The stock speaker (non-alnico) sounds great, actually I wonder what the specs are on these (dB/m)...

But what speakers have you tried with them and really liked? How does a vintage 30 sound? Eminence flavours? Thanks

Vintage 30s sound horrible with Vox amps. If you want the classic, normal sound of the AC30, get two Celestion Blues. Nothing else sounds exactly like that. Some things get close (Eminence Red Fang for instance).

Weber ceramic Blue Dogs (Celestion Blue clones)!

Another vote for Blues, though G12H30's didn't sound too bad either, especially overdriven.

ALWAYS alnico blues. WGS makes a killer clone for blues. but it's always blues if you want that vox sound.

WGS Black and Blue. Dave and co are great to work with.

I like the combo of one Weber Alnico Blue Dog 30 watt and one Weber Silver Bell Alnico 30 watt. Good warmth and smooth break-up.

Blues are great, but I dig Golds more :-)

I've got two blues in my amp, and I'm very happy with it. They sound better every day. The wharfdale speakers aren't the same, but are modeled on a greenback i think - they've got a similar wattage, sensitivity and frequency response.

Alnico Blue or speakers based off of it or a Greenback. If you have an AC30 i've heard good things about Blue + Greenback

2x Blues or
1 Blue + 1 G12H30, in series

Believe it or not a 2x12 or 4x12 closed back cab with G12M greenback reissues sounds unreal.

Vintage 30s sound horrible with Vox amps.

So in your experience, what was horrible about the sound?

I'm not that familiar with the vox sound. Can you recommend me some songs that would sound like a vox with celestion blues. I know Brian May used Vox amps and I believe Tom Petty. Someone give me a song with the quintessential "VOX" sound. Thanks.

I am a little eccentric:
http://homepage.mac.com/pfflam/.Pictures/GIT/VOX-Front1.jpg

I put a JBL in my AC15 - I did a whole slew of mods (bright switch, tone cut knob, a Mallory cap, new reverb, and a real MM choke) . . . I like it, then again I can't afford a Blue
But I recently discovered that it sounds ultra fantastic, or should I say MORE ultra fantastic when I run both the JBL and These two closed back Victor Cabs each sporting a WGS V30s

I think the V30s mix with the JBL in just the right way

So you run your AC15 with V30's? How does that sound? Im not looking for THE VOX SOUND, simply a good hard rock tone..

I think it sounds good . . . but what I like in music is often sneered at - sorta outside stuff - but in the case of the V30s (these are the WSG version) I think the clean crisp brightness of the JBL offsets any crunch from the V30s - maybe they meet in the middle -maybe where a CBlue would be?!

In either case I haven't spent much time with them . . . . My Showman is having problems and on a whim I popped the Vox on top of the cab and split the output to all of the speakers - I'm glad I did it because it really does sound good . . . I'll report further once I get some time to really play the rig at volume for a sustained amount

Vintage 30's sound shrill and harsh with a non-pleasing upper midrange spike, when used with an AC30. It's possible that's the sound you want but you can't make any of the classic AC30 sounds with V30s.

A few classic AC30 sounds: Everything on the first two Beatles Albums, nearly all of Edge's sounds on U2 albums, especially the first few albums, much of Tom Petty, some Foo Fighters, much of REM, pretty much everything that Brian May did with Queen or anywhere else, most of Brad Paisley's stuff. In the "non classic but still AC30" class you'd have Keith Richards' piercing solo on the studio version of Sympathy for the Devil.

Whats their sensitivity?

Your usual "blue-type" alnico speaker has a sensitivity around 100dB.

Probably you don't need no speakers at all. IMO, or what is that shit that everyone uses nowdays...DMM, MFRG, HKTR, OPTR?

FWIW
Our AC30CCH runs through a 2x12 with one Weber Blue Dog Ceramic 50 watt, and one Emi Red Fang. The coupling caps are Sozo, the Choke is Merc Mag, and the Out Tranny is Heyboer. Some of the plate resistors were changed, the Power Tranny and filter caps are stock. TAD power tubes, combo of Sovtek and Penta pretubes, the PI is AT7.
Good Luck

Believe it or not a 2x12 or 4x12 closed back cab with G12M greenback reissues sounds unreal.

I've got an old Marshall 4x12 filled with two Scumback M75's & H55's and it sounds unreal! I can't afford the blues yet but have to try them when I can, but I can't imagine it sounding much better!

Ok . . . I managed to get a hold of a Weber Blue Dog and popped out the JBL

Let me tell you this: when people recommend a Blue Speaker (Celestion, Weber, wtc) they mean it-!!
The JBL was nice but this one is serious!!!

It is much more aggressive but still manages a good clean tone. I am surprised at how articulate the speaker is - its efficiency feels much like a JBL but with the added demension of Bite-itude, or should I say it possesses the quality of Clean Bite-itudeness -

I've had Celestion Blues, Weber Blue Dogs (alnico), Vox/Celestion NeoDogs, and Wharfedales in my Voxes. My latest is an AC15CC1 and a Celestion Gold is on its way just for this amp. You CANNOT go wrong with a Celestion Blue or Gold (or Weber Blue Dog) Alnico for these amps. Eminence Red Fang is an acceptable alternative for less money. These are the standards for a reason...

man, i think you gotta go with celestion blues for an AC30. nothing sounds quite like it..... IMO, it's one of the greatest amp/speaker combinations ever.....

I like greenies myself or a mix of one of each. When I provided backline for Sco, he requested English made AC's with Greenbacks specifically.

I run the 15 watters of this combo in my Hayseed 30 and i love it. It's even better when I'm recording and can alternate between micing the blue or the silver to change the tone.

I tried a Celestion Blue and a 50W Pre Rola doped ceramic Blue Dog in my AC15 and thought they both sounded excellent. On a standard 15 or 30, I'd probably just go with ceramic Blue Dogs. Lots of bottom end capability, lots of brightness without sounding harsh, lots of compression.

If you played clean mostly, I might suggest trying a 12L or a 120F, but when you start crunching it up a little bit, the Blues (both Celestions and Webers) really start to shine.
