I've never understood the many that don't "get" the doors. Jim Morrison was the greatest rock vocalist ever. The Doors had such a unique sound.
I think people really need to hear the Doors music live, with that organ sound at concert level. There really is nothing quite like it.
I truly love this band. And I love Morrison. And I love Robbie's guitar playing.

Jim Morrison was the greatest rock vocalist ever.
When sober.
Anyone here (besides me) honestly, truly, really believe that he did NOT die 7/3/71 in Paris?
He may be dead.....most likely is. But he didn't die that day. I don't believe it...never did. Too many weird details.

I saw the Doors at the Hampton Beach Casino (N.H.) in '67. The Casino was a large nightclub right on the beach with a large dance floor in front of the stage. I remember they sounded pretty much like their records.

When I was in elementary school, I got some money for my birthday and went to the record store. I bought 3 albums...The Doors "Hello I love you" Cream "Disraeli Grears" and Steppenwolf 1. Loved all three albums and became I huge Doors fan

I've heard good things about this video. A friend of mine texted me yesterday while watching it; unfortunately, I was at work :(
Gotta try and catch it this weekend

did you see Wayne's World II ? The part where Mike Myers tells Rip Taylor that Jim Morrison visited him in a dream.....and Taylor says "oh yeah...Jim Morrison....rock singer?....although he always struck me as more of being from the "lounge singer" milieu...."
I laughed my arse off at that one because I always thought Jim Morrison sang like a two-bit lounge singer....his primal screams aside.
I'm glad you believe he was the greatest rock singer ever though
different strokes
I never saw him live but a good friend of mine toured with The Doors with another band (which shall remain nameless) and I asked him about Morrison and was told he was falling down drunk virtually every gig they ever played together.

I think he died in Paris or in France around the date officially given and that it was a heroin overdose. And the OD coverup/whatever contributed to the weird details..
There was a tell-all piece in Rolling Stone a few years ago about the Exile On Mainstreet time for the Stones in France. Keith supposedly was copping his smack from a well known dealer to the stars who supplied many celebs/rich folks hanging there in 1971..
The author of the article - who was there- said Keith's dealer had the best heroin around and also sold Morrison the stuff he OD'd on. This makes much more sense to me than JM supposedly dying in a bathtub after 'too much wine.' The guy was a world class drinker/partier...
'The Doors' (first album) is a masterpiece.
imo, ymmv

...to get back away from all that People Magazine stuff; The Doors were a good live band.
I saw them three times: pre-fame on the Strip [subdued singer], during their heyday at my college gym [rowdy singer], and later in an auditorium in Orange County [off his nut frontman].
The band and show were great each time. I don't know how Manzarek can keep that left hand going and still solo like he does. Good drumming too.

He allegedly didn't just die in the bathtub ... he had heart failure due to a weakened heart from years of drug abuse.

I read a biography (not sure which one) which said that the heroin dealer who supposedly dealt Morrison his deadly dose also gave Janis Joplin her dose that killed as well. The dealer was supposed to have been a friend of Pamela Morrison I think.

Back to the music, they were an incredibly tight band at first. That first album was recorded in just a few sessions.
When they were on, they were really ON.

I thought his comments about a singer or spoken word performer with tape loops or machines being the next wave of American music during the interview segment was quite prescient.

:agreeI'm not that into the Jim Morrison the rockstar and the 'still alive' stuff...it's just been written about so much over the years that it's hard to ignore - and after awhile, a bit fascinating I guess. And he was one hell of a rockstar. I don't think anyone's done the 'rather burn out than fade away thing' better than him- and he was the first, working with no roadmap..
But Back To The Music, their first album is genius good. Completely orgiinal sound. No one before or since has sounded remotely like the Doors (though some singers have tried to rip off Jim's act).
Producer Paul Rothchild just had to figure out how to get it onto tape, which he did fairly quickly. When I listen back to that first album..and parts of the second, its sorta lightning in a bottle stuff.
They had their difficulties in the studio later on, but got back on course (an updated course) on their last album, LA Woman and it was another masterpiece- maybe not every song like on The Doors, but several tunes..
Jim definitely left us wanting more.

I saw the Doors once in '67 (on the same bill with Janis Ian, Richie Havens, The Chambers Bros, Santana, and the Blues Project). they were a GREAT live band!

He was a crooner but come on, when was the last time Joe lounge lizard sang "Roadhouse Blues" "LA Woman" or "Love Me Two Times." Yes he did croon the ballads in particular, to great effect IMO. Said his main influences were Elvis and Sinatra.
I think he carried a song like few others in the way that he would dramatically build a tune perfectly, like going into a solo and then later build it up to the crescendo. Great singer, band, and material. I look forward to seeing the DVD because it is a myth that Jim was always wasted though for sure he had a serious problem and at the end I think it was the rule. Manzarek brings this up in his book. He said Jim could go though fairly long straight periods, as evidenced by their highly professional body of work in a very short time. Their TV apearances were usually excellent with Jim in top form. But I'm not denying Jim was often "faced" on stage. The other thing, blown out of proportion, that sometimes hurts their reputation is Manzarek's dorky organ sound but in reality it was the exception and quite rare by the last several recordings. And sometimes it was cool. It's not like there was a lot to choose from, especially live in those days. Anyway, one thing I think we can all agree on. They don't make them like Jim anymore.

My opinion, I think the Doors are one of the handful of bands who shaped rock music. To me they are one of the giants.
