View Full Version : What is the average rate for lessons in your area?
What is the going rate for private lessons in your area and for how much time? Just curious to see how different areas compare to my hometown. We seem to be right at $15 per half hour here for the typical 'back room of the guitar store' type lessons.

I charge 15 a lesson for half hour paid a month at a time, my rates are lower than most everyone else who teaches, but I don't have a problem with it. I don't feel like upping the price on my students who've been coming for close to or more than a year.
I think most other people charge around 18 to 20.

I pay $16CAD per 1/2 hour lesson (which is a little over $13USD).

I charge $35/hour in person and $50/hour for internet/remote lessons.
I think that's about average or maybe a few bucks higher than average.

In Canadian bucks:
$50/hour, $40/three-quarter-hour, $30/half-hour.
Basically, around the same as my University rate...
Higher than average, but it is my 'day job'.

Well... either I'm easy, or this is a different market...
I only charge $15 / half hour or $25 / hour.

I charge $75 per month for half an hour per week. So that's $18.75 a half hour. There are a few teachers here (central valley CA) who charge 80, but with about 63 students I figure I'm charging enough. When I took lessons as a child about 15 years ago it was $35 a month.

Same here, $16.00 an hour with a great teacher at Mark's Guitar in Spokane, Washington.
OOG is charging double that in Huntington Beach, California (that's SoCal area) where the cost of living is about triple here.

I teach for two different companies, with pros & cons (for myself, that is) to each situation. My slice of the pie is $26.25/hr for one, and $34.00/hr for the other.

DAMN!!
When I called my old teacher for lessons he is now getting $65 an hour. Another reccommended teacher wanted $70.
The guy I finally found is $35 for 45 minutes, to me that seems very fair especially given his experience.
I have one student now and I charge $25 for an hour but I go to his place.

Man, I hear you, Mr. Hanky. Prices for lessons are outrageous anymore. Which is cool for me, since that's what I do... but I have free license to raise my rates, and I just can't find the heart to do it to my faithful students. Maybe I'd do well to be more of a mercenary, but that's a tough call. Anyway, I'd like to get some really good personalized Bluegrass and Celtic lessons for myself, but the budget's not there at the moment. I knew I should've been a lawyer or a brain surgeon.
