I currently have a 1960 CS Relic that I love. I am looking to get a backup and was wondering what people recommend.

Roadworn - but play a bunch of them at the store because the QC is sometimes uneven.

depends on the specs. if you need the vintage thing, then yeah, the AVRI 57 or 62 used.
If you can handle a more modern interpretation, then either a current American Standard Strat, or a G & L Legacy.

My American Standard with 6100 fret wire and Fralin Blues pickups and blender pot...

Get a MIM or MIJ for a few hundred, slap some Fralin's or equivalent pups in it can call it close nuff. :o My backup is a MIM with Texas Specials. The stock pups more than suck.

I agree with the partscaster. Look for a high quality Warmoth, etc and ask some questions about the build quality and you should have a custom shop quality instrument for about $750 to $1000 (like I said, this is for a good one).
I built a Warmoth Strat with Fender Fat '50's and it easily as good as the AVRI stuff and better than some Custom Shops I've seen.
Plus I got to pick out all of the specs I wanted and got it in Sonic Blue, which as we all know makes for the best sounding Strat.

I also have 4 custom shop Fenders, & two roadworn,
One of roadworn is far Superior then other & it stands out with
custom shop & makes me wonder why did I burn all my money on custom stuff, Oh, well, I guess it is good for display & hoping will be a good guitar 401k portfolio.
play few roadworn you might find good ones.

Perhaps look at a used G&L Legacy, S-500 or George Fullerton. Great guitars that often go for a song used. Try Buffalo Brothers or: http://www.guitarsbyleo.com/MARKET/market.php3

For a grand, nothing would turn my head more than an American Standard. They're $999 at my local store, probably the best Strats Fender has ever made.
You can probably find a used KLine strat here for about that price... great guitars from a great guy....

Yes - sonic blue makes the best sounding Strat! I agree with everything K-dude says above. I recently sold a CS 60s Relic in favor of the Warmoth you see below. It's got a Braz board w/ SRV profile neck, Sheptone pups, Callaham trem, RS kit w/ PIO. Frickin' awesome guitar!
But to make things easy, you may just want to cop a used 62 AVRI if your intent is to have a back up that's just like your number 1. I had a 62 AVRI at the same time I had the CS 60s - I pref'd the CS because it felt broken in. I also had a 62 AVRI HR - The Hot Rods have a much fatter neck than your CS 60s.
