the "Crazy Train V":

Like I needed to read that.
Now I know I can't die without owning one of those damn things :)

Bought a charcoal frost John Mayer strat and sold it making almost $1000.00 on the sale. The bad part was that it was probably the best playing guitar I've owned.
