I'm looking for that tape like echo, like eric johnsons tone in most of his songs. Which will you prefer and why? size is not an issue. i'm only caring abt the tone of each pedal this time.

I've had them both and the DMM is my favorite delay of all time. However, the Echo does a better tape delay, probably the best of any non tape unit.

i'm sure you have heard markom89's skreddy echo demo. its pretty damn sick. do you think a dmm can produce such tones?

I have recently picked up a new big box DMM, an XO DMM and a Skreddy Echo and have been putting them all through their paces. To me, the DMM is slightly brighter and the modulation on it produces a more liquid sound to the repeats. The Echo's repeats are slightly darker and the warble effect is also darker than the modulation you can dial in on the DMM. They all sound amazing to me and I plan on keeping all three of them. The Echo flat out nails the tape echo sound. The DMM is similar but different enough to warrant having both of them.
I think you might need to consider some of the features as well. For instance, they are both true bypass, the DMM is analog, the Echo is digital (but sounds nothing like digital), the Echo is going to give you about 100ms. more delay time, the Echo has the loop to be able to effect the repeats, the Echo has rate and intensity for the warble whereas the DMM only has one control over the chorus or vibrato.
The other thing you need to consider is headroom and are you planning on running some gain into it. The Echo has much much higher headroom and I hands down prefer the Echo for using it with a lot of dirt. When playing clean, I really like how the modulation on the DMM creates a subtle shimmer.
Lastly, the Echo can be run at 18v which I haven't done yet but Marc claims that it makes it more bell like (check his site for exact wording!). I'll stop there as I could go on and on comparing and contrasting these two wonderful delays as they have really awaken me to what I have been missing out on by using digital delays (TC Nova, TC D-Two, Echo Park, etc.) all these years. :jo :D

How do like the XO though? I have a Skreddy, and room for an XO.

I got the XO first about 3 or 4 weeks ago and then came across a new big box about 2 weeks ago. At first, I thought the big box sounded better in terms of it being a bit warmer and the modulation being more organic for lack of a better term. I have spent a lot of time with the big box and XO side by side and I have found that it is really a matter of how the knobs react to your tweaks. With the bigger knobs on the big box, you are able to dial in subtle changes much more easily than with the small knobs on the XO. After investing a lot of time into it, I found that I could tweak the XO to sound pretty much indistinguishable from the big box. Having said that, I would prefer the big box as it is easier to tweak but the size of the XO is quite nice if space is tight. I haven't had a lot of free time lately but am trying my best to do a video comparison of the big box and XO and maybe set it up as a Pepsi Challenge to see which one people think sounds better.
Here's a pic of the XO next to the Skreddy for size comparison purposes.

I have both...a big box DMM and grabbed one of the first echo's from tonefactor. Before I had both at the same time, it seemed reasonable to me that the two pedals were very similar. Now that I can try both side by side, I find I like the DMM better because the repeats are brighter, which makes the sound shimmer.
The echo is fantastic and has this hypnotizing way of blending in the repeats and modulation into your sound.
They both really are quite different in operation if you ever get to try both. (I'd recommend having both too! lol)

Compared the XO to the DMM and though I found the pedals to be much alike it is to my ears that with the XO it sounds like you are standing in a room with a very bad accoustic sound. There is some harsness or unmusical to it...

For brighter EJ echoes, the DMM would be a better choice. The Skreddy excels at darker, low bandwidth, worn out tape/magnetized heads sounds.

I've had both too and agree with the above 100%.

And the Rocketride First Echo on the Moon is a DMM with mods designed by Bjorn Juhl (The Mad Professor) of BJF to sound even more like a tape echo:
I love Markom's skreddy demo. I'd LOVE someone to A/B the Skreddy and The Rocketride First Echo on the Moon.

just to be clear, are we talking about the reissue dmm or the original?
thanks.

reissue big box/classics, but also the xo versions. while all the dmms I've owned sound a little different, they are all going to be clearer than the skreddy.
