I have one more NOS 12AX7 tube left after I went thru 4 tubes in 2 years. Can I interchange the above tubes in V1 and V2 in my Mazerati? What can I expect interchanging tubes? I tend to go for NOS RCA tubes,They have a more reasonable price and I like their sound more than Mullards and Telefunkins.

You can interchange those tubes, but they're both lower gain tubes than a 12AX7.

yes. you can read on the dr z forum for very detailed information about how those tubes effect your tone in V1 and V2.

Yes you can interchange but I would not recommend it, not because it is not safe, but because you will drop the gain on your amp quite a bit.

It is easiest to think of this way;

on a scale of 0-100 the gain looks like this:

12ax7=100
5751=70
12at7= approx 40
12au7=20

BTW, in the Dr.Z forum, the Doc states that the best sounding guitar amp pre-amp tube hands down is the pre-war Yugo made 12ax7.

When you say pre-war. do you mean pre WWII? Because I'd imagine that those would be nearly impossible to find.

Im a HUGE fan of NOS glass and while by no means an expert, in 35 years of tube swapping in either guitar amps or audio, I loved the Ei. I think anything that now comes out of the reflector /saratov plants are absolute garbage. I would never put any of these russian pieces of crap in anything I own. Not a cork sniffing statement but just my opinion. Soemtimes I tink Mike Matthews had something to do with the ar that destroyed the factory! just kidding.

No I mean prior to 1989, this is when they they started having problems there and also when EI chnaged the construction of the tubes.

Seems to me there was some information about the EI factory in Serbia in Neds' dusty files over at Triode. Very interesting-the tooling and materials were pretty much all German.

Other cool stuff.

12at7= approx 40Actually the AT should be closer to 60. You must be thinking about the AZ that's at 44.

Has anyone else been pleasantly suprised by 7025's in place of 12ax7's?

The verb is less cheesy. Very quiet, great gain!

This WW2 solid State rectifier boosted the hell out of my volume and tightened the lows. I am changing my filter caps to handle the voltage. It really helped in combination with removing the channel 1 pre amp tube, using a 7025 for the verb and channel 2. I still have a cheesy 12at7 for #3. All my 5u4's tend to be "farty".

I admit I've heard some beautiful new fenders that are hopeless. Out of the early ones (my favorite is an early CBS) One out of every 20 Deluxes (with well informed TLC) can't be beat, in my opinion.
