I am thinking of adding a flanger to my board and have narrowed it down to three: mxr m117, evh117, and hbe Frostbite.
Is there any sonic difference between the standard mxr and the evh? The Eddie preset is not really important.
I like the sound of the Frostbite and am sure it is better constructed, but I am used to the standard control names. Which knob acts as the regen knob? The other cons (to me) on the Frostbite are the size (not a huge concern since I haven't started building my new board yet), and how easy it is to adjust the knobs with my feet as a flanger is a pedal I would use more than one setting on.
I ruled out the Electric Mistress, because of the more limited controls.

I would go with the regular MXR 117. The Frostbite was alright but the knob layout was seemingly nonsensical with a volume knob 1/2" from the footswitch and you'll have to use the huge wallwart as it is wired for center positive.

even better go with an original MXR 117 flanger.
analog heaven.

I hear the BYOC design is pretty stellar.

What is the BYOC?

What are the differences between the original and the new one? (aside from the in/out jacks and power cord)

yeah this seemed really strange but i think the 'volume' knob is actually the 'threshold' that the A/DA flanger had, rather than the knob labelled 'threshold' on the HBE which is actually for the noise gate.
if this is true - it's not quite so bad. but still it's a really stupid layout.

The Enhance knob is for Regeneration...

I went through the whole Flanger mess recently... ended up just hanging onto my Boss BF-2. That thing rules!

The volume is a master volume added to the end of the circuit. The threshhold is the same threshold from the original ADA. HBE used the same layout from one of the A/DA issues and dropped an MN3007 retrofit in place of the SAD1024 which is one of the tricks that was done at diystompboxes.com to make ADA clones easier to build.

BTW, I have an old DOD 670 flanger. How does the mxr m-117 compare to that one?

The hartman has the same limitation control wise as the EM, that's why I didn't have it in the running. A flanger is something I will use 2 or 3 different settings on so I need more control.

The BYOC is a kit that mixes elements from the A/DA and the MXR m117. Its got stereo outputs, normal (m117) and differential (A/DA) modes, Speed, Depth, Regeneration and Manual (for filter matrix type sounds). I can build you one if you're interested, please PM me.
