Fix it yourself and be in for a good surprise....
There was a long thread about it here a while back that you might want to check out.
Oh, and for the store bought stuff, I have found that it's hard to beat Sabra.

i've had some on a couple of occasions and it didn't do much for me. Its not bad though. I'm not crazy about it like some of my friends are.

If you're lucky enough to have a Lebanese market/deli near you - go get some fresh home-made hummus, tabbouleh, and some felafel's and pita bread. That's some good eats!

I make it often in my food processor, absolutely love it. The key ingredient is tahini, a paste made from sesame seeds. It's not always easy to find.

Hummus rules. Eat it with bread as grains are a protein compliment (have the amino acids legumes are weak in and visa versa) to legumes (the chickpeas in hummus).
And don't forget the babagahoush!

I've eaten in almost daily for years. You can get it at CostCo around here.
It is the gold standard for food processors. I've tried in my Vitamix and some other machines and they just can't do it. What food processor do you have?

The best I've had was making it from a recipe from The Moosewood Cookbook.

I used to dine at Moosewood while in Ithaca for concerts while a student at nearby SUNY at Binghamton!

I've got the Cuisinart Elite 16 cup which is exclusive to Williams-Sonoma. The wife insisted on this one and I'm glad she did. It's a 1000 watt machine so it does the hummus no problem.

I love me some hummus! There is a little mediterranean deli here in DFW that makes the most awesome garlic hummus, I've never found any better. As for store brands, Sabra (Roasted Red Pepper is my favorite) is hard to beat.

I use Hummus instead of Mayo etc. for sandwiches. Also great with tortilla chips (as a dip). I also like to make panini sandwiches and use the Hummus as a "dipping spread.
Me likey!

The original/first Moosewood cookbook has the recipe for hummus right next to the recipe for babaganoush. I always ended up roasting up some eggplant and putting that into the hummus. A great mix....

Several brands of store-bought hummus use some kind of oil instead of tahini. Not too good...

I hope you'll explore the other things this wonderful cuisine has to offer. Most lebanese markets sell a garlic paste made with olive oil, garlic and lemon....you'll want to put it on everything...

Could totally live on the stuff ...
Can easily eat it with a spoon ..
Love to drizzle Olive Oil over it and have a yellow chili pepper near by,
to burst even more flavor into the mix ...

I don't like the athenos brand.
I either make my own or buy some local stuff (http://www.holylandbrand.com/).

Agreed.
Garlic pita chips work well.
Absolutely loooooooove it! Mind you, if it's made right (tonnes of garlic) you'll never taste the garlic in those girlie-man pita chips! :aok

Wouldn't know... I'm pretty sure I've never had packaged hummus in my life... I've been fortunate to have family and friends with very broad tastes in home-prepared cool food. :D

More TGP-approved hummus than you'll have pita to shake at!

Just started eating it recently. Haven't made any myself but I've tried Tribe and Sabra. I really like the Sabra garlic hummus with fresh pita chips.
