Good to see you can threaten an official with bodily harm and be the best woman in all of sports.

Amazing.
Was nobody else worthy? I didn't think she had that great of a year. Not to mention just getting slapped with an $85K fine from the WTA with the threat of much more severe penalties if she ever behaves like that again.
Not a great year for role models!

It is ironic that they voted Tiger as Male athlete and now Serena, only because they both had tarnished their images this year. You can't say they aren't deserving except for the behaviors. It does seem a little cynical to vote them in. Probably just a coincident.

Well, heres another perspective....say you were the top selling real estate agent for your agency. Your numbers are better than anyone else in the region. Awards are to be voted on based on your performance.
Then you get caught in an affair, or you blow up at a customer or have a dispute of some sort or get an OWI....does that nullify what you accomplished?

Yeah, I could see it all now
Tiger gets caught cheating on Serena with Christina Aguilera by TMZ paparazzi and when Serena gets a hold of Tiger she beats his ass with a tennis racket.

The woman is magnificent. I could watch her all day long and I don't even like tennis. Look at her accomplshments in the past decade--the 11 singles and who knows how many doubles majors, the number of new viewers she brought to an otherwise fairly moribund sport, the way she moves and just flat-out wrecks a tennis ball. Her sex appeal. In this way alone, she deserves comparison to Tiger, who single-handedly woke up his otherwise moribund sport. And these people are misfits? I wanna be a misfit when I grow up.
The comments about her tantrum are--um--quaint, I guess. Surely not her best moment, and she seems to agree, but I don't remember anyone being much offended when Conners and Mac did it every week. If you want to talk about special treatment, maybe that's a good place to start. When she wasn't pitching a fit, she won two singles majors and three in doubles with her sister.
I thought I had heard she also got athlete of the decade, but maybe that's not decided yet. If not her, then who? Go get 'em girl.

I think Tamika Catchings should have won, but Athlete of the year isn't about ability. It's about money and who can make the most money for the corporate sponsors. Catchings came off a potentially career ending injury a year ago and came back strong to bring her team to the WNBA finals.

Maybe she owns a Dumble and they had to give it to her because the dumble made them??
I think Dale Jr or Kyle Busch should be female athlete of the year!

Well, they commented loudly and often about officials' alleged physical shortcomings, ancestry, and other enlightened topics, so I'm sure the rhetoric spilled over into the outright confrontational too. In none of the cases do I recall anyone sustaining life-threatening injuries. Still, I for one hope she doesn't do it again. Getting out of control is never very appealing.

But you're not positive. You're just assuming it would go there.

A few things about Tiger vs. Serena. Tiger was not voted as Sportsman of the year, that went to NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson. Also, what Tiger did was not on the field and has nothing to do with how he performed as a golfer. Serena was on the court, 8 feet away from the judge with a racket in her hand threatening to shove a ball down her throat.
I think Serena winning sportswoman of the year really shows how far off the radar women's sports has become. UConn's women's basketball team went UNDEFEATED for the year! Kim Clijsters came out of retirement (and she beat Serena that match). Simona de Silvestro won 4 races in the Atlantic Championship this year. Most of this was off the mainstream radar though.
As for Connor and McEnroe, they never won Sportsman of the Year.

My thought was Diana Taurasi. After all, she was the regular season MVP, the playoff MVP and her team won the title. But then she had her own off-the-court problems this year so the folks here probably wouldn't approve of her either.

Been a long time and I don't pay that much attention to the rhetoric spouted in temper tantrums. I think I threatened to kill a relative or two who pissed me off back before I grew up all wise and mature. Still haven't done it though. Or been arrested for saying it.
Connors has been arrested though (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,456459,00.html) and he's in the International Hall of Fame. He's still a champion.
And she's still magnificent. Guess we all have our moments when we could have done better.

Are you talikeng about Serena Williams the tennis player? Magnificent? One of the worst humans on the planet. Granted, she's a great tennis player...probably because she might be a man, but as a person...ugh.
