Next week my wife is due with our first child. Several friends have bought nice cigars. I'm not much of a cigar smoker so I don't know what the process is. Do I go outside the hospital and light one up not long after the birth? Do I wait until later in the day and meet some friends in a bar with pictures of the baby? Do I do it a few days later when things have calmed down? What's a recommended tradition?

Reminds me of a line that Groucho Marx SUPPOSEDLY said on his game show, You Bet Your Life. He had a woman contestant who stated she had 11 children. Groucho, taken aback, said, "My Goodness, 11 children?!?" The woman said, "What can I tell you, Groucho--I love my husband." Groucho says "Ma'am, I love my cigar, too, but I take it out of my mouth once in a while."

The next time you get together with those friends. About twelve years from now.

While you are holding/feeding said baby.
Disclaimer: Do not actually do this. You will make the baby smell bad.

As soon as they take the baby out of the delivery room you light one up and say...."that was a great job honey " :thud

You can't afford any cigars. You need that money to pay for diapers.

As soon after the "hand the Dad the kid and let him take him to the nursery" part is over. Take a bathroom break and slip outside with your Dad. Believe me, you'll deserve a good smoke after all that "birthin" stuff.

It's common knowledge that you smoke a cigar in the delivery room to cover the smell of the placenta.

Or you can wait until you take the baby home. Thats what we did with my first grandchild.

You don't have to actually smoke the cigars. The custom is for the new father to hand out cigars to friends, as a celebration of his good fortune.

Usually this happens right after birth.
While you are at the bar having shots with your friends, it is customary to get a phone call from your wife right after she's done giving birth. The man should then ask if it's a boy or girl, congratulate the wife on a job well done, and reassure her that you'll be there to pick her up tomorrow or the next day.
After the phone call, you order another round of shots for your buddies, and hand out the cigars. If you are in an establishment where it is acceptable, celebratory lap dances are sometimes appropriate.
Tradition is important. Be sure not to leave any steps out. While women often try to make changes to this time-honored process, you should stick to your guns. She'll appreciate it in the long run.:D
