I'm studying to become a teacher, and I was talking to this girl in my class. She told me that she's 18 years old (I'm 24) and we talked for a while about music and stuff. Then she showed me her iPod and I found that she had every Stevie Ray Vaughan album in there.. and then I saw that she had ALBERT KING, early Pink Floyd and Hendrix in there. Awsome! A similar situation happened when I was invited home to my ex girlfriend the first time. She showed me her record collection and I found that she had "WIRED" by Jeff Beck, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac "Live" and lots of Zeppelin albums. It's so great to see that there are young girls with good taste in music nowdays!!

Girls are just people, man. Some people have good taste in music, some don't. Besides, "good taste" is a matter of personal opinion anyway.

I'm a musician and I care about music and but finding out her tastes in music was really the last thing I got around to when I met my wife

So you're the one who determines what good taste is or isn't.
BTW, my daughter who just turned 21 has the most eclectic music collection I've ever seen, which includes SRV, Jeff Beck, Zep, Bonamassa... she also has tons of stuff I'd never heard before that is amazing.

Also, liking whats popular with the middle aged population here at TGP absolutely does not equal having good taste.

See, I was the opposite! One of my first questions was always about music with women. Even if she didn't listen to what I did, she still needed some sort of justified reason for diggin' it
I lucked out though...although my wife gets a bit bored with Vai and other guitar instrumental music and her iPod is plagued with boy bands, she's always making up for it by introducing me to fantastic artists and bands I may have never heard of otherwise.

Absolutely. Maybe this should be linked to the "sexist" thread. The OP has just become the latest poster boy for being sexist....not to mention ageist.

To each their own, and all that good stuff ... but I also think it's a little weird for an 18 year old to be into that stuff. Just my opinion.
As far as relationships go, music is about the last thing I care about.
They sure do and I even married one of them. As proof she thinks my playing is pretty crappy so I know she has good taste! ;)

Its important that two people share a lot in common if they intend a relationship to last, so its exciting to meet someone with such great taste in music.
Music is very meaningful to people who truly love it and someone's favorite stuff says things about their past and aesthetic. A person with that, intelligence, kindness, and a physical attraction could keep you busy for the rest of your life.

I'm not looking for an argument, but I wondered....why is this weird? Unusual maybe but not weird.

I hear you on that! I highly respect my wife's opinion in music and always run my new material by her. She's what keeps me from getting too wrapped up in the guitar work and keeps my focus on the vibe and meaning of the song as a whole.
Its cool that some of you all could look past music when choosing your mate...its just too important to me to let it slide by.

That's actually a bad sign for an 18 year-old girl to be into that stuff. You'll learn why later in life my son.

In my experience with the kids at the college, I found they have very diverse taste and do not always fit any stereotype.
I helped one young lady, the proverbial drop dead beautiful blond with her Macbook as she was having problems consolidating her Itunes library. I saw Hendrick, Clapton, early Allman Brothers, SRV, Pat Methany, etc.
I foolishly commented "So your boyfriend is a guitar player...." She said "No. I really like blues and jazz guitar." My immediate thought was to ask if her mother and father were still happily married, as I'd like to meet her mother(!) I refrained.
She commented that is was cool that I was "a guitar player who looked like a lawyer" as her dad "looks like a guitar player, but is a lawyer."
I know it is easy to stereotype the young generation but there are some amazing kids out there.

Most of my favorite music has been written and performed by women. If I were banished to a desert island with ONLY music made by women, I'd be cool for 50 years.

You mean like the same ones that are screaming "sexism!" over this thread? :dunno
Sounds to me like the guy just met a cool person, wasn't expecting them to have the same taste in music, and felt a little fuzzy. What's wrong with that?
Let's face it...there ARE stereotypes and we are all victims of them!
And I completely agree with the college crowd!. When I was overseas in the AF, I leaned on my college friends to keep me up to date on what was happening in the music world!

I like lLues first off and my wife likes Alternative.
I jokingly tell her that I like music and she likes the alternative to it.
Not neccesary that both like the same music but it would be nice.

Wow - this thread has made me aware that I'm f_cking up in the literature department also. I was born in '58, and most of my favorite novels were written in the 1920s. ;)

Face it. A good lookin' chick with good taste in music is better than a good lookin' chick with bad taste in music. Well, that's it..
And.. sexistic? c'mon.. Don't be silly.. :p

Nice backpedal pal. Your original statement was:
"Girls with good taste in music DO EXIST!!"
This suggests that it's somehow really rare for women to have good taste in music. That's what people are suggesting is sexist.

C'mon guys--the dude is only 24. How much wisdom do you expect him to have? (oops--ageist!!) He's stoked 'cause he met a chick (dang--sexist!!) who digs the same kind of old-school music he does and that many of us do. I say RIGHT ON! Go for it, 24 year old dude! I remember getting a major woody the first time I met a chick who was into Hendrix--it seemed incredibly rare to me at the time. Does that make me sexist? Oh wait, I already am...

You'll learn soon enough...or maybe you won't, but if you crave to write great songs, its an essential life lesson. Most of the best music ever written and performed has been about this very situation.

Listen, dude, I'm 23 and I listen to alot of stuff that goes way back before you do. This has nothing to do with old vs. new. It has to do with the sad idea around here that any sort of blues rock from or descended from the "classic rock" era always equals good.

Hmm, interesting thread. Something did just occur to me. Perhaps the music on her iPod was given to her by her Dad, older Brother, Cousin etc. Did she say that she was really into a lot of that stuff? Ya never know, she could've gotten it as a gift, and whoever was the giver loaded it up for her with whatever they had on their drive. It could happen.
