Man I wish the season finale wasn't this soon. Love this show and wish it had a longer season. What will happen with Trinity and Dexter now? Oops. Same bat time, same bat channel...

I can't wait....but, like Lost, I'll be sad when it goes away for the season...(or forever, in the case of Lost).

My wife is an avid fan and I have enjoyed watching from the beginning. But. Am I the only viewer who believes the writing this season is declining fast? Dexter is behaving far out of character (killing the photographer on zero evidence; not calling the police to assist in rescuing the 10 year old boy, even though his own batting average is in the dumps), even long after he understands that Trinity is no role model and can't be spared on that basis; other characters behave absurdly (Dex: "I dinged a guy's car. Can you find the owner?" Cop: "Sure, Dex, we won't run the plates and tell you who he is. Instead, I'll have all the patrol cars keep an eye out, so I can let you know where he is driving and maybe you can catch up with him") in order to further the plot. The Trinity story is engaging, but the show is falling apart around it. Best thing I can say about this season is that Dexter's monologues, which used to make me cringe, have largely disappeared.

I am a big fan of Dexter even buying the books to read but have to agree with you that season 4 is not up to par even though it is still better than 90% of other TV shows and John Lithgow is amazing as Trinity. In the first three seasons it was very seldom that I found my self thinking that is a bit farfetched but in season 4 I have found myself thinking a few times that he has gone a good bit out of character. I think they should maybe stop now and people will remember it as a classic along the same lines as The Wire, rather than milking it like the producers of Lost, Prison Break, Heroes have done and are still doing.

We've been a fan of Dexter since season 1. We started watching it because figured it had to be good since it starred Michael C Hall from Six Feet Under. Six Feet is another excellent series that as soon as one episode ended, we were already looking forward to the next week's show. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it, and there are 4 or 5 seasons to keep you busy. The final scene in the last show of the series is by far the most powerful scene I've ever seen on television or screen.

We can't wait...they've done a GREAT job of building it up. I can't say that I agree that this season has suffered. I've actually enjoyed this season just as much, if not more, than the previous ones. The first 3 were all about the past, this season seems to be more about his current state of mind.

He seems to be going out of character because he's got multiple personalities... the dude is abby-normal, yo...
Best show ever! I think this is the best season yet!

How do you all see the show ending when it comes to an end? My wife thinks it will end with Dexter turning "normal". I think that would be the worst thing ever. I think it will end with Dexter getting murdered....maybe by Deb, who learns what a monster he is and has to take him out to protect society...just like Dexter does? That would be good and ironic, no?

I found an interview where they said the final episode is entitled, "The Escape." That could go many different ways! I don't think Dexter will become "normal." I'm curious as to if Trinity will get away at the last minute...and will continue to linger through into the next season.

I saw a short preview where Deb confronts him about being the CI's son...so intense! I'm just wondering if she puts together that the Ice Truck Killer was his brother...
I've got to stop looking at this thread. I've never been so worked up over seeing a show!

I think that the writer's have purposely had him leave clues/loose ends all over this season, and would love to have the final season be his capture/trial.
As likable a guy as he is, he's also a serial killer and he's killed an innocent man. They're not going to let him get off.

the actors have said that the finale is going to change the show at it's core. that dexter will become much more dangerous next season.
i'm thinking someone close to him dies, and he goes insane.
What an ending! Can't wait for next season.

It had to happen.
Now if they can just fix the Batista-Laguerta filler in similar fashion the show will really be back on track.

Just saw it over my lunch break...HOLY SMOKES! As soon as he got that msg from Rita my wife and I both looked at each other like, "He went there before leaving!" It was just a hunch, we didn't actually think they'd end it that way though!
Whew...the suspense is going to kill me until next Fall. What a brilliant show!

yeah!
that was about the coldest ass ending of a season (of any show) ever.
my drummer watched it at a dexter party with one of the writers of the show...
he just told me they were going back and forth all season if they were gonna do that...Rita only found out about it by episode 11 (!)...the writer said her agent called the producers all pissed off...classic. what a great ending....keeping us (once again) on the edge of our fricken seats!

I really liked Rita, a real shocker. I'm now wondering how Dexter is going to explain Trinity hitting his household in episode 1 of next season.
I disagree that the writing had gone downhill this season as I found season 3 somewhat lessened (for me) after seasons 1 and 2.
This season was the best for me. Lithgow had plenty to do with it....

This was my thought. He's been seen with trinity everywhere(including at the PD), so it'll be interesting to see how he'll explain all this.

what gets me is where are they going to take this next season? most shows the answer would be revenge, but dexter already killed trinity. dexter needs to have longer seasons. there is too much wait time between seasons.

Amazing finale....I was a little worried when he was saying to himself that he wanted to change....but with that ending, I can't imagine he can now. I wonder if anything else will materialize now that Deb knows his past...?

I don't know... so much about the ending just doesn't make sense.
When did Arthur kill Rita? When did Dexter catch up with Arthur? Are we supposed to believe that Harrison just sat in a pool of blood for hours while Dexter killed Arthur, cut up his body and dumped it in the ocean?
I love the show, and the Rita character has been really annoying over the last couple of seasons, but this was just sloppy.
Agreed. My partner was joking that "we" killed Rita as we were hoping she would just go away. I don't watch a lot of TV and this was my first season of Dexter but i'm hooked now.

Arthur killed Rita sometime after he discovered Deb was living in his old apartment. Dexter took the oil cap off the stang while it was still in the garage and followed Arthur from the garage to the out of town road... when he saw the stang smoking, he killed his lights and coasted up behind him. As far as Harrison goes, what else would he do?
As for next season, Dexter can say that Trinity was looking for Deb at Miami-Dade, couldn't get close to her or Dexter for the kill, and went after Rita as the next best thing before skipping town.
I think the kids will go live with the grandparents, which will free up Dexter's time for nocturnal activities. Deb will slowly catch on to him, setting up the inevitable confrontation. Quinn will catch on too, but will side with Dex (the parallels between Dexter and Doakes were not fully explored IMO).

Actually, Batista saw Trinity with Dexter at the police station (he just didn't know it was Trinity yet), so the explanation Dex might give would be that Trinity was looking for revenge against the police who had ruined his "normal" life , he met Dex, saw his name on his badge, and went on to kill his wife afterwards.

Well! Phew.
Season 1 solidly > Season 4 > Season 2 by a smidge overall > WAY better than Season 3
What an ending. Couldn't believe it! Plenty wrong with it (and the season) as others have touched on (sure, TRG weren't at the back door while Dex escapes into the shed and coffin...uh, family, wouldn't you mention that Kyle Butler was in the house?)
Prediction that she may still be around flashback-daddy style (especially given any agent fuss as described previously!). Also - even though I think she was - they have left the door open that she was not necessarily a Trinity victim (maybe while Dex was taking out the trash she was waiting, and waiting...and then headed to the bathroom...). Not sure how they are going to be able to reconcile the whole Dex's bro is the ITC thing but will wait and see!
It's going to be too long before we (hopefully) return to TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT!!!!!

Rita fits in w/the Trinity pattern - he'sd already snagged the 10YO boy, and she was a mom, the right age, with 2 kids...
There were a TON of loose ends, this season:
Quinn saw Dexter at the bar w/the photographer. He's going to be on to him next season.
Dexter's hair/prints will be on the coffin at Trinity's house.
Trinity's familiy will ID him, and wonder WTF?
I'm thinking that next season will be about the connecting of the dots and ultimate arrest, and then if there's a sixth, it will be the trial and aftermath...

...Dexter's hair/prints will be on the coffin at Trinity's house...
Wouldn't this be easily explained with him just touching it without gloves("whoops my bad" kinda thing)? I agree with you about the loose ends though, Dexter seemed to slip alot this season.
