Holy crap! The Brazilians will do anything to guarantee a Brazilian winner...

http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/story/33230.html

Jenson Button (http://en.espnf1.com/f1/motorsport/driver/1201.html) escaped without injury following an armed attack on the car carrying the Brit away from the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo.
Button's father John, manager Richard Goddard and trainer Mike Collier were also in the car when the incident occurred after qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
A police driver acted swifty to see off the danger and Button managed to escape and return to his hotel.
Button is quoted as saying: "We were going back from the track and were outside a shanty town and moving slowly on a busy road. The next thing I saw was a man with a gun. Our guy angled the car and floored it.
"That's when we saw six men, all of them brandishing machine-guns. My driver was a legend. It was very scary. I don't know whether they knew who it was they were ambushing. I said, 'Isn't that a gun?' and as soon as I said that, the driver angled the car. My driver bounced off about five cars. We were driving over the top of them."
A statement issued by Button's McLaren team read: "On Saturday evening on the way back from the Interlagos circuit to Morumbi [Sao Paulo], armed would-be assailants made an attempt to approach the car that was carrying Jenson Button.
"Neither Jenson nor the other occupants of the car were hurt. The other occupants were John Button [Jenson's father], Mike Collier [Jenson's physio] and Richard Goddard [Jenson's manager].
"Vodafone McLaren Mercedes had provided both Jenson and team-mate Lewis Hamilton with reinforced armoured vehicles driven by police drivers, who had been trained in avoidance techniques and were armed.
"The police driver of Jenson's vehicle reacted swiftly and, using avoidance techniques, rapidly forced his way through the traffic, taking Jenson and the other occupants of the car immediately away from any danger and back to their hotel.
"The Sao Paulo authorities have also acted efficiently and will be providing additional security to transfer Jenson and other senior Vodafone McLaren Mercedes personnel to the Interlagos circuit for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix."

How did RBR not move Vettel over for Webber?!?!?!?!?! Ahhh!! They are going to blow it for the both of them and hand it to Alonso, and Alonso had that look on his face during the post race interview like "yeah, I got this". Doh!

And why in the world can we not clear the backmarkers on a safety car?!?! It was primed to have a four way battle with the top four contenders and instead there are six cars between Alonso and Webber and four cars between Alonso and Hamilton. Crazy. I really hope they change that rule. Hell, even throw in the lucky dog concept for $hits and giggles.

If he wants to get pissed at someone, he should watch a replay of the Korean race.

Funny how those 7 points Alonso gained via 'team orders' in Germany come into play, isn't it?
Couldn't agree more about the safety car rules. With all the spec. tweaking Bernies' done in the last decade to improve the racing, you'd think....

Red Bull have had the best car all year, so deserve the title they won today. Well done!
Webber knows that had the team chosen to go for the title by using the same methods as Ferrari, he would be in a better position, but had he not driven into the wall, he would also be in a much better position.
You make your own luck...
Still, hope he wins next race out. Of course, if Alonso is second...it won't help, and that is why he's a bit peeved..

Happiest man on the planet today has to be King Bernie. Championship will be decided at the last race of the season, AND in his new frontier, not some shabby old track in Europe or the Americas.

His new frontier where cars that are 3 seconds a lap faster still can`t overtake.
Where actual racing is to be avoided at all costs.

A race without spectacle. (Apart from the achitecture)

V-E-T-T-E-L, what a great race today, and big props to the Renault drivers/team for driving hard and punishing Ferrari/Alonso for a horrible decision. I understand considering Webber's moves, but with a strong car and great driver, you would think Ferrari/Alonso would have just ran their own race. From qualitying a Webber-Vettel 1-2 was obviously unlikely.

Congrats to Seb.

I am one happy man today! Not only did Alonso not win, but he was completely and utterly frustrated by Petrov! And to see the Jensen and Lewis on the podium was a perfect finale!

Job well done by Vettel!

Well done Vettel, on balance with his ten poles and five wins he deserved it. Just so glad that Alonso didn't get anything, in the end he got what he deserved, nada and did you see him waving his fist at Petrov on the wind down lap like it was his fault for not letting him past. Fernando, if you are reading this it is only the other Ferrari driver who has to get out of your way, "you" have to overtake and pass the rest!!!!.

Not only a terrible track for passing, but one where there is no consequence for going off track at the majority of corners.

It would be nice to see the finale back at Brazil.

If Alonso haddn't pitted so early would he have been better off? He pitted from 4th and was never that close ever again? He was worried about Weber jumping him, but overall wasn't that a mistake when so many others came out ahead of him by staying out longer?

In hindsight it is clear to everyone that Ferrari threw away the WDC because of this. They *should* have seen that pitting him would bring him out behind Petrov and Rosberg (who had already pitted) on a track where it is nearly impossible to pass.

In the heat of the moment everyone missed this. His radio chatter when he came back out was basically "everything is under control". It even took several laps before the Speed crew realized what had happened. Everyone was focused on Webber.

Not a mistake that would have happened in the Schumacher/Brawn/Todt era.

Congratulations to Vettel and Red Bull.

Shame that it had to happen on a dead-boring and personality-less track. Yet another "We want to be Monaco!" crap spaghetti bowl. I predict Austin will be equally dreary (IF it happens...), Tilke will assume that elevation change = exciting corners.

Very happy to see Seb win it and the Macca boys on the podium. I feel bad for Fernando, but not for longer than a few seconds. Webber was my main horse in this race, but he just didn't show up today. Seb went out there and won it like a champion.

Tilke will be adding this brand of track excitement to the new Texas course- I agree, need other ideas for a passing course.I would say,for this one race, it was most enjoyable watching Fernando(ferrari) stewing and the championship slipping away, wish Webber had done better.

Congrats to Vettel and RBR - they pretty much dominated this season.

Webber didn't show up - not at all - and it cost him dearly.

2011 should be another great season, as I'm sure Maclaren and Ferrari will be ready for the RBR chassis...

I don't follow F1 like I used to, maybe I missed a rule change. Is passing illegal in F1 now ( except for passing the backmarkers) ?
That was a very boring race to watch yesterday…. first one I've, um, tried to watch from start to finish in a long time.
Very, very boring racing, boring new tracks.
I don't understand it anymore. Bernie has lost my spouse and I - we used to look forward to watching races on Sunday morning!!
Sorry that Webber did not win the title. Glad Alonzo did not win the title.

Pretty soon you can have this sport all to yourself.

I think that the poster is referring to Alonso's hand gesture to Petrov at the end of the race. Alonso was expecting Petrov to move to the side so that Alonso could pass. Alonso would never do it for another driver and so Petrov didn't give him any gifts either.

Yup, Petrov was fighting for position and had NO obligation to let Alonso through.

Plus, I sure Renault would prefer Vettel to win the Championship, as he had a Renault engine powering his Red Bull.

Props to Alonso and Ferrari for continuing to develop an indifferent car through the season. They took a totally non competitive car at the beginning of the season and made a serious WC run. Red Bull barely pulled it off despite the fact that they had the far superior car all year. The great drivers shine through when all is said and done.

Sooo to pass the break sans TV, I just re-installed Grand Prix Legends (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_Legends) with the way-cool new all-in-one installer (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=3076). Ya gotta pony up five bucks for an old GPL disc before you use it, but even today GPL is an outstanding race sim, now for dirt cheap.

With the installer, you get the game all patched and upgraded, latest graphics, GPLEA (Remember them?) cars, and a few choice utilities like GEM++ (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=3076). Chief among the utils is any of the rasterizer editors--you can tell GPL your multi-screen setup is one humongous row of pixels, edit the Field of View angle to 180, and run humble little GPL in psuedo-wide-screen. The twistier tracks are a whole different beast when you can actually look through the corners.

Be sure to check the Sports Car (http://tcmodgpl.speedgeezers.net/) carset while you're at it--not the flashiest eye candy in the world but still a good road trip, physics engines pretty doggone good, and if you have a jones for an old GT40 or a Chapparal, it's definitely a good ride. (Or one of those red things...) The turbo-era-ish Thundercars are okay I suppose, but the original '67's are a far more interesting challenge and translate much better to real-world street-style driving IMHO. (Those turbo's didn't actually drive that way did they?!) Haven't run any of the '65's or other years...reviews welcome...I'm still trying to master the '67 Eagle and Lotus, quite frankly.

Oh yeah...if you've been away from GPL for the last ten years, you really need to peruse The Alternative Track Database (http://gpltd.bcsims.com/), still ticking away after all this time and getting bigger. Over 250 tracks now, or so we're told. Full-length Targa Florio just came out. Eye-popping in the style of IOM, great drive.

Race Sim Central (http://www.racesimcentral.com/forum/forum.php) and The Sim Racing Mirror Zone (http://srmz.net/) seem to the new twin epicenters for the latest fixes and hacks, esp the wraparound thing. And for those of you who remember Eagle Woman (http://eaglewoman.rscsites.org/gpl/index.htm), her website is still up, largely un-touched except for a few new links.

Nostalgia...

Oh man, that takes me back. Before TGP I was hip deep in the RSC forums and on there all day every day and into racing sims big, GPL, rFactor, LFS, netKar Pro, etc...I think I need to fire up GPL and give Spa a whirl again. My absolute favorite is the base game driving a Lotus around Zandvoort, just an awesome combo!

I have an old Indy car game that runs on DOS. This has all the tracks from the early 90's, a mix of of oval and road courses. I have to find someone that I know who is tech smart to teach this monkey (me) how to load it on an XP and run it. No matter how may times I tried to practice the pass Zanardi did on Herta at Laguna Seca my car would spin out or I would lose a position.

BTW, what's everybody's take on the flex-wing for next year? Montezelmo has reason to be concerned, I think...done poorly, this could well be the double-diffuser all over again. But stranger yet...a following distance limit? Wonder what kind of enforcement telemetry they'll need for that?

You mean the old Indy Car Racing? You might find it on Amazon or EBay, but there's another approach...Dave Noonan's Track Converter. (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1217) People used it to convert Indy Car Racing tracks to GPL format, and then you could run them in GPL. IIRC The Alternative Track Database has the conversion tracks all GPL'd and ready for download. Tons better racing than the old ICR, and it'll be XP-ready.

Otherwise, try googling for a DOS-workaround, like this page (http://www.dosgames.com/xphints.php).

You're welcome, yes, yes and yes!

Watching the F1 Debrief on Speed, and all the past races, brought back the fact just how amazing RBR was this year and how they easily could've swept both titles early on if they hadn't screwed themselves so many times.

2011 - Ferrari, McLaren, and RBR will be much more evenly matched and Mercedes will also be a front runner as well as Renault. I hope...

The 2011 entry list is out with TBA's at all but Merc, McLaren, Ferrari, Lotus, Sauber, and RBR. Figured Schu would stay at Merc, but for how long? Nice to see Reubens coming back thus far. Renault's keeping Kubica, no surprise there. As Klein observed, unless you're a top driver in a fast car, you basically need an oil company or a small country to bankroll you if you want a ride.

But who the heck gets to be Lotus this year...Lotus or Team Lotus or Group Lotus or what? Virgin is registered as Marussia Virgin...hmp. And so the silly season fun begins... :)

There hasn't been this much top team continuity in years, that's what will make 2011 potentially even more competitive than 2010. But it's going to come down to which designer can best accomodate new Pirellis, no double diffuser, no F-duct....my money is on Newey given his track record but I think McLaren will be right there.
