Always hate to see the first snow, but its not the earliest we have ever gotten flurries.

Right this second, we are getting those BIG flakes mixed with tiny rain drops. Yuck

First? In this part of Wisconsin, we have already gotten our 4th measurable snowfall (6+ in. total)....and it is still October. Definitely early for this kind of regular snowfall.

We'll be pushing 90 degrees on Monday.

Next year. Next summer. For now I wish we had some fall weather...say 75 or so. Just too damned late in the year to be pushing 90.

Agreed. On all counts.:aok

Just like it's too early to have already had multiple snowfalls (although I can find the silver lining in it. It has basically prevented the Asian beetles from swarming this year and is keeping the ticks down until we can get a permanent snow cover sometime next month.)

I'm in Dixon and haven't seen anything yet. The local weather said it's likely that this October will go down on record as the coldest ever recorded. :thud

It completely sucks but I'm flying south next month for a while. Can't do a whole winter there but I'd like to!

It's supposed to be drier and warmer this winter as El Nino is firing up.

This is the earliest sustained cold I can remember. Fall should be a season of warm days and cold nights leading us into the snowy season. Our trees started to change and then bam! snow and freezing temps just stopped fall dead in its tracks. Nice day here and there but all we hear about now is the approaching winter storm warnings every other day it seems...

I see nothing wrong here.

If you look at history, it seems that the weather naturally changes. No news here.

Yippee! Let's see get skiis ready, waterproof winter boots, get out showshoes, pack survival gear in trunk (blankets, food, etc), get the studs on the cruiser, check washer fluid, repair chains, look for ski outfit like the Beatles wore in Help!, break out my heavy down comforter. Ah, I have a purpose again!

That tick issue is nasty. Weird, even though it doesn't get that cold here I haven't seen a tick on my dog...ever. He's over 10 too. Previous dog no ticks in this house either. You have to worry about that damned deer tick too.

Yep. This is indeed major tick country. We moved here from the Pacific NW, where fleas and ticks were a non-issue. We really don't seem to have any fleas at all, but the ticks are very prevalent. Initially after the snow melt in Spring, then they seem to go away during the warmest months of July and August, only to reappear when it begins to cool off in Sept.

This year, Sept was unusually warm, so they didn't really start to appear again until a few weeks ago. Hopefully we will get a snow cover soon and then they are gone until next Spring.

I don't use chemical flea or tick repellent on my dogs, but use a natural repellent as well as a powder made from neem and yarrow that kills whatever parasites it comes in contact with. That...and checking them (and myself) every day...seems to do an ok job. But still, not having to worry about it through the winter is a major relief.
