When I look at destroyallguitars.com...there are beautiful guitars, but they're all primarily in the 3-4K range.
What guitars or builders approache being comparable to these, but is more modestly priced?

I see Lowell guitars go used for less than that often which surprises me because those guitars look so damn nice.

There are plenty of luthiers in that range, depending on exactly what you're looking for. This cost me $1750, which is partly because I spent $350 on custom pickups; it was built to my specs and is exactly what I'd hoped it would be:

If that thing sounds as good as it looks then you got yourself a sweet deal. Who made it for you?

A luthier named Andrew Wright (http://www.awguitars.com/) made it for me, and you bet, it sounds that good! It plays like a dream, as well.

My least expensive model currently starts at $1200, most are under $2000.
It really depends on what you want in a guitar, and what you are willing to sacrifice (real or imagined) to reach a price point.

Used Suhr Pro Series guitars, some used Grosh models
Melancon has some at that price, I think
Rick Kelly guitars (new -- built by hand, but with a substantial wait)
Seems to me tgp's own Danocaster is priced around $1500.

US Masters. Yes, there are imports, but there are also some great US-made stuff in that range. WONDERFUL guitars for the price.
For me, I'd look at the Melancons, used Suhrs and Andersons and the like sometimes come close to that, and that Gadow is LOVELY!

There are plenty of options,as noted above. Depending on what you want US Masters has US made instruments from under $1,000, to $1,800, including bolt on and set neck instruments.

Mr Stadler, please tell us more about your guitar! I've never heard of butternut as a tone wood before.
Butternut is sometimes called white walnut, as it is in the genus Juglans. It is softer and lighter than walnut. It produces a nut that is larger and oilier than the walnut, hence the name. Its sonic signature is akin to walnut's, albeit softer, and overall the tone could be described as in between alder (smokey, raspy) and ash (poppy, open).
The tree is being wiped out by a canker, but it appears that a percentage of them are resistant. It will take some time for the species to recover.

It's chambered. I don't think I hear it in the tone, but then again I don't have a fully solid version to compare it with. It's reasonably light considering the woods, though, and it's very well balanced.
