View Full Version : I deleted 8 threads on the first 4 pages of the Pub
Brian Scherzer

Before anyone starts asking, "What happened to xxxx thread?", I thought I'd let you know that I deleted 8 threads from the first 4 pages of the Pub. I didn't give warnings or infractions. I simply decided that those threads either go too far, are too silly, or just don't fit with what I think TGP stands for. I don't want to take away from your fun, but there is a limit to how ridiculous threads can be before I or someone else on the admin/mod team decide that enough is enough. There are truly other forums out there that expect less maturity than we do. When we let stuff go for a while it just leads to more of the same. If you want to blame someone for being heavy-handed, blame me. It was my decision.

I'm a user of Harmony Central's For Sale Forum, and I get disgusted with the bashing that goes on over there - so much so that it makes me think twice about visiting the site. The "bravery by anonymity" prevails... foul language, immaturity, bold and direct insults... not a comfortable place to be.
I don't know which threads here were deleted, and I don't care really. You gotta do what you gotta do for the "society" in general - the common good. I'll keep returning to TGP. It's cozy over here.
Certain things we are better off not knowing right? I trust my government or whoever to make those decisions for me. I know this ain't a public forum. Just sayin'.

Not knowing which threads weren't kosher isn't very helpful. What is "over the line" and what isn't? It is up to the subjective judgement of the owners of TGP and we're not mind readers. A list of the threads (or better yet, a link to locked versions of them) would make a big difference - giving a sense of how far out to go.

What bugs me are all the cute and clever copycat threads. If someone thinks they have a clever twist, why not just post it on the original thread?. It's a pain wading through 10 different threads about having sex with your toaster on your coworkers lunch break. I don't care how hot you think your toaster is. I'm looking for some interesting financial or home remodeling thread. Maybe something about an interesting car or news item.

Being a member of the original PRS Forum (those were the days), I remember when the guys kicked off The Gear Page here and I thought to myself.. "it'll never catch on... or, it's only for gearheads who care more about the brand of amp than actually 'playing' the amp..." (seriously! That's what some of us thought!)
Now it's my main hangout and I was thinking just the other day "my... how far we've come" - and then also thinking "or have we?"

+1000. It amazes me how many people look at the title...go into the thread...only to start something or complain about what you wrote...if you didn't like the thread why bother?
It's funny, you see all this bitching about a "certain type" of thread and demands being made that people take the "higher ground', but if you look closely, you will see dozens of positive and truly interesting threads every day that get little to no response. Not even from the biggest complainers who claim they are looking for more positive and interesting stuff.
The so-called obnoxious and off-color threads often go for many pages.
If you don't like the topics in the Pub, how about starting your own fascinating, upbeat and positive threads and see how that goes instead of complaining about threads you don't like that no one is forcing you to read.

Thats the problem with censorship these arbitors of good taste decide what prurient interests are worthy of discussion and which ones are not. Instead of democratic persuasion like HC follows we here rely on The Man to tell us what to discuss. In this case the best policy is to never start a thread of any type just in case.

Even a casual reading of the "Rules of TGP" will give you a very good idea of the limits here. (Scroll down and the link is in the lower left of your screen OR in the FAQ link above. We are not hiding the rules.).
There have been many posts from the admin and moderator teams about not posting sensationalist "national enquirer" types of threads.
What is appropriate and not isn't hard to understand with a few days of observing how things are here.
If there ever is a question, we are not hard to find and ask first.

The pub section has become very national inquireish lately.
It's good to get advice about off topic @ times, but some of these threads are pretty ridiculous.
We could get to back talking about gear full time, IMO. It's the gear page after all.
Talk about gear. Not David Letterman or Mackenzie Phillips.
We all get sucked into it. But it's really all a waste of time to talk about things like that. 5 days later we all start arguing about something else anyway and forget about it. But that's the internet for ya.

P.S. - When I worked for Baker-Hughes, I learned first-hand NEVER to go out drinking at out-of-town business conferences, etc., with a crowd that included folks that had a title like - um-m-m, say: "COO"; "Area Ops. Mgr."; "V.P. of Engineering"; "Pres."; etc., etc.
I have seen more than one guy let his alligator mouth overload his hummingbird ass - while "under the influence" - and end up talking sh#t that would, let's say.. aw, forget it...

The bottom line is that TGP is here ONLY because of the good graces of the guys that started it and maintain it — PERIOD. This place is THEIR creation, THEIR site, and they can do whatever they want to with it and they don't have to get our opinions about anything.
As cliché as it is, this is like someone's house. Just because "it's a free country," that doesn't give anyone the "right" to come in and act any way they want — the house rules rule.
Personally, I wish they'd do a bit more forced "house ejections" to get rid of some of the crap, but that's not my call.

I don't have a problem with the rules but what defines "silly"? And yes this is Brians house or polity and he is the ruler but that doesn't mean the body shouldn't have a say in anything.

See that wasn't silly but a clear violation of the rules. There was no need to do anything but lock that thread. Stupid threads die on thier own.

Totally disagree. Many a bad thread takes a life on their own; stupid threads go off until there is no saving them. The compulsion to flame other people on an Internet forum seems to burn very deep and very hot for far more folks than you'd imagine.
I'd invite you to start, run and moderate your own forum as you see fit. I would bet you a substantial chunk of change that after 6 months you'd have a FAR different opinion than you are exhibiting here. And I say that without a hint of sarcasm or condescension. Find me anyone that has owned, run or moderated even a moderately trafficked board that lets it run the way you seem to want things run and shares your opinion. And just to keep it apples to apples, let's remove all the deep pocked corporate sponsored and owned forums from the mix. Just independent and privately run forums.
Have at.
And your quote could just as easily be applied to you and your own opinions. Here's one to add to it, walk a mile in a man's shoes before you judge him.

Internet forums usually turn into dictatorships over time because stupid people have computers and no class!!
Scott owns this forum so its his rules. Like it or leave it because thats the reality of it all.. You can either whine like a bitch or man up and accept a few stupid threads being deleted.. In the big picture of it all not one deleted thread affects anyone in a negative way. Its an internet forum not real life!!!

"Men always love what they find good...it is in judging what is good that they go wrong"
That's a nice quote to carry around in your back pocket, but it's entirely hypocritical for you to use it. You've got almost 4,000 posts on a forum almost entirely devoted to discussing what is good, not so good, and flat-out lousy in the world of guitars and guitar equipment. And know, somehow, you're going to play the "I don't judge" card?? Please.

that quote refers to censorship and how threads die on thier own. Like others said some of the most popular threads are the ones deemed "silly". Give the people what they want lol If you guys are free to ask for threads deleted why can't I ask for them not to be?

yeah but ask by PM, it's the threads from other members trying to reel things in that gets people a little annoyed. There's 52,000 members here and 12 of them spend a lot of time trying to dictate what other people post about, they should do that through "proper channels."
52,000! Wow, I never realized that many were here now.
I remember Christmas 2002 we had a record online of about 250. Times have changes.

This is the thing that makes TGP more difficult. It was easy when we had 8000 members. I now have to actually shut the board down to do routine maintenance because it really slows the server down when there are 1000+ members online and I'm cleaning stuff out on the servers......and there are few times day or night that there aren't at least 1000 members online. If we don't enforce the boundaries of our rules new people joining have no idea what the rules are and the edges get pushed in further and further. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but I suspect that TGP keeps adding more and more members BECAUSE we expect a certain level of respect and maturity here.

+1000. It amazes me how many people look at the title...go into the thread...only to start something or complain about what you wrote...if you didn't like the thread why bother?
It was just one of the thread titles that did it to me. It was so vulgar as to clearly violate rule 2 of the terms. I don't really want to read titles like that here. This is a high class joint; let's keep it that way.
For the other people up-in-arms about "censorship" or some other non-applicable concept. TGP is not a public institution. It's owned and run by private individuals. Would you walk into someone's house and just start swearing up a blue storm or telling gross out blue jokes? C'mon, this is really about manners. You checked the box when you joined that you read the terms. You shouldn't have joined if you didn't want to follow their guidlines for content. It's really so simple.

If we wanted something like HC we'd be over there instead of here. I think you guys have done a great job allowing all of the freedom that anyone needs on a guitar gear site and as a result it's a wonderful place to hang out.
Thanks and congrats on an idea well conceived and a job well done.
