Ive been looking around for guitars with maple set necks but have rarely found one besides late 70s LP Customs.
Im planning on using a maple neck mahogany body combo for my next build and would like to know what builders around here think.
Im also going to be using an ebony board which I also rarely see on a maple neck.
So heres how its going to come out: 25.5" scale, mahogany body, maple cap, maple neck with ebony board ....Humbuckers.
Im hoping the mahogany body and maple neck will give me a real fat and cutting laser like sound.
Any suggestions to the contrary?

We use maple set necks on mahogany bodies on our Stepside guitars most of the time, and they sound great.

I build a couple of things with mahogany bodies and Maple set necks. Solid and hollow bodies.
Some of my favourite guitars indeed.
I think it could be an excellent choice for what you describe. Personally I wouldn`t use an Ebony board but you won`t know for sure until you build it.
What with the world of preset guitar specifications/expectations, it isn`t a terribly fashionable combination but I have found that a wealth of fabulous tones exist just outside the conventional limits.

What he said, though I like ebony boards.

I kind of have that albeit a rosewood fingerboard on my Hamer Talladega. It definitely cuts more like a Tele, but that also is the design and 25 & 1/2" scale as well!

I just received a Guilford guitar with similar specs and love it. Here's a link to pics.

The Ty Tabor model is fantastic. The quality, feel and tone is top shelf and the p-rails are awesome. All three settings sound "right". It makes for a really versatile guitar. It's a good pickup to go with on a custom build because you can have a three way toggle there from the beginning.

The Ibanez AR300s (DC LP style) from the early 80s are 3 ply maple necks. Interestingly, their semi-hollow sibling, the AS200s (335 style) are mahogany.

I made a late 70's Les Paul copy. Used a Korina body with a set through 1/4 sawn maple neck & ebony fretboard. It has great sustain. All other Les Pauls sound muffled to me.

I have a 81 Les Paul with the maple neck and it's the only one I've kept (it also has the flat body carve) hated by Les Paul lovers for its looks.
Luckily I buy guitars for their sound and this one has the thick chewy tone like Mick Taylor's from "Crusade". Totally solid neck/body joint too.
Best, Pete.

I love my spalted Huber with flamed eastern maple neck and board. Amazing tones out of this thing!
