I got one of the "The String Cleaner" because the guitar mags said it worked well. It does not, I have been using it for a few weeks on very dirty strings and the pads still look new with hardly anything on them. But, if I take a rag and clean the strings like I have been doing for many years, there's the dirt on the rag, which is also a microfiber rag. You can feel the dirt on the strings. This thing is just cheap plastic and microfiber cloth glued into it. When you slide it over the strings it does not have enough grab to clean the strings unless you pinch it closed with some pressure. For $12.99 it's a total rip off, I would really have a hard time paying more then $2.00 for it.

the guitar mags said it worked well.
There is a thread where a pedal manufacturer mentions the fact that they were encouraged to purchase advertising from guitar magazines in order to get a product review. The reviews published in those rags is valueless.

Hmmm... that's interesting. I have been using one a couple months with great results. I find it especially useful at cleaning the bottom of the strings where I can't normally get with Fast Fret. I have noticed a significant reduction in build up, and the pads get quite filthy after several uses. Maybe mine is broken, LOL.

A chamois leather is the best thing I've found for cleaning strings.

I use those ernie ball string cleaning wipes. they work great and as advertised.
On a fresh set of strings I'm extending the life quite a bit.
It has some sort of cleaner on it.
