I'm either humor-challenged or hyper-progressive because I don't find many of these examples necessarily contradictory any more than I would find sweet and sour chicken contradictory.

P.S. Anyone who would proffer "good country" as contradictory should probably try to get out a bit more.

it can be done though, and I intend to do it. Herbie Hancock's Thrust is almost like progressive funk of sorts. Actual Proof has a slightly shifting meter at the end of the head and there are lots of melody lines and sections like in prog, but its the funkiest thing the universe has every known. I guess that's why they call it Jazz-Funk though.

death jazz from the first page was pretty funny. You could say that Coltrane's Live in Japan band fits that bill. The beats are pretty psychopathic. I love Pharoah Sanders to death but pretty much all my friends say he sounds like dying animals, and a friend of mine who is a big metal fan said some time back when I played that for him was "its like death metal jazz". haha I personally don't think its "death jazz" though.
