View Full Version : Loud amp humming

I searched the board and read through, but was hoping I could provide enough info to possibly get a more certain fix.

It's a 95 Blues Deluxe. It was working fine until my roommate said his guitar wasn't working, so I decided to plug it into my amp to see if I could get a quick diagnosis, and when the amp turned on and warmed up, the hum got louder. So, I unplugged the guitar and the noise continued. Then I turned my amp off and on and it was still there with no input cable or anything. When I unplug the speakers, it stops making the noise.

The humming noise is on both channels; however, when it's on the drive channel (I think, I'm away from the amp atm), the master volume will control the loudness of the hum while neither volume will on the other channel.

Any suggestions? :\

Never unplug the speakers when a tube amp is "on" is an idea worth mentioning. You can fry your output transformer. You've checked the tubes?

The amp was off when I unplugged them and whenever I changed something. Well, I just got home, and turned it on, and now it's back to normal. Why would it continue humming after having reset the tubes and unplugging the amp completely, but then just right itself (for future reference).

Also - thanks for the quick replies guys.

Near by lights, equipment in or near the room and during certain times of the day the transmission lines can bring unfiltered dirty noise into your home. There are many possibilities.

I usually turn off every piece of electrical equipment that I can {lights etc."} for the quietest amp sound.

When I unplug the speakers, it stops making the noise.

That's classic.
