Has anyone tried designing with 6SQ7's? (its an octal signal tube with a hi-mu triode and double diode). that triode section looks good - an octal triode w/ a mu of 100. anyway.....those w/ expereince:what did you think of them?

...I assume the lack of response indicates a "NO" answer.

...although the 6SQ7 might "look" neat, you have to remember that MOST guitar amps tend to get "tuned" by physically substituting different tubes...both recitifiers and preamps...so, the 6SQ7 with internal dual-diodes means you wouldn't be able to "try" different diodes without either: (A) having to "add" an external diode rectifier; or, (B) having to "add" an external preamp tube. Do-able, but certainly NOT very convienent.

...just before the transistor "took-over" the tube companies were experimenting with and producing LOT's of "do-everything-tubes"...especially tubes used in TV sets, so the 6SQ7 isn't really too unique, just not popular.

yeah, just looked like a possibility to design a high-gain octal preamp around. course, those diodes would be sittin around with their thumbs up their butts.... AND i happenn to have a stash of NOS ones sitting at my old place, so it just got the mind to thinking.... anyway, chris siegmund also told me not to bother with the SQ7. guess i'll stick with with SL7's

now, who here has used planar triodes in a a guitar preamp, raise yr hand! (no, i can't raise my hand. yet.)
