I'm having a difficult time finding half-caff coffee. So far, all I've been able to find in half-caff is some terrible Folgers coffee. So, I had an idea. Couldn't I just go to the grinder section at the store, grind half a bag of regular and half a bag of decaff to make half-caff after mixing it together. This sounds so stupidly obvious. However, when I told a friend, she said it doesn't work that way. I'm totally correct, right?

Should work just fine. :)

I take a sorta-similar approach, keeping one package of each in the freezer and take a scoop of each pack to dump in the filter when making java.

Let's see here. Full caf is full, so even half a pound of it is full caf.
1/2 caf is half. If you buy a full pound, it's all half - half a pound is still half.
OK. Now, let's take that 1/2 pound of full and add the half pound of half.
For the sake of just talking about the amount of caff, one half of the half pound of half is full, while the other half has none, making it half overall. So since one half of the half, or one quarter of the full pound being produced is full, wouldn't you wind up with something like 3/4 caff?
Maybe something like starting with a quarter pound of full and 3/4 pound of half would make the overall mix something like half caff.
I admit this is confusing, but I think your friend is technically correct. But you are correct that making your own blend most certainly will begin to lessen the amount of caffeine. :thud

Hah! I know the feeling... except in my case it's more a matter of keeping the reflux at bay. ;) Soooooo... it's only two cups each morning, and probably only 20% the strength I used to make it!

Amazing how adaptable I've become in my middle age... and dammit, I'm really hoping 51 is 'middle age'. :rotflmao

I'd get half full caff and half decaff. For example 1/2 pound full caff and 1/2 pound decaff mixed together. Wouldn't that essentially make it half caff (or just a tad more).

Nope... check your math: (0.5 x 1.0)+(0.5 x 0.0) = 0.5, not 0.75!

I keep bags of each kind, and just grind a scoop of each in the morning, and mix it up. Instant 1/2 & 1/2! How could your friend say "that doesn't work"?

One half bag of full caf is traveling at a rate of a barista. In the other direction, one half bag of half caf is traveling at the rate of a meth addict. How many TGP's does it take to make a decent cup of coffee?

Answer:
Tell your friend to stop using Meth.

I've been buying both kinds for over 20 years. I mix it to whatever strength I want whenever I make coffee. Why would you mix it ahead of time?

I'd only ever drink 1/2 caff or less. I only drink one cup of coffee (6 oz.) each weekday only. The bags would start losing flavor if I had two.

Buy a bag of decaf, buy a bag of regular. Put half of each in your coffee pot. Etc.

My wife and I have been mixing caff and decaf for years. I don;t know how much less caff I get but I do know when I go for full on gonzo caff, I can tell the difference.

Yeah, sometimes at Peet's when they give me the free cup for buying a pound of coffee, I get the full caff cup, and I often regret it--it's like you just did a line of crank.

Personally....Death before Decaf. I work on high end Espresso and coffee machines, and half-caf is an option on most Espresso machines. Mixing half and half is fine, not sure where all the confusion is coming from. I drink 10-15 shots of Espresso a day, and I don't have a problem. I can quit whenenver I want, seriously, no problem at all..........

Gah.

Go get a big assed can of Folgers. Put two or three scoops of it in your coffeepot. (You have one of those, don't you?)

When the pot fills up, pour yourself a cup.

Put a spoonful of sugar in it...no pansy assed 'sweet and low' or 'splenda.'

Drink it.

Shouldn't have said Folger's specifically. You should use whatever they have on sale in the coffee aisle at the Piggly Wiggly, Winn Dixie, or Wal Mart.

Decaf coffee doesn't taste as good as regular coffee. So instead of doing a half and half just make a half-sized cup. That's what I do.

No, I don't believe everything I read on the net, no I don't loose sleep worrying about this stuff, but I read somewhere that decaf is not good for you....anyone know why???

can't imagine why, maybe the way they remove the caffeine? I know one way to make alcohol free wine is to centrifuge it out and replace with water. I dunno...

Anyone know where I can get double-caf?

And don't say mix regular with quadruple.

Just freebase Starbucks. Or maybe start an IV and do a caffiene drip.
