View Full Version : Anyone else do self haircuts?

I've been doing it for about 3 years now, and man, it's a challenge every time. I usually need my wife to come and fix it up for me. Good times!

BTW, I use a Wahl kit which operates cordless and I have an older Conair kit. The battery died mid-haircut on my wahl a few months ago and I was finishing up with the Conair, when suddenly the guide comb popped off and a big clump of hair followed it to the floor. Let's just say it was time to break out guide comb #1 after that. Good times!

I do my 2 boys, as well, and at one of my last barbecues, I ended up doing a few other heads. Good times!

Ah, but how long does it take you to do it vs driving to the barber, waiting there, the actual cut, and driving home? Probably takes less time to do it at home.

I haven't been to a barber/salon in probably 7 years. My wife does it now. Of course having not much hair means it takes her 10-15 mins from start to finish. :p

Been cutting my own hair with clippers for about 10 years. Not because I'm cheap, but because I'm picky. I've got the process down to about 15 minutes max. Easy.

I have had a "SIIB" (sod it i'm bald) haircut for several years now and I use a remington shaver once a week, no prob's.

Been doing it myself for about 5 years. Takes 10-15 minutes.

Hvr, 2 or 3 times a year I go to a "pro" so that the back can be cleaned up better. My wife usually notes that the rest of the haircut is not as good as when I do it myself.

Im lazy and cheap is why I do it. #2 all over. Sometimes I get my daughter to clean up the back of my neck for me.

I use clippers and have been cutting it shorter and shorter for years now. My wife trims the back for me. It takes longer to clean up than to cut it. I'd love to try a Flowbee.

My barber retired a couple years ago, so I rocked the #4 shaver for a while.

On a side note, seems every-time I get a haircut About half way through he barber gets interrupted (answer the phone, take a bet from a bookie) and then when the come back he forgets exactly how he cut the first side. Seems I always have one side that lays right and one that has a problem BUT it's not always the same side. Just one time I'd like to get a cut that the person doing it would stay with me all the way through and for just once in my life both sides would lay right. Just once.

yes, the days of long flowing locks are gone and I dont feel like primping anymore.
I keep the setting on two on the clippers, everything is done with setting two.
It looks pretty good although the very back of the neck can be troublesome.
I do my best with it but it helps a ton not giving a rats arse what others think.
I dont care.

Been cutting my own hair for over 23 years now.

I paid attention when having it done and used to be married to a Cosmotologist.
One Sunday evening I needed a haircut so I did it myself, came out good and continued ever since.

Sure is convienient.
I can do the back well too but I have taught my wife how to do the back so I'm not doing the contortionist thing anymore.

Funny thing is the 2 times in the last twenty years I had someone else do it I touched it up when I got home.

That's also why I work on my own vehicles too.

10 years of home haircuts. Wife used to do it, but now I usually handle it myself, #2 guard all over. Wife cleans up the neck if she's around.

That is a good hobby that you've got there. There's many kinds of layering (soft, long, razor cut, etc.) that you can learn if you want to take haircuts to the next level...

I pay $15 to get a fancy do at a Salon. The guy that does it is a soloist at his Church and guitar player. So, we talk about music or family most of the time. It's a social event! If you think $15 is lots to pay, you are like a 2,000 pound canary - Cheeeeap!

Did my husband's and my son's hair for many years. Still do hubby's most of the time. I used to take my son to a hair dresser and he and I neither one normally liked the way they cut it, so I started doing it myself.

Tried it for a year. I guess I saved money, and my wife thought it was alright, but when I look back at pics of that year I can't believe someone didn't stop me.

Straight buzz. one or two settings is all you should really do on your own.

I guess, sort of. It breaks off where I sit on it (below the waist). Haven't "cut" it in, what? Like 30 something years...

Been doing it myself for a long time.
I've always like my hair fairly long ( pre-Beatles, a teacher at school said to me "Why don't you get your hair cut - you look like a bloody poet") and hated barbers, even expensive ones. I've got curly hair and they could never get it right - I'd asked for a trim and come out like a skinhead.
Then the comments at work - "tell us who it is and we'll get him for you" etc.
So I decided to do it myself - dead easy, scissors all round, and a trimmer at the back. Admittedly, with curly hair, I can get away it - with dead straight hair it's probably more difficult to DIY.

1/2" buzz, then let it grow till it annoys me; repeat! Last pro cut I got was a $40 cut in a fancy, Nashville hotel. As soon as I got home, out came the 1/2 buzzer. Never again...

When I had all my hair I would have never considered cutting it myself. I had the kind of hair that looks like phone cords if I let it grow in long. better left to somebody who knows what they are doing.

Then around 22 or 23 my face started expanding upward.

Kept using shorter and shorter guards on the clippers til about 10 years ago, then started shaving my head clean. That way it at leat SEEMED like a choice.

Did that til a year ago Christmas and got lazy during a long period off work. Couldn't see going back to the upkeep so I started letting it grow again. Had it come in evenly I'd have maybe let it get long but I was getting to look like Bill Golden on the jaw, and the top was way more Larry than Moe.

So, back to the clippers....

Just did mine today. My hair was getting long and with the extraordinary amount of duck diving I did today, I kept coming up with my locks in my eyes while I was trying to paddle out.

So, I took my clippers and put the 1-1/4" attachment. I go all around with that, then I take the 7/8" attachment and feather it around my ears and up the side a bit.
I do the back the same as well.

I look quite keen.

I'm surprised at the numbers in this thread...I'm grew up in the 80's and wouldn't be caught dead letting someone other than a professional touch my hair.
Kids that let their granny or mommy cut their hair got no love growing up in my town

I'm thinking a generational thing?

I grew up in the 80s too. In Jr. High that mattered, now I don't care. I grew up. My wife cuts mine.

Growing up means running away from 80s hair.:)

Look at it this way: it was stylists who were responsible for the mullet. No self-respecting self-haircutter would mulletize himself.

Been cutting my own for years, even when I had hair. Have a little auto inspection mirror on a telescoping handle that makes the back easy. Deal is these days, who the hell am I kidding paying somebody for a spiffy little haircut when the biggest fashion decision I have is whether to use the 3/8" or 1/4" rake on my clippers? And oh yeah, how far down into the back/chest tree line. God this is sad isn't it?

From that pic, I doubt anyone would give you crap about your hair anyway. Its not wise to mess with a man with a large hammer nor is it wise to mess with a man with an axe. You'd have to be a freakin' idiot to mess with a man with both!!!

As for the question, I don't cut my own hair. I had a friend in high school that did. Once he looked worse than Moe of the Three Stooges, I think he literally did put a bowl on his head and shaved around it! Then another time he buzzed himself but accidentally left a few hairs in the back, someone said he looked like a sperm and was known as Big Sperm for a few months. For that reason, I don't attempt to do it myself lol.

Some times I do mine and other times I'll let BoRics do it. I'll have BoRics do an '8' all over and as time goes by, I'll cut the front and sides myself with scissors. The front and sides get cut to about an inch long.

At the moment, I haven't had it done elsewhere in over a year. It's starting to get unruly on the sides and if I cut them, it'll start resembling a mullet. Following this past weekend's gigs, where my longish hair was causing me to be uncomfortably warm, I may be hitting BoRics, soon.

Did another cut today and remembered how important it is to do the neck shave. Doing the bottom is terribly difficult to get right, as I like to graduate from #1 on the bottom up to #3 and then #5 on top.

The key is to not wait too long between cuts, maybe redo after 2 weeks.

Never been to the barber in my life. My mom (who is far from a barber) always just buzzed me and when I got old enough I did it myself. Still do -- I cut it about once every 2 to 3 months. My girlfriend / fiance does my neck for me.
