View Full Version : Do you want to be famous?

On one hand it's cool. Growing up, it was always a dream to be famous... a star... an icon.

However, the downside can be scary. Stalkers. Loss of privacy. All eyes on you. Can't pick your nose in public. Might not even be able to go out in public and enjoy simple things.

After weighing the pros and cons... I'm happy to be a nobody.

How about you?

I would hate being famous. I do not like being the center of attention. Actually, I hate being the center of attention. This means I like my privacy and really don't like being around a lot of people. So yeah, being famous does not appeal to me at all.

Brad Pitt level of fame? Definitely not.
Mayor of a small town level of fame? Possibly.

After my school days, I've gotten annoyed when I hear people who say they know/knew me (or know/knew of me) and I don't know them, know of them, or recognize their name.

So even though I would love to generate some income from music, I'm really not interested in the supposed required publicity/marketing of my name/background/photo, personal stuff. I just don't see why its important except to satisfy a curiosity. Its kind of a dilemma for me.

Nope...I enjoy my anonymity.

I have a friend/acquaintance who is a major recording artist....very well known...saw him once at a mall with two of his kids....ball cap and sunglasses on...trying to "hide" so to speak....not for me at all.

Paparazzi following every move you make. People asking for autographs while you are trying to eat at a restaurant. TMZ and tabloids fabricating stories and basically zero privacy.... Uhhh, no thanks... I'll pass.

I wouldn't mind being moderately famous. It would be pretty neat.

Well, I was in a social media conference today, not as a speaker, but as an attendee, and this gentleman who was also in the audience, at the end of the conference, came to me and told me that he knew me from my guitar videos.

Silly, but it made my day that in a non guitar-centric environment, somehow, whatever little exposure I got from those videos was enough to get to that moment.

But I am not delusional enough to think that this means that I am famous ;)

I'm in the most talented band I've ever been in doing my favorite music. I would like to now take it to the level where we book the large venue shows consistently and people in the region, four or five state area know of our band and come out to see us. I think it's a reachable goal. I don't care if they know my name, I just want them to know the band. That would be a thrill for me.

I was thinking about what it must be like to be, lets say, Brad Pitt. Think about the extra crap you'd have to go through every day. First, even though you're filthy rich, how do you find someone to clean your house? I mean can you imagine hiring a service that brings strangers into your home? Maybe half would grab something from your house if your lucky.

How about simple things like your internet access. You can be sure someone at his service provider is sneaking around to see what Brad Pitt is looking at online.

How do you book a flight? Really. I'm sure rich doesn't equate to necessarily being stupid about your money. Do you try to get on a private jet every time you have to go somewhere? What happens if your driver doesn't show up.. you have to stand there and get attacked by a hundred people until your rescued.

Where do you go to the beach? What about your kids and simple sports events? And on and on and on.

Don't get me wrong everyone likes a little 15 min now and again, but it is nice to walk around and not have anyone know or care who you are too.

There is good famous, and there's bad famous. How would you like to have the whole world make fun of your name?

http://www.weirdasianews.com/2008/04/03/singapore-superhero-batman-bin-suparmen/

Yes, those names are legit names in Singapore. "Bin" means "Son of." So...

Batman. Son of Superman. Oh boy.

I gotta give it to guys like Johnny Depp. He's managed to be famous yet live a pretty awesome life with the lady he loves and their kids on the Med. He makes movies to enrich his family and to satisfy his inner-artist yet he lives with a very small group of locals who embrace him as one of their own. That's the life. The paparazzi get bored of him because he's just so damn awesomely normal.

I'd love for my music to be famous while at the same time personally not being well known. I guess like making music for a film that everyone thought was great but they wouldn't recognize me walking down the street.

It's a real PITA at times. As a well known community activist and community leader I can't do much locally without someone recognizing me. Sometimes it's more like :mob during political election seasons. It's more I'm infamous if you face me politically round here!
Now as far as me being recognized for my playing ---well :facepalm.

I remember working with a client in a very dangerous region where militant groups essentially disliked anyone working for the private corporations. I was onsite 4 weeks at a time. Whenever we'd go out on weekends, we'd have armed escorts around us going everywhere we went -- on the golf course, out to dinner, out to the clubs, etc. Even walking us to the restrooms! I thought darn, celebrities and other well-known folks live their lives like this... shadowed by bodyguards day in and out. What a terrible way to live IMO.

You can be famous and not always have the media hound you. I personally like Maynard James Keenan's technique, he shoots people with a paintball gun.

A few years ago I was with my little sister (who was 7-8 at the time) and some friends I knew from the local news station at the pool. My sis and this other little girl started talking and her new friend says, "My mom interviews rock stars!" and my sis says, "Oh, yeah? Well my big brother IS a rock star!"

That just made my day! Although I've had a taste of it via people approaching me in public, radio interviews, etc, I'm not so sure that I'd want it to get much crazier than that. I love being able to go wherever I want and have fun with my friends.

I was walking through an airport with a gig bag on my back several years ago. A lady came up to me and asked, "Are you famous?"

I said, "Lady you just answered your own question!"

Well, I always thought the better question would be, 'Is there any good reason why I should be famous?'

There are plenty of bad reasons why I could be...like if I murdered someone, ripped a lot of people off, or joined the cast of a reality show. I wouldn't want to be famous for any of those reasons.

So, I guess if I was famous for a really good reason, like I cured AIDS or wrote a #1 song, I'd enjoy that fame.

;)Good point...it seems like nowadays there are plenty of people who don't mind at all being famous for being like, the biggest piece of shit in the Known Universe.

That's a great point. I wouldn't even think of being famous for anything other than music...or maybe for a positive force in the world. If I did something embarrassing enough to get famous for it, and it shamed myself or my family and friends, I'd have to move to another country and change my name.
