I think it's the November issue-tons of pedal reviews. I don't have mine yet-anyone already get it in the mail and if so when? I hope it's not lost. Anyway, the Rockbox pedal is reviewed-got 5 stars, which they don't give out often.

Mine always takes forever to get here also. If you can't wait you can go to their website and read the digital edition free.

The online version of the review has the nice "sound clip" feature. PG noted in the article " there are a ton of good overdrive pedals out there", and indeed there are copious tons of OD reviews in mags, with gobs of common vernacular. Hearing allows the reader/listener of the review to work toward their own opinion, I wish that could happen with the paperback version. :rockin
Guitarist magazine in the UK provide a DVD with soundfiles, video, etc. Very useful.

I love Guitarist magazine and subscribed for about 5 years -- right up there with PG IMHO (which is now my fave). But for myself (uh. . .and to my wife :-) I just couldn't justify the $120 annual subscription any more. I know you get a CD/DVD every month with it, but as I told the publisher: if they did a CD-less version for maybe around half the price I'd renew. Wonder if others would as well? Great mag though.

Every pedal gets a rating from 4-5. Perhaps they should review their rating system. Also the pedals are pretty expensive. Why not have a budget, average, and high price option in each category?

Clips are important. We knew when we started doing pedal reviews on the site that we had to incorporate audio.

Indeed, they did a beautiful review of some of my gear, the pictures and sounds files were quite good. :aok
As was the actual review. You scored pretty well :aok

Yeah, the clip of that boiling point pedal let me know that it is NOT for me. Where's that vomiting smiley? Oh yeah: :barf

Each and every pedal got a 4 star rating (in a range of 5). That's what I usually hate about reviews...

I agree that clip was under-whelming! But, as an owner of the boiling point, I can tell you they were simply showing you one option that pedal has to offer. Who plays a lead tone with their neck pickup and tone rolled all the way back? Not many...
The pedal has a ton to offer, some compare it to Landgraff, but I think it has it's own thing going on. It has very very musical feedback with the gain above about 2pm you can get some marshall tones that are out of this world (on the plexi setting) on the symmetrical gain side you can really dial in some different tones. I would caution you not to judge this pedal by one clip...look at PGS video and the video on youtube and even then it doesn't touch the tones this box has. My .02

I got it...Premiere Guitar is by far my favorite guitar mag...even the issues on bass and accoustic (not my primary interests) were great issues...and this pedal issue was sweet...my wife put it on my pillow as she knows what a pedal junkie I am...

All the audio clips i heard there sounded like crap...what is the point of doing something so elaborate and having such bad sound clips?
Do these guys know what they are doing?

The State Of The Stomp article pg. 120, not credited... http://www.hauntingmids.com/forum/Smileys/default/_3db90682b8ab-ph34r.gif
"I honestly think it's better than ever right now. You have a ton of variety to choose from, high quality builds, innovative new stuff, etc. More info at your fingertips than ever before to make informed buying decisions, and the forum system to connect directly with manufacturers. This is the golden age people, seriously."
I guess Analog Tom musta had writer's block or something, because 1/2 the article was mined from forumite posts on TGP and HCFX. http://www.hauntingmids.com/forum/Smileys/default/free2talk_dabd26019f36-laugh.gif

How on earth would a story like that go to press with a bunch of anonymous quotes from an internet forum. At the very least he could have sent a few emails or PMs to figure out if the opinions were from relevant people or just random forumites. Attributions are very important and just yanking a bunch of opinions from random internet people without giving anyone a reason to care who they are or why their opinions matter is lazy journalism.
Oh look, there is an unattributed quote from me in there too
“Since 2000 there has been an exponential rise in manufacturers and diversity of designs. While many builders are focusing on clones of vintage pedals exclusively, there are many more that are pushing the boundaries of effects design. There still remains the issue of the boutique vs. generic consumer. Forum readers always believe that they are the center of the effects world and everyone knows about their discussions. However, boards belonging to professional musicians overwhelmingly show that the readily available and mass produced effects are still the primary focus of major working musicians. As in years past, this continues to shed light on the relatively small scope of Internet discussion boards in the grand scheme of guitar playing.”

I got my issue a few days ago. I don't understand why they put the Mad Professor Sweet Honey od on the cover and it's not in the magazine-you have to look online for the review.:huh Still a good issue though. I liked the review of the diy pedal kits. Where was GGG though?

I started a subscription to Premier Guitar a few months ago just out of curiosity. So far I'm not exactly thrilled with the magazine. I thought this pedal issue might be on to something, but after reading through it, they really didn't cover that many pedals. Meh.... I don't think I'll be renewing my subscription.

Uh, lots of players?
That's a widely-used lead tone with a pair of humbuckers.
(Are you being sarcastic, maybe?)

Maybe the neck pickup but not with the tone rolled all the way back for me. That would be way too muffled to cut through.

I wonder if they'll quote me from my last post in their next issue?

From legendarytones.com:
"A unique tone that Eric developed during the Cream years was the Woman Tone, which is best exemplified on “Sunshine of Your Love” and “Outside Woman Blues,” from the Disraeli Gears albums. The sustaining, kazoo-like sound came from turning the tone controls for either or both pickups all the way off, sharply reducing the high frequencies, and the pickup volumes all the way up. This created a very thick tone that still had enough note definition and attack to be useful. Clapton used it judiciously to highlight passages or to create memorable melodies... Another fine example of the sound is from the track “I Feel Free,” on Fresh Cream. His solo starts with the woman tone on the neck pickup in full glory, holding long notes and creating a liquid melody that leads to an abrupt change of tone during the solo’s final bars, switching to the bridge pickup’s hard bite for a stinging conclusion...

Paid for monthly periodicals is a model of the past. Seems to me magazines be better off making a really good quarterly or do the TapeOp model.
This day and age is all about two-way active content, lifting quotes without credit flies in the face of those who participate and actually provide the content.

I got my issue yesterday in the mail.
It looks like a Rottweiler got a hold of it.
The backbone or binding is all chewed up.
When I first subscribed to the magazine it came wrapped in plastic.
I think that was only the first two or three that were like that.
Now I think my mailman reads it or drags it behind his truck.
But I do like it, I used to have Vintage Guitar but it is 75% ads anymore.

The Premier guitar pedal issue showed up at my local Barnes and Noble, I wasn't that impressed with their pedal reviews, but the article with Brad Paisley was neat, I have always liked his skilled guitar playing and he is a big Keeley user. he did a CD called "Play" and it is mostly just guitar instrumentals with guests, easily my favorite CD of his, his country stuff can be a bit corny, but this guy can play.

True. I get most of my subscriptions free (Tape Op, EQ, EM, Mix, etc), but I decided to try PG on a whim. Win some, lose some.
