Gene Simmons looks so much better in KIss makeup. I saw a commercial for his reality show and saw him without it, it was so disturbing I didn't watch TV for a week.

I haven't tried FocalPoint, but I'm curious. That picture was taken with a Nikon 85mm pc-e tilt shift lens that I rented. It was set at full down tilt.

Very cool. What filter(s) and settings did you use for the B&W conversion?

Took this with my iPhone and the “Hipstamatic” app and camera settings were Lens:Hornbecker…Film:BlacKeys SuperGrain…Flash:None…so it was shot with a black and white setting. Most Hipstamatic films and lenses give you an old aged look but the two I chose are among the more normal of what they offer. Finished it up with additional photo processing in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, mainly for shadow/highlight and contrast adjustments.

I'm not what anyone would consider "experienced" but I have a D7000. It's a mighty fine camera.

I don't have that particular lens, but I have a my kit lens (18-105), 50mm 1.8 prime, 70-200 f2.8 VR, 150mm Sigma macro, and a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and I've taken some great pics with it.

For me it's a perfect balance of speed (6fps), ISO performance, size/weight and IQ.

If it's your first DSLR, there's a lot to learn. You might want to pick up this book (http://www.amazon.com/Mastering-Nikon-D7000-Darrell-Young/dp/1933952806). He does a pretty good job of explaining everything.

Also if you're looking for a battery grip I've heard very good things about this (http://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Vertical-Battery-Digital-EN-EL15/dp/B0050F2Z4Y/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1336954583&sr=1-1-catcorr). It's cheap enough and I heard it works very well. It's next on my list!

Thanks for the reply, wahfreak. I have some experience with DSLR cams, having used a Nikon D60 at work for a number of years, but I've been meaning to get one of my own for some time now. I'll see if there are any photo classes available locally, as I learn better by watching how others do it in a practical situation.

Glad you liked it, it's pretty cool to see in person and quite large. It is called the Astronomers Monument and it is at the entrance to Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. This is another picture I took that day where you can see how large it is.

Greeting visitors upon their arrival at Griffith Observatory, the fully restored Astronomers Monument is a large outdoor concrete sculpture on the front lawn that pays homage to six of the greatest astronomers of all time:

- Hipparchus (about 150 B.C.)
- Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
- Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
- Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
- Isaac Newton (1642-1727)
- William Herschel (1738-1822)

The monument is an enduring product of the great economic depression of the 1930s, when New Deal initiatives created federally funded work programs to employ skilled workers in many fields at a time when they would otherwise remain idle and without income. One of the first of these programs, the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP), began in December 1933. Soon thereafter, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Park Commission, PWAP commissioned a sculpture project on the grounds of the new Observatory (which was under construction). Using a design by local artist Archibald Garner and materials donated by the Women's' Auxiliary of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Garner and five other artists sculpted and cast the concrete monument and figures. Each artist was responsible for sculpting one astronomer; one of the artists, George Stanley, was also the creator of the famous "Oscar" statuette.

On November 25, 1934 (about six months prior to the opening of the Observatory), a celebration took place to mark completion of the Astronomers Monument, which had proven to be the most ambitious creation of the PWAP. The only "signature" on the Astronomers Monument is "PWAP 1934" referring to the federal agency which funded the project and the year it was completed.

. . . no electronic connection with the camera so manual f/stop as well as focusing, some purple fringing, my heaviest lens, harder to focus by eye, but definitely my favorite to use (nice long pull focus).
Add a tilt adapter and an extension tube, and you can get pretty close up.

Absolutely fascinating. I have seen many public works projects from the era you are talking about, but I didn't know there was an "art works" segment. Awesome sculpture for sure.
