I spent some time reviwing MANY posts on TGP to find these 6 speakers referenced for both Tweed Deluxes (5E3) and Deluxe Reverbs (AB763).
Celestion Gold, 8 ohm, 50W, 100dB
Celestion G12H, 8 ohm, 30W, 100dB
Eminence Cannabis Rex, 8 ohm, 50w, 102dB
Tone Tubby H1E, 8 ohm, 40w, 97.3dB
Weber 12A125, 8 ohm, 30w, TBD
Weber 12A150, 8 ohm, 25w, TBD
I have answered a few speaker questions below. Which of the above or others most closely matches my objectives?
Bright/crisp sound or warm/smooth sound?
Warm and smooth is preferred
Coloring of the sound, e.g. browner sound, colored sound, un-colored/transparent sound?
Unlike a stereo speakers, I associate all guitar speakers with some form of euphonic coloration. Perhaps in terms of transparency, do you mean like an old EV or JBL? I tend NOT to like darker sounding speakers. The 5E3 can create some dark sounds. Some color is ok if it complements to amplifier/guitar tone.
More compressed or less compressed sound?
I prefer a bit of both. When I play clean, I like open, airy tone but when I dig in, amp SAG and compression are welcome.
Early or late speaker breakup (e.g. more or less clean headroom)?
I do not need tremendous head room because I am always playing my single channel amps on the edge of breakup. The Allen has more headroom than the 5E3 obviously. The loudest volume I am ever clean would be to think of a Deluxe Reverb set between 4 to 6. I only maintain being clean by backing off on my picking or rolling the guitar volume down a touch. I never play at anything louder than a small club.
Smooth/creamy breakup or grainy/crunchy breakup?
Smooth, creamy breakup please....
Frequency focus? E.g. balanced across the entire guitar frequency range, more emphasis on the lows, mids, highs, etc.?
Both of these Fender circuits have sloppy poor bass, so anything that will help there is welcome (either tighter or deemphasiized because the amps put out what they put out...). Like many guitarists, mid range emphasis, particularly when the amp is over driven. When playing the Allen I appreciate some high end sparkle and spank particularly when playing a Tele clean.
Voicing, more of an American/Fender kind of sound, British Vox kind of sound, etc.?
That is hard to say. I have heard many tones that I love attached to the right player, guitar and amp from a variety of sounds. I do not think the Vox sound is for me, but both American and British voicings can both sound great. For cleans, I would definitely say American, but for over driven sounds I have heard both American and British tones that I have enjoyed.
I suspected a compromise was in order between two different circuits. I suppose I could play through different cabinets, but having one for both would be great if possible. If based on what I have answered above, nothing rings a bell please let me know. If that is the case, then which speaker would be best for each (I'll have to get a 2nd cabinet).
