My dad who played harmonica
took me when I was 13 to see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.
I could not believe a guy could sing, play, whoop and holler and
find the breath to do it all so seamlessly all at the same time.
I was absolutely gobsmacked and have never forgotten that night.
It's a precious memory. RIP dad.

1979, Rush, Hemispheres Tour, RKO Orpheum Theater, Davenport, Iowa.
I was 14, the ticket cost $7 with a 50 cent service charge. I bought a Hemispheres Tour shirt that I wore until it was as thin as tissue paper. It's still in my dresser, in the "old, older, and oldest" concert swag drawer.
The air was thick with pot smoke, and Rush was awesome. Geddy told us they had a couple new ones for us, two songs they hadn't really played yet live ... "The Spirit of Radio" and "Free Will." I remember thinking they were cool, but wondering where my favorite band was going with the musical direction.
I don't remember a ton from that time period, but I remember that show.

AC/DC Back in Black tour. I was 15 years old. Sept 5th 1980 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco CA. I only know the date because I found it on line.
My sons first concert was Kiss on Alive 35 tour in Oakland. He was 7 yrs old (and yes he has earplugs as he plays drums). I wanted him to see a major spectacle of a show and they delivered.
1968 or 69
Spirit with Nazz opening at the State Fair Music Hall in Dallas
"I Got a Line on You" was just released. Randy California was great. I was 16 or so at the time and he was only a year or so older than me. I thought, "He and I are about the same age, maybe I should give the guitar a try." 40+ years later I'm still tryin' and still not close but having fun anyway.

I was 13, it was '66 and the band was Paul Revere & The Raiders. It was mindblowing. They played hit after hit. The girls were out of control, the lead singer had a ponytail and the guitar player played behind his back/head and with his teeth. This made quite the impression on me att.

Styx Paradise Theater tour if that counts as a rock concert. Not quite sure what year it was. They had no opening act and they were late because of plane issues getting into town. To placate the crowd, they announced that you could turn your ticket stub in for a free record at one of the local malls the following week. The bad news is that the free albums were cut outs and mine was warped as hell. Classy...

Beach Boys, coastal Maine, 1988. Simply remarkable show.
Opening act : Roy Orbison. At the time, I was too young (8 years old) to understand Orbison, I thought he was boring. I still remember how cool he looked on stage though. Of course, now, I'm an Orbison fanatic, and glad to have seen him.

first was either paul revere and the raiders in the mid-80s at the DC car show or a concert put on by the smithsonian institute called Night of American Guitars and featured sets by john cephas playing piedmont blues, jerry douglas playing dobro, ricky henderson flatpicking, someone playing hawiian slack key guitar, tal farlow playing jazz and albert lee giving us the rockabilly to close out the night. i forget the exact date, but it was the same night the mtv unplugged with srv and satriani originally aired. got to watch the vhs of the when i got home, so it was certainly the most guitar oriented day i'd ever had up to that point.
first club gig i ever saw was some local punk band at the old 930 club, but the first arena show was the jeff beck/srv tour in 89.

At the end of the show, EC tossed his lighter out in the crowd. Tons of people scrambled, I looked down and saw it right by my foot, so I nonchalantly placed my foot over it and retrieved it after the coast was clear. It was a white disposable, made in Holland....
Within a few days, I made my first bad decision (first of many!) using bad judgement, because of a woman - I gave the lighter to the Swedish exchange student I had a crush on!
I think 1993. Smokey Robinson/Willie Nelson at the local fair.

The Beach Boys w/ The Grass Roots opening - my uncle was the Boys road mgr. at the time, and they were still wearing those black and white striped shirts.
About 4-5 years later, The Grass Roots taped a little jam "show" in Steve Still's and Neil Young's beach house down the street from us. I was there, but to this day I have absolutely no idea what ever became of it. They were actually a pretty good little band...

We live in Hawaii and a lot of the artists I'd like to see don't make it out our way. So when I was in NYC in '08 I made sure to see the RTF reunion tour at the Palace Theater in Harlem. Unbelievable show. Al Di Meola, Chick, Stan Clarke, and Lenny White. Al was playing the Fuchs/Mesa rig and I could hear the stage volume from the balcony! But even more to the point, Chick was distorting the FOH with his rig. I though I'd see Bill Connors but no dice. Kareem Abdul Jabar came out and introduced the band after the intermission. Stan blew out the drivers in his UPRIGHT rig. Amazing show that Chick played for the home crowd.

it was either 97 or 98 I was 12 and went to see John mayer at a Lagrange College Gymnasium in GA for 5 bucks, it was packed, and no more than 3 or 4 months later he blew the f*** up! Many more interesting concerts after that, but it was cool to see him in that environment and see where he is now, it was much different...

wow man... this thread is chock full of some great stuff. i'm going to have to go back and read it more thoroughly. my first year or two of concert-going was pretty epic:
i was 12 years old, and for my birthday my mom took me and my two best friends to see The Police (Synchronicity Tour) at the Omni in Atlanta. the opening act was The Fixx.
it ended up being one of the two concerts they filmed for the live video that came out a year or two later. i used to watch it over and over to see if i could spot myself!
my 2nd concert was with the same two friends a few months later.. Adam Ant at the Atlanta Civic Center, with opening act The Romantics.
1985 i saw Prince's Purple Rain Tour (Sheila E. opened)...and U2's Unforgettable Fire Tour (The Alarm opened)... it was the first US concert that Bono's dad had ever attended.
Ozzy Osbourne, 1981. Was 16 years old. Saw Black Sabbath a few months later.

Ozzy and Motley Crue on their Bark At The Moon/Shout At The Devil Tour. I was in 9th grade (14) and got to tag along with my older brother and his friends. The funniest part was my parents would never let us see Ozzy so we told them Van Halen. Dum-dum us never thought about the next day when my high school teaching dad would be surrounded by students wearing Ozzy t-shirts. I remember falling asleep on the couch once I was home from school only to be awaken by my dad who was inches away from my face yelling at me at 11 on the volume dial. We weren't too bright...

It was 1971. I was 12 and had a front row seat for The Carpenters at the Civic Center in Oklahoma City. Mac Davis was the opener.
I still remember at the end of Davis' set when everyone was standing and applauding... he smiled and looked out at the audience and said, "Gosh, y'all, thank you so much... I ain't never gotten a standing orgasm before."
I didn't fully understand it, but I knew it was something vaguely naughty.

The TAMI show at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964. I was ten years old and went with my mother who got tickets for me and a few friends. Saw the Rolling STones, The Beach Boys, Smokey Robinson, James Brown, The Supremes, Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, and many more. The show was made into a movie but it's rarely shown because the girls in the audience were screaming too loud. It was the start of a great concert going career that is still going strong.

The first concert I went to after the TAMI without parental supervision was in '69 when I saw the Grateful Dead at the Hollywood Palladium. It was a life changing experience and I ended up seeing more than 200 shows when Garcia died. I really miss the music and the ritual.

At the end of the show Cinderella played shelter and strippers came out and danced to it. I was 11 years old, and started learning to play guitar shortly thereafter. I don't think it scarred me too bad as I pay my taxes, go to work everyday, etc.

I remember seeing Joan Baez and the Grateful Dead out at Frost Amphitheater at Stanford University around '66. Not really sure of the date.
Also saw this show in July 67:
The Chambers Brothers—whose hit "Time Has Come Today" became a classic from the era—and Quicksilver Messenger Service. Opening acts included two little-known groups, the Santana Blues Band (yes, that Santana) and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Santana had yet to record an album and CCR had released their first LP weeks earlier. I actually got there late and missed most of CCR :>(

I was 15, Guns N Roses, Use Your Illusion tour at the Summit in Houston. My father got me two tickets in pretty good seats for Christmas. He said to give the other ticket to someone who could provide a ride home--he would do the drop off. My dad dropped us off at 7:00 pm, we hung out and caught Soundgarden as the opening act (barely payed attention, I had never heard of them at the time LOL). My friend tells me his dad is picking us up at midnight sharp out front. Of course GNR didn't go on until 11:20 pm and we only caught about 30 minutes of the show. :( I should have found someone with their own car.

1976, 16 yrs old, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Bos Scags opening, Shaeffer Stadium outside of Boston. Me and my best buddy at the time found our "seats" (concrete slab) 3 rows down from the top of the bleachers. Not long after we sat down, two girls, one obviously very drunk, the other trying to hold it together sat down in the row behind us. Next thing I remember the drunk gal was chucking dinner...whole, un-chewed hot dogs, 1, 2,3...like little torpedoes. Nick and I helped her friend carry about 160 lbs of barely conscious friend down about 1000 concrete steps, and over to the nearest ladies restroom.
Meanwhile, Bos Scags had finished up and FWM (or did the Eagles go first, anyone else there?) were taking the stage. About halfway through that set, my sinuses slammed shut and my face turned red from blowing my nose. At intermission, they turned the stadium lights on, whereupon the cause of my misery was revealed to be a giant MJ inversion layer that had settled inside the stadium (allergies, who needs 'em). At one point, another girl seated a couple spaces down leaned over and asked Nick "is he going to blow his brains out" but I overheard and quipped back "yeah, and if you're not careful, you might catch a piece of my mind."
As the saying goes "we didn't have much fun, but we sure had a good time..." :BluesBros

My first rock concert was when I was about 13 or 14(1956/'57). My parents bought my brother and I tickets to go see Ricky Nelson---since we saw him every week on, "Ozzie & Harriet"(with my hometown boy, James Burton, backing him up), they considered his brand of rock & roll, "wholesome". We enjoyed the show a lot! Little did we know what was coming around the bend---lol!!!
I was eleven and saw Dylan.

I was around the age of 12, my dad took me to see Creed (wouldn't have been my first choice, but at the time I didn't know any better). But I've wanted to be in a band and make music ever since.

Age: about 15
When: about 1987
Who: Johnny Clegg & Savuka
Body Count/Metallica/Guns n' Roses Oakland Sept '92.
One of my biggest musical regrets/missed opportunities is not obeying the 'rents and staying for the entire GnR set. Leaving after Metallica was the compromise as it was a school night. I thought my lungs were going to collapse during Body Count and Metallica was completely awesome but the one vivid memory I have from the entire concert (aside from being picked up and thrown repeatedly in the mosh pits because I was too stupid to realize a 94lb freshman should probably not be where I was) was watching Axl running across the stage while Slash busted into "Welcome to the Jungle" as my friends and I found our way towards the exit.

I was 8 yrs old, my dad (he's "Rock & Roll Gypsy" here on TGP) took me to see Mountain w/ ZZ Top opening........it was ZZ's Fandango tour.
Kind of ironic, though I had no inkcling at the time I would even wind-up playing guitar, that The Reverend Billy G and Leslie West would end up being 2 of my top 5 fav guitar players.

First rock concert was Rick Springfield - Working Class Dog?, Quarterflash opened - 1982/3.
(Saw the Osmonds a year or two before but not counting that.)
I was standing to the right of the stage and everytime Rick came over the girl standing behing my left shoulder would scream her head off in my ear. I didn't get it, but I did like the show.

I was about 7 or 8. Heck, it may already be posted in this thread. Which made it about 1975. My two biggest heroes at taht age were Arthur Fonzerelli (The Fonze), and Bowzer from Sha-na-na. They came to our small venue in Merrillville Indiana called the Holiday Star Theater (This was long before companies paid to have their names slathered all over venues), and my parents took me. I was thrilled, and still remember it a little.
The second was Molly Hatchet & Blackfoot at the same place.
But, my first REAL concert was Deep Purple, Perfect Strangers tour! I'm not sure why but the opener was Guiffria. So, I got to see Craig Goldie before he joined Dio. Lucky me!

In the early 70's I saw ZZ-Top at age 14 (I think).
That's when the Rev and Company wore Jeans, T-Shirts, Denim Shirts, and only looked like they hadn't shaved for a few days.
Also no 2-Stepping nor Fuzzy Guitars, and Billy played Pearly the entire night.
Also was the first time I saw anyone shooting up when I went to the bathroom of the coliseum.....

Bon Jovi in their Keep The Faith tour sometime in 1991 in Heredia, Costa Rica. I was 12 or 13.
I hate Bon Jovi, even back then, but at that time we didn't get ANY shows at all, so it seemed like an unmissable opportunity to see an international touring band.

First concert: The summer of 1967, at Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) I saw The Lovin' Spoonful with Spanky and Our Gang as the opening act. I was 9, my mom and dad brought my two sisters (both older) and myself. We sat out on the big sloping lawn, ate Kentucky Fried Chicken...it seemed magical to me.

David Bowie's Heroes tour. My dad got tickets and my mom didn't want to go, so I did. Think Robert Fripp was in the band, and I came to love Fripp and King Crimson pretty soon thereafter.

The Beach Boys. '65 or '66, I was 12 and my uncle was their road mgr. It was at some big hall w/ a revolving stage - some boxing arena in L.A. somewhere - famous place but I'll be damned if I can remember the name of the place.
They were still wearing the b&w striped shirts...
