I like some of her stuff. Don't really get the weird stuff but I guess thats just pop dance stuff. I wonder if she will do like a John Mayer type thing were she breaks in with this freaky stuff and then she sits down and writes and works on Nora Jones type stuff?

Its a shame that she has to do all the dancing/over the top stuff to sell records/get attention.

If she would just do songs like this, musicians will love her, but she would be obscure and unheard of to the rest of the world.

Uhm....Maybe she likes to dance?

To the OP.......

As far as ending debates about the merits of artists.....

It will never happen here.

You have guitarists here who will never step beyond amateur simply because they don't have the ears to be a musician for whatever reason.

Then you have guitarists who happen to be musicians and, although they may not prefer or like a certain style/genre, they have put in the work, have been around the block, and know what musicianship and performance is. It's hard work, most have the humility to respect that.

Thanks for posting :aok

I'm of the mind that she had to have quite a bit of talent to get where she is -no matter what hype and marketing is behind her.

You don't have to like the music but appreciate the talent.

Whenever I get it in my head that so and so is a 'no talent' and all hype I make it a point to seek out some live youtube or better yet catch a live show.

More often than not I get a new respect for them.. Like Robben Ford, after endless posts and discussions on here about him I made up my mind that I couldn't stand him.
But.. after I checked out some of his sideman stuff I decided that he was a really talented guitar player.

This is what I don't get about these "debates" - even if it could be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Lady Gaga has no talent, whatever 'talent' is anyway, what's she supposed to do once we reach that verdict?

I did a double take to one of her videos and swear she was playing the "Death on Two Legs" intro, sold me right there. That is my favorite Queen song. I think she was influenced for sure.

Funny...it did me too...and I was gonna say that.

I couldn't quite put my finger on why, though...a tiny bit of similarity in the vocal style. Nyro definitely had more of a 'Brill Building with a touch of Broadway' vibe than this, which was more straight contemporary pop

And then I realized - it's the haircut...and then I thought -nah, best not to say anything then...

I just don't see how it compares at all to the Crap she is spewing today and her looks. If you want to judge a person by how much money they have , then great.........yeah she's successful. The public will buy anything you place in front of them. Reality shows are proof of that. But by talant and songwriting, that girl now is just a shell of what she once was. A serious response: I actually do care about talent even when I don't like someone's stuff for several reasons, including that sometimes - just sometimes - when I'm convinced someone truly is talented, I like to revisit my
dislike to determine if perhaps the reason I'm missing out is my own small-mindedness. If so, it gives me the option to expand my horizons by opening my mind.

Even if I do I don't see the point of trying to sell it to those who don't.
Sell, no, but to be fair to the OP, he's not selling it to you. He's giving it away. There are worst traits in life than wanting to share things you like with others, especially when they're the ones who click into your thread. ;)

You're missing the point. It's not about liking it or not. I don't care. It's certainly not in my daily rotation because stylistically it is most definitely not my thing. With that being said If you really knew what being a musician is you'd at least respect others for working hard instead of slagging it.

Jerry Garcia famously said about his band, "The Grateful Dead are like licorice. Not everyone likes licorice but the people who do really do."

I don't interpret RM's post as a slam at all. I think it's a legit observation. There's a whole lotta projecting going on in this thread. Why not simply accept there's an entertainer out there whose career goals and musical interests differ with yours while matching up well with a huge segment of the listening/viewing/buying public?

And Nora Jones (who I like alot, BTW) can do her thing for her audience!

Yes, kinda like this thread.... I stuck with it just long enough to find something worth reading. This also brings me back to what it was about music that I fell in love with as a kid. As my tastes become more refined I have to be careful not to assume I have nothing to learn from or be inspired by outside of what I already feel comfortable with. I think this may be how many become stagnated musically.

You may as well give up with OldSchool He enters into threads just to spew ignorance and to stir things up. The other day he went into a thread about the Grateful Dead and went off on their audience calling them a bunch of homeless bums that pissed all over HIS city.

Don't waste your keystrokes on OldSchool.

At least I tried to make amends on that thread and put it behind me. You felt the need to keep it going on. Believe me I could have kept that train going Bro......but out of respect for my man Jon Silberman who I have Mucho respect for I let it go. I suggest you do the same . You do not want me opening the can of worms that is the Deadheads . Remember John Rambo's Famous words to the Sheriff in the first Blood Flick? LET IT GO. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon12.gifhttp://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon14.gif

Really?

This is probably a waste of time, but you are in the Sound Hound Lounge, where we (musicians) have "General discussion about anything related to music."

But I think you're aware of that going in.

Absolutely!! Thats exactly what I was doing. But apparently only one opinion is allowed. You guys want to prove that your so open minded........in truth your just the opposite. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon13.gif My point was that if you are on a guitar related Forum don't be so appalled when you get people that dig guitar orientated music and not electronica psycho babble .

...yea, but you usually play the role of the cop who was the entire cause for Rambo's rampage, he wanted to arrest Rambo for vagrancy in backwater USA (to quote Col. Troutman)...he fell out of the helicopter like a dumbass...bro...:boxer:D:p

His deputy fell out of the Helicopter. Very bad anology. But.........if you would like to pick this back up over at the Dead thread Just let me know. I graciously left but can drag the legacy of Jerry and his Brethern as deep down as you make me.

...I confused the 2 dickweed sheriffs...sorry, bro! I think if you were to say some of the things you type in these threads to people...like a lounge or pub, you would probably not make as many ridiculous comments...because people wouldn't want to talk to you...you talk about your Mexican food bowel movements and crapping all the time...sometimes your posts are disgusting...it's not very classy to talk about poo-pooing and farting so much...just sayin'

...maybe try a more imaginative theme when you dislike something...

Thank You.Apparently I'm not allowed to have that same opinion. :dunno

Ahhhh. Thanks for your honesty. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon14.gif So he said everything you wanted to say , but you felt the need to agree with him attacking me , so you posted it again. Thats all well and good.........but on one hand all of you are preaching freedom of speech, to be free to perform and express yourself . And then all of you condemn me for expressing mine.

The comments were never attacking , and I always gave reasons and explained as to why I felt the way I did. Not to mention this is a GUITAR based Forum. So you would think you would get some people that are interested in GUITAR related music. I think your aware of that going in.

Whatever floats your boat. :bkw

You really seem to have a way of ticking people off...I don't think I've seen a conversation recently that you didn't get someone going.

Sometimes its better just to back up and start over...

ORLY?!?!?!?

Ummmmm...

1. my simple personal view is that if her music was still what was displayed in that first video, I'd be a fan.
2. the stuff she produces today is of no value to me, period.

Too bad its 2009 and she is just a shell of that once beautiful young Lady. :dunno

I just don't see how it compares at all to the Crap she is spewing today and her looks. ....... I would hate to see her end up in a rehab.

Doesn't matter if you take it out of the Toliet bowl and serve it with Lobster..........Crap is still Crap!!

just got flushed along with todays Lunch special

However I still think Lady Gag sux like a Crack whore with the Navy in Town.

Shitty material is shitty material.

Lets just say you could bury that video in the garden and you would probably have a Fine crop grow as a result..........

I've eaten at the all you can eat Mexican buffet and flushed better things down the bowl then that Video..............http://www.thegearpage.net/board/images/icons/icon13.gif

:huh

So let's review.

Mojocaster = a simple, reasonably stated "I don't dig it". Cool.

Old School = A barrage of vile character assassination and ugly spewage, with an unfortunate scatological fetish.

Agree, but what is there to argue about?

That part of being a musician is respect for others hard work in this very unforgiving business whether you dig their form of self expression or not.

That is the point.

Again, I totally agree. I just don't see that as debatable. She's doin it, slaggers here are not.

I guess the "debate" is more about people not having that respect for a fellow musician. To me that kind of disrespect clearly shows they have no idea what they are talking about.
