Anyone have or used a MOTU Ultralite mk3 and not like it - if not what were the issues? I'm looking for something a little more flexible than the Apogee Duet I currently have. Looking for a few more inputs and outputs, as well as MIDI and S/PDIF capability. The Ultralite meets my criteria and I've read many good reviews. Just wondering about the dark side if there is one. FWIW I really like my Duet and may keep it for travel work, vacations, etc.

if you're considering using your apogee on the road i assume that you're planning on using the ultralite mostly at home, or in some sort of stationary place?

If that's the case you may consider the Traveler mk3. I started off with the Traveler at my DAW and really like it, you get 4 total mic pres which can be nice, along with a slew of other i/o. I've got it connected to a mixer and monitors as well and it works great.

I have my traveler set up in a relatively stationary place near my computer. I recently got an ultralite that i carry around with me that i really like. Having to fully unhook my traveler was too much of a hassle.

To answer your initial question i love my ultralite, i think it's a great interface and i use it all the time with garageband and logic on a mac laptop running snow leopard. i've not had a problem with it at all and i think the sound quality is great.

When i want to use more than 2 mics i use my traveler. I'll do a stereo acoustic guitar setup with another mic and it's great for that. Otherwise the ultralite's got it all.

Good luck with it!

I like my Ultralite a lot. I had a Presonus Firebox before. I considered the Duet but bought the Ultralite for the same reasons you state. The Duet is known for very good converters but I am quite pleased with the Ultralite quality.
