I have an Allen Class Act amp that I built from a kit several years ago. After I built it I used it fairly often and it seemed fine. Lately I hauled it out again, and it doesn't seem right. Very harshly trebly, little body to the sound, regardless of how the B/M/T tone controls are set. One thing I noticed is that with the 3 tone controls all the way down, the amp produces no sound. Is this normal? Also I discovered, much to my dismay, that the single power tube may have been inserted incorrectly, since the tube socket has been altered enough so that the guide thing on the tube can go in more than way. I'm afraid it may have powered up that way. Anyway, any advice to this non-tech about this will be appreciated. I can take the amp to a tech but I'd like to have a little knowledge before I do so. Thanks!

Try some new tubes.Sounds like that may be all that's wrong.
Go figure that a bad tube may be the issue with a tube amp,eh?

That's not it. I've tried several tubes, same basic problems. Thanks for your reply.

It's normal for the amp (Fender-style tone stack) to not pass a signal with all the tones on zero, it grounds all the signal and none is passed on. As for the sound, it could be cause by damage to a component(s) as a result of inserting the power tube incorrectly.
Needs to go to the amp doc for a checkup/fix I think. or....
Since you built it you could just go back to the kit assembly and troubleshooting instructions Dave includes w/ the kits and trace the steps and check components for damage and replace as necessary.

Thanks a lot. Very helpful. I really wondered about that tone control thing. Also, with the power tube inserted incorrectly, I can't believe that didn't fry something. This amp will be seeing a doc real soon.
