View Full Version : JCM800 - Pulling input plug the same as standby?

This may be common knowledge, but all I got in searching is a bunch of threads gushing about how much they like their amp...

Is pulling the plug out of the input (high or low) the same as putting the amp in standby?

It goes quiet just the same, so I'm curious to see if there's a distinction between the two.

3400 posts here and you don't know the answer? Just in case this isn't a trick question...no it's not the same as putting it on standby.

That is so helpful: Thank you.

The fact that there are so many jcm800 related posts around here is what made it a bit hard to find particular results for.

The fact that I have just about the same amount in posts through my username here gives me the perspective that whenever I see a post asking a question that I believe has many other posts relating to it, I usually - give a pointer to a thread I can easily find because I know a bit more about it than the poster - this gives the poster an opportunity to read and learn just as much.

I may also add terms that the poster may not be familiar with so they may be able to search for it and also so that people searching in the future will have that thread as a reference to find things more effectively.

...or, you can just do what you did right there.

no
standby keeps high voltage of the plates and just puts it on the heaters

No need to jump on anyone for asking a question.
cugel is right but in more detail:

In standby, the tubes are lit, ready to go, but no high voltage is applied to them.
When you pull the input jack, the amp is still fully operating.. and depending on the circuit type, and the idle bias setting, can be anywhere from 50% to 100% of the strain of full power.

I should also add that long periods in standby (many hours) are not good for tube life either.

Thanks for the info.
That is the distinction I was looking for.

I don't know the answer to your question, but... A useful tip to search TGP is...

Don't use the Search function. Instead, go to google and type site:thegearpage.net "whatever you want to search for". You'll get useful hits that way, plus you can search for multiple terms, something TGP's Search function doesn't like.

Hope that helped...
