Do you like Terje Rypdal? Loved aug sound! What guitar and amp did you use?

Hey Tomo!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I haven't listened to much Terje Rypdal, but what I've heard I liked. I was playing my '86 PRS Custom 24 w/ Tom Holmes pickups thru my Fuchs ODS 50 modded Bassman head w/ Mojotone 2-12 cab. Klon Centaur into Crowther Hotcake into Boss DDL into amp w/ OD on, I think.

Thanks for listening. I enjoy your clips too!

I should maybe mention that I came up with a wiring scheme for my PRS that gives me a setting with the outside coils of the humbuckers both on in series. It is my all time favorite desert-island electric guitar sound. That's what I'm using on both cuts that I recently posted. Kinda like Duane Eddie on steroids! Sounds great clean and overdriven...

Thanks, John! I also took lessons from Wingo for a couple of stretches. Great guy, GREAT teacher. Also took some lessons from Rick Whitehead, way back when he was still w/ the Airmen of Note. Also a great guy, great player. Took a lesson or two from Bollenback too. We've been blessed to have had some killer players in this area!

gantt

...great playing!

...I was looking at your website and saw that you've recorded 3 guys that I took lessons from when I lived in the D.C. area; Paul Bollenback, Paul Wingo and Steve Abshire...I'll bet you know Rick Whitehead too...

...anyway...thanks for sharing...

Thanks, Tomo! I played Teles thru Fender amps for many, many years. I guess I get a bit of that sound no matter what I play. Still have a "Tele" (partscaster, but a great guitar) and a Deluxe Reverb and still take them out to gigs pretty often.

Thanks again for listening!

Hey Billy! Thanks! I doubt I could play a whole tune without playing some Danny licks! I spent a lot of nights listening to him and days trying to figure out how the hell he did what he did...

I got the whole tone blues!! Very cool. I like your outside the box approach!

I used to play tenor in a funk band where the horn parts were lots of whole tone, tri-tone, and other weird intervals played in traditional syncopated funk rhythms. Your solo made me flash back on that experience.

Thanks, Paul! I spend a lot of my time in the box on most of my gigs. It's fun when they let me sneak out for a minute!

thats some hot playing man!! i love that augmented stuff. i think thats what im hearing, correct me if im wrong, my ears are still developing.
i would love it if you explained some of the ideas you were using. i would love to incorporate it into my playing.

Thanks! I actually "composed" that head on piano. It's built out of a flattened fifth lick with fourths ascending in whole steps. I have no idea how to explain that theoretically! I just thought it sounded cool. Pretty much the story of my life! The rest of the stuff, more or less, comes out of a somewhat fractured dominant 7 major/minor w/ flat 5 (since it is, after all, a blues) approach. I play a lot out of the fingerboard shapes and positions that many people might call "pentatonic" but I don't consider myself a very pentatonic player. I mostly think (if I think at all, which is ALWAYS dangerous!) in terms of altered major and minor scales. Does that help? My other clip (also bumped today) posted as "My first clip - please be kind" is a more minor kind of thing. Might shed more light on how I play, might not!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words and have a great holiday!

I lied. I just did a little anal-ysis and discovered that the ascending lick is also a flat 5 interval. Flattened by fifth again. Not the first time!

thanks man. i also listened to your other clip. that does help shed some light on what your doing. im trying to work some stuff out now with those ideas. thanks alot for sharing man, i truly appreciate the help. have a merry christmas.
i have a song posted on here right now that i would love if you would listen to. you could probably give me some pointers. im just starting to expand my playing. i have loads of theory knowledge, but have never really applied it to my lead playing.
thanks again.

I'll go find your clip. Theoretical knowledge, while undeniably useful and valuable, is highly over-rated in the heat of battle!
