It looks good, but I would add more back panel screws.

By the way, is that new or aged pine?
Also, how would you describe what your Tone Expansion System (TES) detuned port adds to a cab like this? I have a Mad Sound 1x10 detuned cab, so I'm familiar with the concept, I'd just like to know what it does for your cabs.

The design came from the ported cab and detuned cab combined.
End result is a small cab with huge sound and low end for the size.


Other "side effects"
- rich sound, this is due to the seperation of sound, ie: speaker sound and sound produced inside the cab are different and, well tink of it as a 1x12 and 1/2.

- more depth to the sound, because there is a slight delay (a fraction of a second) from the speaker sound to the sound exiting the inside of the cab.

I set out to make great sounding cabs after getting a "major name brand" 4x12 cabinet that set me back $800 bucks, just to find out it was made with pressed cardboard and hot glue.
I took it back and started looking into the cab history and sound, etc.

The Pine is actually new Kimberly Bay Pine, I looked for old Pine but here all I have is palm trees, not that i'm complaining.

I also have a bunch of other exotic inlay woods that can be used.

I think the cab looks classy. One thing that I like to see on small cabinets is the ability to run a second cab from the back of the first one. Is this an option?

Yes, not a problem at all. I can install a dual plate on the back and wire for second cab.

By the way we use ( long title) 12 guage, oxigen free, high definition, low loss speaker cable and Switchcraft jacks.

These are some reviews of our Fat Cat 1x12, I would say the Special Edition 1x12 is a bit warmer in tone, due to the Pine.

I build custom furniture for a living and IMHO, that's some very nice work!

You asked for feedback so ..................... The only things I would change are, like Doug said, use more fasteners on the back panel, especially with pine. And I would insert or flush mount the back panel for two reasons. 1. I don't like seeing all of that end grain vs. seeing the side grain of the top, bottom, and sides ........ and 2. It adds stability / strength to the cab.

One more reason (so I guess there's 3 reasons:) ) to flush mount the back, you can use cleats and T nuts to fasten the back. Much stronger than screwing into pine.

It's a great looking cab though! I really like the front design.

It's certainly good looking. What are the dimensions?

The problem with so many 1x12s (particularly closed-backs) is that they sounds small, pinched and don't project enough bottom-end. The 1x12s I've liked best, tonally, were over-size, with a relatively wide and tall baffle with speaker low to the ground and ports on the front too. This seems to help the bass response and makes the cab sound bigger, IMO.

It measures 24"W x 19"T x 10.5"D.

With a Celestion V30 installed it weighs 31 lbs.

And to me at least it sounds huge, I am really happy with the tonal qualities and projection.

I play my tele and les paul into an Aiken Tomcat head, projected by a Tone_Tools 1x12. Excellent bottom... and not in a boomy way. Very natural presence and lively when miked, too. Used to play on the east coast; now in Japan and this thing is solid/excellent craftsmanship. I actually have two of Cas's 1x12's... one loaded with a red fang and one loaded w/a private jack. In the US we played 20-80 people... now play to +/-500 and this box projects like anything I could imagine. If you have one, you'll know what I mean when I say that miking one of these cabs is a sweet treat. Something delightful happening there. These cabs' utility is on! Would love to hear the one in the picture. FWIW, I have 12 screws/caps holding my back on.

This just confirms what I've been thinking for a while with electric guitars... the amp and speaker are more than 2/3 of the sound. In fact, I think that you can use a $120 electric guitar with a killer amp (like my MAZ 18 Junior) and it's going to sound better than a $5000 guitar through a mediocre rig.

The speaker is a musical instrument. Long live the valve amp.
