PELUSO CEMC6

They sound incredible on acoustics and come in a matched pair too.

I chose them over the Shure SM81s.

Umm, less than $300 is tight for good stuff. I chose used Oktava MK012s. Be careful you get the Russian ones, not the Guitar Center knock-offs. When you have a little more cash spend $100 each to get them upgraded and they'll hang with anything, including a Neuman!

Someone on Talkbass selling (2) AKG C1000's ... nice mics ... right in your budget, too.

Edit ... same guy has 'em listed here, too

There was a huge SDC microphone comparison in Tape Op recently. It wasn't the most rigorous, but might offer some ideas. I remember a pair of Audio-Technicas were well-liked and cheap. Something in the 2000 series, I think.

(audio tecnica)AT450's are great for lots of sources, but they're 400.oo for a pair.

Pretty darn flat response, with cardioid pattern, and high pass filter.

I actually chose them over the Nueman KM184's for classical guitar.

In your budget, I'd try a pair of MXL 604 mics; they're about $100 each new and include both omni and cardioid capsules. It's a great mic for the price with plenty of output - something useful is you use a cheaper/noisy mic preamp. If you can go a little higher, then I'd go for used Shure KSM137 or Octava MK012 mics (both outstanding, IMO).

MXL 993...find a matched pair on eBay for around $100-$120. I have one and it works great as a single overhead for our live gigs.

I have also heard good things about the Audio Technica, as far as being a good value.

I have a pair of CAD GXL 1200's and have used them in numerous applications for drum overheads, strings, acoustic guitar, percussions, and even for stage dialogue with excellent results. AMS sells them for $69.95 each. Michael Molenda of Guitar Player magazine wrote a very favorable review of them back in 2004 or 2005, if I am not mistaken.

Hey guys... im planning to get a Pair of Small Diaghram Condenser Mic's. i was thinking of picking up a Pair of Audio Technica Pro37's read a lot o great reviews.

But I liked these well enough to sell my 2 AT Pro 37s without hesitation. I preferred them for both acoustic guitar and drums in the "gyn johns" positions, and, well, that's what I need them for, so the decision was easy.

Maybe worth considering...?

I'm partial to the KEL HM1, which are very affordable mics, with a natural, non hyped high end. They don't have a ton of output, but they would be fine for most preamps ; if you were using a tube pre that only gave 35db or so, these mics would only work as close overheads on drums, or as close mics.

The overhead used for the drums on the songs on my myspace page was an HM1, most of the cymbals and snare sound are coming from that mic (there was only one other mic on the drums). The drums sound a bit dark to me from the MP3 versions on typical computer speakers, but that's a mix thing, the mics themselves pick up a very nice high end. They're darker than most cheap SDCs but they're still detailed.

Oktava MK012's.

Get the russian ones.

Then when you feel the need to upgrade, send them to Michael Joly at Oktavamod. These mics are fantastic bang for the buck.

Amazing sounding mics for a very easy price.
